After some help from the forum I finally got my 115 going and running great. I should have listened to my own good sense as well as the advice contained here and rebuilt the waterpump.

It shut down on me hard and when I took the head covers off as part of the diagnosis, the rings in two of the cylinders had shattered. There is some scarring in the cylinders. It looks scary.

Is this worth rebuilding? It was strong when running good. Can the sleeves be replaced in the cylinders? What are the options and possible costs? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And by the way, if there is any doubt whatsoever about the waterpump, REPLACE IT!

Yes, you can sleeve it.

Check the rebuilt powerheads right here on iboats.

the cylinders, can be bored out as needed up to.030...i dont believe your eng has tilt-n-trim......so,i think,if i was going to rebuild one,i would find a newer one..78,i believe ,1st yr for tnt....you can find a nice 80's eng prob for the cost of your rebuild..or find one that has tnt,and rebuild it...I would suggest a marine mech rebuild it,or if u are very mech inclined,u could do it ,w/a few spec tools.

Alas you found out the hard way why every powerhead estimate I write includes a new water pump without exception. If the customer chooses the decline the pump, I either decline the job, or expressly disavow any guarantee whatsoever.

I just got a 73 115hp rebuild from iboats and have installed it. Do need to install a new one even though I replaced the impellar 5 months ago?

The newly installed water pump was working fine when my motor blew. I had bought the boat about 7 months ago, and the previous owner was using either to solve a cold start problem. I think that this is what led to the engine's demise.
