Re: 1975 50hp Evinrude Won't Start
Thank you. Some of that info is helpful. I have a couple ideas that deserve attention.

Since I couldn't get much help around here, I bought a manual for this motor. After running the test for the power pack, I determined either the ignition coils or the power pack itself is out. Since the coils are inexpensive, and it's more likely the power pack is the actual cause, I'm replacing all 3 parts. Unfortunately, the coils must come direct from the factory, so I'm stuck in the waiting game again.

FYI, the test I ran involved removing the coil wires from the power pack, putting one probe in one of those holes and one probe to a ground, and having someone turn the motor over. With a test light, the light itself was dim and weak. With my voltimeter that has a needle (not digital), the needle sortof wiggled a bit at the 10 volt setting on the voltimeter. I switched it to 2.5 volts and got a slight rise out of the needle.

The manual says that means the power pack is bad. Oh, the other reason I wanted to replace the coils without being completely sure they were bad is because one of them has cracks in the outer plastic. While that probably means nothing, I rather be on the safe side. And, I get tired of jerking this behemoth out of the water with no outboard. It can be a challenge.
