The Penn Yan looks great on the water, man I'd love a flybridge rig for cruising the Great Lakes. The admiral does appear to be happy at the helm:D

Can't wait to see what you guys are doing with the interior.:)

Re: 1974 Penn Yan 23 Sportfish Restoration

We did alot of work on the V-berth and cabin sole. In the cabin, woven roving was covered with a cloth from the carpeted sole up to the wood. We faired and painted that area. Tore up the carpet and removed the sole...surprising we found everything to be in good working order. Non-skid the sole and installed it. Same with the berth....which is now a head and storage for fishing equipment. Lots more work to be done.....but.....we are puttting her back in the water for a few days and enjoy her, going to run the rivers, do some fishing, visit some of my old favorite watering holes, and camp on her for a night. We have spent many nights on a 35 and 65 sportfish, but this will be a change. The Admiral is used to the finer things in life, I like roughing it. We'll see if she can handle it without her hair drier, A/C, and hot shower.

Looks good, nice job. What's the clearance in the lower helm as far as height goes?

I'm just curious if I would have to duck to step in being 6'5" :)

Camping on the boat sounds fun, I want a cuddy for the same reason.

Caught any fish on her yet? I didn't see any blood on the deck.

Great restoration of a classic old boat! Any comments on the tunnel drive?

Hi Willyclay....I don't really have much to compare it to, being single screw. She backs down straight, no matter how the wheel is turned. I kinda like that. I backed down a narrow canal with no problem. Kept the wheel turned tight to the wind and when she needed straightened out... I just slip her in fwd. Tight turning radius she has. The lady likes the rooster tail she puts out.

Do you have any thoughts about the tunnel yourself?

Duck? You may have to craw. :) I'm 5'9" and have hit my head a few times on the companionway overhead. 6' overhead at the helm.

No fish to brag about yet. Small snook, redfish, flounder and trout. We are going to get serious now....Good day to ya....Huron Angler

PS: in my travels I have stopped in Port Huron at the municipal dock many times. There was a brewery nearby. What a great way to end the day!....hhhmmmmm.

Perfect boat for over-nighting. The longest we have spent on ours was three nights. Thats about my limit. After that I am ready to get home. Then you can do it again next weekend. There is nothing like the water at night, especially when you know you dont have to go home. I like it!

Hey Sasto,

If/When you get a chance I would really like some details/pics of your Keel repair. Just curious what all you did.

Reel nice boat.

I've considered the PennYan with tunnel. I heard they are no good at turning while in reverse, but it dosen't seem to be that much trouble to straighten out. There is one in my marina, nice boats.

hey Woodonglass. We ended up removing most of the wood that made up the keel...a false one. The layup schedule was found to be of gelcoat, mat, woven, wood, woven, wood, woven, gelcoat.

I repaired her from the exterior, only....removed the wood in the "false" keel to the second laminate...epoxyed in a new piece using multiple overlapping layers of 1808. Bottom paint.... and figure to go for awhile longer ????? with some comfort.....Thanks for asking!

Turn the helm hard over in the direction you want to rotate. Bump the shifter forward as she lumbers in reverse. This will wash the rudder and cause her to turn. Its a slow process but it works. It works better if you are sitting still. I have a single screw also. One benefit of not having a tunnel is that you can use prop walk to turn also.

Never owned one but always interested in technological improvements to traditional applications. Other members have posted comments about propeller issues, however your operating description sounds very good. FYI, pennyanboats.com may be a source of parts, documentation, etc. for future maintenance. Gotta keep the Admiral happy!

Thanks Willyclay......After backing into slip this morning in 15kt winds, I was suprised at how well she manuvers. It is almost the opposite of the twin screws I run, but does her job well.

I became a member of pennyanboats.com.

Keeping the Admiral happy? She loves her first boat. My pirate girl.

I think thes restore has made a turn into just keeping her running. The Lady wants her restored, I don't see the need. Here are a few things done so far.

After some cleaning I painted the motor just to protect it while using her

The batteries were an accident waiting to happen. Before and after. Not finished with this mess, but will do for now.

Re: 1974 Penn Yan 23 Sportfish Restoration

I added a couple radios, one for safety and one to keep my lady happy. Not to mention a half dozen fire extinguishers. No fuel leaks, but coming from diesel to gas I have a difficult time remembering to turn my blower on. I'm thinking on running my ign. wire thru the blower switch. Anybody ever do this or something simular to remind them about the blower till it becomes a habit?

I did a big upgrade on the companionway lid. I installed a bungy cord instead of a piece of line to keep it secured. I also added a floor mat to the FB bench seat to cover the ripped seam in the upholstery. Some of you guys are gonna' rip me, but I'm ready.
