Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

Okay, Okay, as I stated before, I have used the roller on flat areas, BUT can ya'll say that you have sanded the stringer areas so smooth and got your fillets so perfectly flat that the roller gets all the air bubbles outs? The roller is perfectly flat, that being said, how can it roll over the not so perfectly flat little areas and actually push the bubbles out. The nap roller gets in those little shallow dips. Ya know what I'm trying to say here? Yeah, yeah, What I'm saying is that I didn't get everything PERFECTLY smooth.:p I mean its SMOOTH where the cloth will curve to any dip or what have ya, just not straight across. It's straight across actually.....just minus the little tiny dips.:D

I stated "have you ever got'n it perfectly straight?"..........I just may have ask the wrong people that!:D Decker....Wood....

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

I had to work pretty late today because a truck driver felt he needed to make a few pit stops before he showed up this evening. Good thing it was going to be a warmer night than what we've been have'n lately, I got to do alittle glassing.:) We have a cold front coming through Friday so I might get to squeeze in another day or hours for glassing.

I Have glassed 6 feet from the trans so far. All I need to do is wrap a couple of layers of CSM over the top of the stringers. Then its on to the next 5 or 6 feet.

Had to pick up more cups today after work. I might have to pick up some for these guys.

The cups are not ONLY good for mixing resin but also transporting dirt and help gather pecans.

Sorry Jitterbug. Didn't mean any harm. I think your doing a great job. Man I use whatever works for me. Nylon rollers, chip brushes,
resin roller, my fingers and anything else.
Nice pic of the kids having fun. I wish life could always be that simple.
Like I said before, your glass work looks like a pro did it.

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

Hey Fellas.
Just when I thought my rebuild was done for the year, well it is for the hull (maybe), Its not done. The bad new is my father-in-law's Searay has a cracked block and so does the spare block. We are insearch of a new block for a complete rebuild for that. If you happen to find one, haller at me. Its a mercury 140 4cyl. 84 model.

We made a deal in the mean time. I buy him a cover for his boat so we can get it out of the garage for the winter and I get to use his garage. Since the cap is already on my trailer, I can easily hook up and haul it there. ( Just a few small blocks away.) If it needs to be pulled out of the garage, hook her up and pull her out. No biggie. If it were the hull, being that its on the cradle, not only would it be a major pain in the butt to get it on the flat bed trailer but I didn't want to fracture the structure. There is no way to get the cradle on a trailer without twisting and warping something, maybe causing the PB to seperate from the stringer in the area that wasn't glassed yet.

This will be the part I really will enjoy. I get to dream up my my own thing for the console and seats, livewell, and what ever. Beleave me, I have thought about this layout for a year. Game time now.

I'm going to cut out the livewell thats inbetween the seats and put in the modern type seats that come with the little buddy seat in the middle. I estimate $500 for that and well worth it.

The deck wood is horrible. I will be replacing that wood with the same ply wood used for the transom. As a matter of fact all the wood that needs to be replaced will be that.

20121110_105435.jpg

I'm thinking of cutting the upper layer of glass off to repace what needs to be replaced. The reason: It pretty much has a "mold" I can use. The top is just FLAT. The bottom, well, it has support beam type thingies and such. I can PB and clamp everything in.

The console will be completely redone. Remember this:

I have plans for this area also but I'll speak on it later.

I'm doing some cut'n and grind'n before I haul the cap to my F.I.L.'s. There is no sense in dusting up his garage if I can keep from it. Less cleaning for me later anyhow.
The livewell is removed. Few cuts and KICKS and its outta there.

I have some thin 3x3 sheets of plywood from work. I plan to temporarily screw pieces of the ply to the inside of the area where the livewell used to be.

This way I'll be able to lay the glass in the area. I have some ideas on how to make my curves and round over the edges but I would like some ideas from ya'll. I pretty sure ya'll can come up with something better before I take these steps. I am thinking of useing PB to make my curves. Thanks ya'll.

