This is an outboard with electric start on a pontoon boat. There is no spark at either plug. There is fire going into the power pack. I can't find fire coming out of it. The motor turns over fine (starter engages the fly wheel). Because of this motor's age, I went through the taped up wires and found a couple bare spots. That has been fixed, though I don't think wires were crossing because of how far the exposed wires were. I've been using a meter instead of a regular test light. What do I do next?

Thanks in advance.

Feel free to email.
moondok@hotmail.com

I'd have my powerpack tested if I'm sure that it is getting juice.

That is what I am doing now. My regular mechanic is out of town due to family illness and may not be back for some time. A friend who hopefully knows what he is doing has taken over. Is there anything else that could cause this problem besides the coils? Can something inside the motor cause this? The reason I ask such a dumb question is because there was no warning. If it had thrown a rod or something had seized up, I would know it.

Just to reiterate, it turns over fine, the plugs are damp with fuel after trying to start it, there is no spark at the plugs.

At this point I'm just trying to get some more ideas. I'll post about the power pack as soon as I hear something.

Thank you. Some of that info is helpful. I have a couple ideas that deserve attention.

Since I couldn't get much help around here, I bought a manual for this motor. After running the test for the power pack, I determined either the ignition coils or the power pack itself is out. Since the coils are inexpensive, and it's more likely the power pack is the actual cause, I'm replacing all 3 parts. Unfortunately, the coils must come direct from the factory, so I'm stuck in the waiting game again.

FYI, the test I ran involved removing the coil wires from the power pack, putting one probe in one of those holes and one probe to a ground, and having someone turn the motor over. With a test light, the light itself was dim and weak. With my voltimeter that has a needle (not digital), the needle sortof wiggled a bit at the 10 volt setting on the voltimeter. I switched it to 2.5 volts and got a slight rise out of the needle.

The manual says that means the power pack is bad. Oh, the other reason I wanted to replace the coils without being completely sure they were bad is because one of them has cracks in the outer plastic. While that probably means nothing, I rather be on the safe side. And, I get tired of jerking this behemoth out of the water with no outboard. It can be a challenge.

If your coils had cracks in the plastic I'm betting that you found your problem. When they get cracked then your spark arcs to the nearest ground.

I never saw an arc from the coils, but I wasn't ever getting more than a couple volts through the coils in the first place. I'll just be happy to get the parts in and installed. Fishing season is ticking away.

I had to order them from iboats. The closest marina is close to 2 hours away. A couple of boat dealers are about an hour away, but they want a small fortune for anything and everything. Small towns are a bit more quiet but very secluded.

Well, I got the parts in today and installed them. Still no spark. Looks like the flywheel comes off next.
