Hey,folks...got a '76 35hp Johnson {35 RL 76 S} conversion to elec.start & forward controls.<br /> During a trip it became very hard to select/de-select either gear.No crunching of cogs,no grinding...just real hard to get in,or out of gear. When I got it home,I greased the nipple at the select lever on the motor, and it moved freely and smoothly.<br /> On the water,it changed gears as smoothly as ever...BUT..it started slipping out of forward gear.<br /> I have experienced a worn clutch dog and the CLUNK/JERK that comes with this a year or so ago,but this is nothing like that.<br /> It ever so smoothly eases out of gear.No clunk, shudder, lurch, etc. It's as though someone gently slid the lever back to neutral without me seeing them do it.<br /> I am yet to take it on a test with a buddy to disconnect the cable and operate it manually from the select lever on the motor.<br /> Could it be a cable adjustment ?...I have not played around with the cable recently. I had put on a stainless prop, but changed back to my original alloy prop just before it mucked up.<br /> I don't think it's spun, because the lever is actually moving back when it slips into neutral.<br />I will do some exploration on the cable this weekend, but if it is the dog,how hard is it to change ?<br /> My best mechanical efforts so far include:carby kit, head gasket, and points and condensers.<br />I do not have some of the specific tools the manual suggests{truarc pliers, special sleeve tool 321519}.Are these a must,or can you work without them ?<br /> Thankyou for your help.

disconnect your cable, put engine in forward, now shift remote to forward. how do the connection match up. if cable is not pulling lever far enough forward, adjust. now with the cable disconnected put in reverse, put remote in reverse and see it the connection match. there are usually two adjusting points on those manual cables. the black connector will turn on the cable end, and the adjuster that mounts to the block.

Hi again rosco 11, how' ya doing ? I sent you a thought now and then, hoping everything was fine. Good idea to test it without the cables on. My eldest son was down in Melbourne for almost a month in december at the Australian Syncrotrone Project, which his Danish company is supplier at. Made me remember you.

Just to add to that. I have a 1961 (rds-22) 40 h.p. johnson and have also experienced that so-called "slipping" out of gear. I was extremely worried until I disconnected the cables on the lake and manually put it into gear. It ran beautifully, and never slipped out. I got back to shore and readjusted the cables and never had the problem happen again. So good luck to you and hope everything works out well.

Well it's good to see the iboats family is still happening !<br /> Tashasdaddy, thanks for your input .I will put your advice to use.Once I have the cable set up perfectly, how often should I pull it all undone and do maintenance ? And what would this maintenance be ?<br /> Dane..great to hear from you !..I was hoping to catch you,but didn't expect to on the 1st day of posting.Stay tuned for another triumph with this good old donk.<br /> Saskatoon, the best advice usually starts with..."the exact same thing happened to me...". I hope my problem is solved as easily as yours was. Thanks for the input.<br /> I will post the results of the test drive. thanks again...

i would check it yearly at least, as compression, lowerunit oil, fuel screen, hoses, wiring. all this will let you know if something is a miss before it's broke. personally i usually pop the cover every time i come back in. i have a '55 15hp rude and a 73 50hp rude, '98 4.3 mercruiser.

Re: 1976 35hp Johnson

Well, the problem is fixed. Saskatoon,Dane and Fireman 57 take a bow.It was a simple cable adjustment. You guys nailed it.<br /> Looks like the dealer will have to wait just a little longer for my $$$$.<br /> Tashasdaddy, while I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my posting, please don't go arrogantly assuming I don't know what engine maintenance is all about. This motor is 30 years old,and now runs like a treat, thanks to my maintenance.<br /> There is no need to tell me things twice, and if it's going to take you 11 hrs to think up a smart comment.....next time make it a little funnier than "its call maintenance...about <br />29 yrs too late"<br /> The knowledge I have in outboard motors I got from the gentlemen in this forum who take the time to help others. They do not give smartbum replies, and I have never seen them talk in a condescending tone when they offer their help.<br /> Look at the clear and polite question I posted.Look at the polite and helpful answers I got...then,on the other hand, were your replies.<br /> It doesn't cost anything to be a little more civil.<br /> But thanks anyway.

Re: 1976 35hp Johnson

Congratulations Rosco. Glad you got it running again. Those gearboxes rarely gives problems, its more often the models from 74 and earlier. Wish I was there to go fish'n and share a sixpack. Bet we could have a good time. My son was in a nature park and took a bunch of pictures. Looks like a great place. He had kangaroo steaks too on barbeque.

Bet you are all wondering how I got credit. Been enjoying stories and laughing with rosco since the first time he posted. I told him to check the cable first in a private email. GDane it is good to hear from you and glad you remember our mate from Down Under. You were in on the epic thread that introduced him to us. I always stop and read your replies along with "gentleman" Joe Reeves, OBJ, rodbolt, dhadley (who has helped me out on several occasions off-line), and a few others that I'm surely forgetting. Glad you guys are still around. Oh, and hi JB. If you want to pad your posts to reach your goal you can say hi back!
