This is the one you got for $300 down in Eatonton, right? Seems like you did OK. :D What lake are you using for the launch?

I think I know why the seats were bent up and the splashwell is all gooped with silicone. Something is missing as in seat support and all the weight was on the splashwell causing it to pull away from the transom. So it appears to me.

GA,
Yep that is the same one. I will be using Lanier launching from the one behind the Dam Store. there is a bracket on the sides that is mounted to the false gunwale bulkhead and one on the splash well also for supporting the seat. When you look at the STBD side top section you can see where it looks like someone had the cap off before and did not or could not get the cap back to where it was supposed to go. the rivets on the top are not even installed and there is about a 1/2" separation from where the holes should like up. Will know more when i get to removing the cap and fixing things.

Gotcha on the splashwell/seats, RR. Lanier is down what?, about 8.5 ft. Allatoona is down 7+. We need rain, but I hate the way the lakes are drawn down starting early in the Fall. Oh well, have fun out there in that almost free SC - LOL

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- project

well, the water test did not fair so well, actually it did get a little wet but that was it.

ran into some interesting issues. Started it up at the house to make sure before i went out to the launch. Get on the boat ramp, start her up and turned the key off just as quick not thinking. after that she would not start. turned over like no ones business but would not fire off at all. pulled the plug wire and used a screw driver to check for spark again and it was good. the battery eventually went dead, and it seemed to do so rather quickly only about 10 minutes with breaks in between included. had my son grab my other battery for the other boat, brand new and freshly charged, hooked it up and she fired off first try. go figure the battery was the issue.

Now with that fixed the RPMs that should be low at idle jump up and the engine is at full throttle while in neutral and in forward gear ?????? check all the connections and adjustments for the throttle cable and shift cable. jacked around with those and the control box for about another hour and just could not get it right. once i had the idle set right it would not go into gear, get the shifting right and the throttle was messed up???? So after about 2 hours sitting with the boat half in and half out of the water trying to get all this corrected daylight was fleeting so off to the house and no water test.

As i am driving home it hits me, boy do i feel stupid, but like i said before i am as dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to outboards and am learning very quickly. when the PO had it and said all was working and after everything else i found with it previously you would think i would and should know better than to believe anyone else and just go over everything regardless. From now on that will be the case. So back to the issue...... who has figured it out already???

I assumed that the control box and all was hooked up correctly and did not bother to check it all out, so when it hit me driving home, i get to the house and sure enough  pull up on the cold start lever and guess what it is controlling, one hint, not the gas... The PO had the shift and throttle cables on the wrong controls in the box and when i swapped boxes i marked them and installed them the say way i took the out, WRONG. switched them around at the house and tested it on the muffs, much better...... hopefully tonight i can get a quick test in.

The other thing i found was that when i pulled out the plug a whole lot of water came out, i mean a lot, so i guess i have a crack, split, problem with water leaking in. will find that out soon as well.

That's a bummer... but at least you figured out. Hopefully, you can get out there tonight - one of the benefits of living 5 minutes from the launch.

I just want to be sure you are still giving the IMP plenty of love and attention... It is after all "Project No. 1" on your thread.... Don't drift completely over to the dark (tinny) side... :)

I guess the good thing is you got her running. Hope the watered plug is just old, dried out gaskets. If you figure it out soon, we have decent weather through Sunday. Maybe the Starcraft gods don't like you fooling with the glass?

Well not much on this one to report, still waiting to water test her, hopefully on saturday. i got my parents coming in form hawaii at 7am and hopefully my pops and i will be water testing her together. then we are turning to try and get the wood for the seats redone and the seats in so we can fish form it until it is absolutely to cold to for man or beast outside, then the tear down will begin with the cap removal, transom repair, find the leak (might have to do that first) deck and paint

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- project

took it out for her water trial and..... man i miss being on the water....... she jumps out of the hole, planes right up and cruises out. video below...... not very good as i was driving and then pulled out my phone to take it.

I did find the leak. it is in the keel about a foot away from the transom right on the seam. it looks as if someone hit something.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- project

so now i am trying to come up with a new dash as the one the PO installed looks like complete and utter butt carp..... i like the look of Pinit's here

http://forums.iboats.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=117210&d=1318049808

simple and clean but then that's a whole lot of aluminum to find and install for that look or a MUCH better job with wood than is currently there.

any suggestions folks? Could use some help with this one. Trying to get this done this week while i got my pops here.

another question is using Gluvit for the inside for water proofing/sealing, do you think 1 qt will be enough for an 18ft of is a gallon more realistic?

Awesome...glad you got it out on the water. That Frankenrude's got a little giddy-up.
Also, neat that your folks are in from Hawaii - long way to travel, so I know that's cool for you.

I'll defer the more experienced/qualified, metal boat guys on your dash set up, although I agree with simple and clean.

Have a good weekend.

Looks like she's running pretty good. :D. As far as the dash goes, It doesn't look like much is savable from the PO's "new dash". I would pull all the new stuff out and see what is underneath. It looks so cobbled-up right now. PINIT does have a nice dash. I like simple. Not sure about Gluvit coverage.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- project

yeah cobbed up is a VERY VERY nice way of putting it. :) it comes off this week to see what is under it and hopefully there is something still under there. I would not save that dash at all unless it was an exotic wood that was used, but not the case so to the dump it goes.......

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

One question i have is for the windshield where can i get new T-bolts for securing to the hull? the manufacturer is Taylor Made.

onto more pics and progress.......
the floor was secured using drywall screws. those have to be cut out and ground down as they just rusted in place.

P7281355.jpg

nasty carpet.... heavy and stinky....now out on the ground

P7271337.jpg

Below deck cleaned out.

P7281345.jpg

Any idea where to get replacement cleats like these??

P7281354.jpg

if not then i guess i am going to try my hand at making my own this winter using aluminum and casting them as long as i have some time to make it.

would also like to get some starcraft logos/plates and cast some of them as well if i can perfect the method this winter. maybe i can get someone to lend me theirs and make some for the starmada. some like the one below and there was another one i saw on here but cannot find right now.

Separated the top along the sides from the hull

P7291369.jpg

P7291368.jpg

bow section all loosened up for removal

P7291367.jpg

Stern section loosened up and ready for removal. this also caused the rest of the remaining threads holding the splash well in place on the stbd side to pop out.
