What runs?? I don't see no stinkin runs!!!!

Here are my materials of choice....

P1110176.jpg

The quick and dirty:

Clean with vinegar/water (multiple), clean with mineral spirits (multiple), one pass with the etch, one pass with the primer, two passes with the paint. All back to back.

It's a good system and my results are really great. I can't put any blame on the materials at all. Skill of the painter and due diligence is the issue here.

My run problem really came at the primer to first top coat pass. Because my lighting was less than ideal I had a tough time seeing and keeping that wet edge. I really know better and I'm kicking myself for it, rats.

The second pass (oddly enough) going black over black I could see that wet edge (reflection) way better so I really had no issues there.

I'd post up some photos of my shoddy work but I'm just too embarrassed :dejection:

Yah, I have tried the HVLP guns but for me, they just add variables and extra opportunities that can go bad. Plus there is the whole running out of paint before I'm done spraying and needing to real fast mix up another batch aspect. Or the having too much and dumping what's left. Cleaning up everything at the end is a pain too.

Those Pro cans really do a nice job, great finish actually. The nerds at Rustoleum have already figured out all the proper mixtures and ratios for me. No adjustments to fiddle with or mess up like on a gun. No compressor to shoot water through the system or die half way through a job. Toss the can out for the clean up, so easy.

I counted 11 empty cans of top coat when I was all done. At Home Depot they actually offer Bulk Pricing of just over 4 bux a piece when you buy 12.

Apples to apples it's prolly just a little more expensive than a gallon of Rustoleum + Hardener.

But when I include the compressor, spray gun, air hose, water filter, paint thinner, more opportunities to mess something up/break (gun adjustments and compressor), and the clean up at the end.....

Yah, spray bombs aren't for everybody, but they work for this backyard boat builder hack (so long as my lighting is good:facepalm::rolleyes:) (course bad lighting doesn't work for the HVLP either though)

Personally, I'm a "roll and roll" guy. You should try it sometime.

Bucket o' Rusto, some hardener and a couple of foam roller brushes... No drips or runs, because the process requires you to go back over what you have already done.

That being said, you are still the "zen master spray bomber." Good work.

I haven't tried the Roll n Roll or the Roll n Tip methods. For the life of me I can't seem to get in my head how a roller or brush can give me smooth results:wacko: I know it does, and have seen the videos but I just can't figure it happenen! (especially with all those rivets = drips)

Then I see the runs here and there, ugh.

That's called character, beauty marks, etc, etc...

I used to stress over stuff like than (being a perfectionist) and my wife told me many times,,, no one would ever notice. And she was right, well, most people never noticed. And to those that do, eh, they don't have to ride in that hideous looking boat if they don't want to...

I have a paint run/sag on the swim platform I built and was going to sand it out, was going to, maybe some day........ :D

And here I spent all this time thinking spray cans were unacceptable lol . I have to re read my own thread again because it seems like Jas was the one who talked me into buying those new spray guns ;)

Hey Jas - No one holding on to a rope or toy attached to that will even see the paint!

True there brother!:victorious:

I have an idea on the pro Kicker, maybe if we all get together we can get Mercury to "sponsor" this boat? I mean, if this were youtube there would be enough action for them to cut you a check? Maybe if we get some seriously large Mercury stickers for the side we could convince them to shell out a 9.9?

Yah man, I'd throw on a Merc decal if they gave me a Pro Kicker!:becky:

That's called character, beauty marks, etc, etc...

OK, yah, I can run with that:watermelon:

Ah sheesh, nah, prolly a skilled painter like WOG did that.

Well, I will say that the spray gun is pretty awesome when I can get it dialed in, compressor is working correctly, no water shooting out of it....

The other half of the time I have too much air, not enough air, too much paint, not enough paint, too much pressure, not enough pressure......

:facepalm::rolleyes:

I just like the gun paint or the roll n' roll due to the hardener which the rattle can does not have. I'm glad to hear the other Rattle can Paint jobs are holding up well so we'll see how this one does too!!!!

I had no idea you rattled her, Jas. As long as the prep was good, it should last.

I think EZ blamed prep for his rattle job. Where is he?

You're confusing my sh!t paintjobs. I rattled my Jupiter. It held up great. However the finish was really dull cuz of overspray. Me and spray paint really don't get along. Jason used those high flow cans which put our paint better than the standard ones I used. My rolled Easypoxy paint job failed due to not priming and due to Easypoxy being garbage.

When's the do-over? Or some love on the motor? Or your next boat resto? You're over due!

Well not to hijack Jas' thread but things are in the works. It's been a BIG end of season for my family and going to be an amazing '14. I just bought a 30' camper and put it on a seasonal site at Lake Raystown. We're going out there for a quick overnighter tomorrow in fact. Anyway, I've been pretty busy with that, getting it cleaned up and making some minor mods to it that I wouldn't be able to do as easily once it was on its site (I don't own a suitable tow vehicle for that size camper and have no intention of buying one). Once the season is over the end of next month, at minimum I plan to redo my weak bow deck, paint the motor, and install my swim platform.

Well not to hijack Jas' thread but,

Seriously you did not say that here in this water cooler thread....

Congrats on the RV! You'll be busy with the little ones...

Hey Jasman, the paint job looking good! The color selection is great and she certainly will stand out on the big water. My paint man was over last week and brought a bigger compressor over in prep of painting the Chief. I am anxious to get come color on her but still have a little bit more sanding to accomplish.

Still a great looking job and looking forward to you next task.