You are getting to the point I can't wait to get on mine...making up a new top layout...I agree, that's actually gonna be fun!
Enjoy yourself dreaming up a new set-up and you can bet I'll be watching for some ideas for my own..;):D

This is what I mean when useing the thin plywood sheets to glass the livewell area. The pieces of panels are simulating the ply.

20121110_155541.jpg

I want to make this boat structurally sound so that I can add a ski pylon to it. The way the pylons are made, you can fit them into the hole where the seat base is. To beef up the rear deck, I plan to cut this raised lip off. JUST the raise lip. This way it will be flat and there will be a lip sticking out so it can provide support for a sheet of ply.

20121110_155608.jpg

20121110_155051.jpg

Wrap a piece of 3/4 plywood in a layer of 1.5. Lay the ply in the area to be covered. Glass it in with 2 layers of 1.5 and 1708 on top of that. I'll run the glass up the sides.

Tell me what ya think. Bad, good, if you think I'm an idiot, that OK too. If you have something to add or a better idea, please let me know.

You can use just about any material that will hold its shape as a support for making new sections, plywood, heavy cardboard, etc... just be sure to use a separator film made of wax paper, aluminum foil, or something like that, and as an added precaution, coat them with some vaseline to keep them from sticking, unless of course that's what you want...If you want to add strength later on, you could glass in whatever thickness of ply you need.

Hmmmm, a ski pylon...

GT, about the wax paper, I was thinking the same thing. Thanks man.
Pylon.....oh yeah. You KNOW you need one.:D

Sounds like you have it going your way.

Its going OK. I hate it that my FIL's block has a crack it. He was just wanting to run it a couple of times before it got too cold and use it for the summer. Then rebuild and customize. I have awsome plans for it and he's digg'n my ideas. I was really wanting a tinny after this but that boat has a very open floor. Cann't resist it.

Decker, that hull of yours is looking great.

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

The cap looks alot better in todays pics. :)
The gel coat is tuff stuff. I bought mine from US Composites. That was the cheapest place I could find.
Takes alot of sanding and polishing to do gel coat. I think it's worth it.
Sorry to hear about the FIL's cracked block. That's alot of work also.
Keep up the good work.

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

This is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth, which Ain't much!!!! Never done it, so only speaking from what I've read and learned in by iBoats experience. Gelcoating a top cap like yours, with all of it's sharp angles and intersections, would become a daunting task when it came time to sand, buff and polish. Like Decker says, Gelcoat requires a LOT of sanding buffing and polishing and getting into all them small corners and fairing them out WOULD be a problem. Again, JMHO!!!

Wood, your opinions are worth alot man. Aswell as other Iboaters too.
I guess I should just ask plain and simple, What should I do about paint?
I like the roll and tip thing. Should be easy and my personal thoughts about it is that I'll be able to lay it on nice and thick. I do not want the paint to start cracking 2 or 3 years down the road. I would rather fix paint that has been wore off I think.
I have access to have it sprayed.
Which ever would be best.
I will have the boat in the water for atleast 4 days a couple of times during the year.
I'm concerned about the UV rays.
I would like to do the job pretty cheap but still have a job well done.
I wouldn't mind the rusto job, Wood, but how is it with UV rays and on the water for 4 days.
If it should be fine, I'm cool with it and will do it. $100 paint job is music to my ears.
What ever advise ya'll can give or even a link, would be great.

Have a good one.

CHEAP! Bad choice of words I had there. I smacked myself in the mouth like my momma used to.

Hellooo JB, I gotta say that is very high on my list of options. $100 bucks just sounds too good to be true( but it did come from Wood.)

I've been reading few threads and have done some of my own research mainly on primer. Correct me if I'm wrong
My boat was painted auto paint over the original gel coat.
I need to sand ALL the autopaint OFF. I say all because who knows if IT was done right.
Prime the cap with BASIC primer.
Any imperfections should show.
Fill the imperfections with marine Tex.

Thanks
