Hey at least you picked a floor mat that matches the seat color. Nothing wrong with that. Plus you're out cruising around on the water which is still just a dream to me.

You'll be there soon, Mr Luhrs!.......That was Mothers Day which I spent the day in the cockpit sipping a brew while my Lady drove me around.

Re: 1974 Penn Yan 23 Sportfish Restoration

I was just reading an old thread that was closed about this same boat. I'm kinda surprized about the comments and performance figures given. Granted, this boat is no speed demon. She feels like a slug. She makes a great river boat with lots of room for fishing. Baccala runs 18 kts at 3400rpm and wide open at 4500 I got 26kts. Fuel milage isn't very good, but what do you expect from the old plow?

Any comments on my blower isssue? I need a reminder!

You could add a timing relay that wouldn't allow you to start till the blower had run for "x" sec or mins.. If you would like I can get you a part number for one and draw you up a generic diagram.
This company make a very reliable waterproof relay http://www.customrelays.com/Series_2000_Solid_State_On_Delay_Timer_Relay_p/341-2000-0000.htm

Thanks for the response, Hghvoltage. I'll look into the relay and if I have any questions I'll post them. The only problem I see would be if I lost motor power and urgently needed to fire up the engine. I suppose an overide switch would solve that problem.

What do you think about simply running my power thru the blower switch then to the ignition switch? The motor would not start unless the blower was on.

You could do that if you had a double pole double throw switch for the blower.

Done deal! Thanks.

Glad I installed new backing plates and bolts on the cleats. She has been doing this for about 25hrs now. Wind is shifting around now so I may be safe

Hey sasto,

That motor looks great!!! I'm gonna have to do something similar with mine. What kind of paint did you use? Did you spray or brush it on? I'll probably use a brush either way. Still undecided, though.

Wally world has good covered battery boxes for under 10.00... "Hint hint, nudge nudge"

Again, beautiful work, my Friend!!!

I used sprayable engine paint, veritas honus.

She was given to me by another Captain Mike, affectionally calles Pops, whom passed away. The family wanted me to have the boat and keep the memories alive. When I first put her in the water I motored to their dock unexpectedly. So happened to be his birthday, family members present, tears were flowing with a mixture of joy and fate.

This bell will start to ring at times for no apparent reason. We always say "thank you Pops" when we hear it.

The bird's name is Rico. I found him in a dumpster in Puerto Rico. He has always looked after a boat and has traveled half way across the earth. He spent time in the hospital with me too. The cigar box? I wasn't supposed to be where it came from. ;)

Battery boxes? I have them. Should be a priority......along with the duct tape you see on one of the exhaust hoses. Maybe this weekend if I can get the lady off of her.

The history of that beautiful boat is priceless!!! The bell is beautiful, and so is the thanks you offer "Pops" when "He rings it". You honor him and his family, sasto. Seems his boat couldn't have found a better home or friend. Rico and the cigar box belong right where they are!!!

Sasto, getting to know you is fantastic... Can't wait to meet you...:D

I had no clue, veritas honus. They live on a narrow canal in the neighborhood during the winter. The canal is just barely wide enough for me to turn her around in. Being new with this single screw boat I was hesitent. Something pulled me there.

I'm the 3rd owner. The first owner lived just up the road from me, Pops lived in NJ. She is back here to be able to live out her life with year around boating. Many oldtimers come here to retire and enjoy their last years, so didn't Baccala. :)

I love the boat. I love her name... And more than anything, I really love the history you have with her.

By boat is 20'3". I would really love to find an appropriately sized brass bell for her; the older, the better. Know of one I could buy?

Baccala is a stinky salt cod fish. I have quickly found the name frequently used by Italians as slang for pu**y. That was the name given to her by the origional owner and I am proud to keep it.

With all the connections I have around here I'm sure I can come up with one for you from one of the boatyards. I'll ask around and see what I can find. Nothing is for sale.

I was born in "an extremely Italian neighborhood". I'm very familiar with baccala. Didn't think you'd even think about changing the name.

Well that sounds fantastic!!! Thank you, sasto!!!:)

Nope...never did! Seems to be a spirit about her and an attitude The name and some of the "roughness" I want to keep.

One thing I have seen posted here on iboats and I know better. Water pump impellers. They are fairly inexpensive. I've had this boat for about 10 months. Changed the fluids, filters, some hoses, the belts, a tune up, reconditioned the prop, cutlass bearings, gland packing, new bilge pumps, new blower....the list goes on. I failed to replace the raw water pump impeller. Guess what!

A long par 3 (250 yards) from the dock we were fishing for bait. Overheat problem. Next day I dive and clean the bottom along with the intake strainer. What do I find the problem to be? A chewed up raw water impeller! Rubber pieces in my heat exchanger.

All is well now....but.....I should have replaced that thing when we first got the boat.

Another lesson learned.....maybe I'll learn something again soon.

Next up? Putting her on a lift for a few months so I don't have to worry about her this summer. I'm going to install a teak swimplatform I got from a friend. The cockpit deck needs some work. This is what the deck looked like when I went to pick her up.

Looks like somebody used latex paint on the deck. I was able to strip it fairly easy. For now I added some carpet because the brown deck is hot on barefeet. Going to Awl Grip it sometime this summer......Yup that is fish blood around the speaker. :)

Hey Sasto, you don't happen to have any pictures taken during your hull repair, do you? I have a similar PY that I'm hoping to someday restore which has the EXACT same hull damage that yours had. I've been wondering how to best do the repair, and any photos you have would be helpful.

I've been wondering how to keep the glass tight against the hull while the resin kicks. A vacuum bag setup would be ideal I suppose, but I don't have access to that type of equipment and have only a vague knowledge of how it would be done anyway. My thought was to apply the resin and glass, then lower the hull (via a which or something) onto a flexable bladder of some kind, such as a thick inner tube, filled with air. The bladder would then mold to the hull and hold the glass tight while the resin cures. Am I over thinking things?

Sasto, About your blower. I am told there are blowers intended to run constantly in engine rooms that need forced ventilation. However the common bilge blowers you find (inline and otherwise) at west marine and boaters world wont hold up very long under constant use. So buy a quality constant run type blower. OR put a big badge on your dash that says REMEMBER TO RUN YOUR BLOWER BEFORE STARTING ENGINE BONEHEAD The bonehead part is their so your Admiral wont have to say it when you forget.

Have a good one
