I also forgot to mention that the water tube broke at the bend near the powerhead when I removed the lower unit. Any suggestions on how to remove whats left? Will I need to disassemble the column to get at it?

Sorry to keep pestering you, but I noticed that the bearing on the main shaft #44 on exploded parts diagram on sears parts direct for 217.58761 is not listed at all. I wanted to replace that bearing as it came apart upon removal. I was able to get it back together but would like to replace if a substitute is available. Can you help?

I know exactly what your saying...is the outer race still in the housing? if so you have to get that out too and your right they don't list that bearing on the parts diagram but rest assured its nothing special, you will either find the bearing numbers on the bearing or take measurements and match it up with what ever fits...
as far as the water tube you will need to pull the powerhead and either make one from copper or call the Eska junk yard, I have one thats broken at the threads but us usable.. you can have it but my goodness the shipping would kill yeah and you would still have a broken water tube....so I recommend copper and bend to fit....I think I used a common plumming grommet to patch one of those in at the inlet plate, there is thin aluminum bolt and rubber washer up there, below is a shoulder crimped in the tube.....this was a poor design and 2 out of three will be broken if not from disassembly then from vibration and fatigue.

I scored an intact water tube in excellent condition from ebay. It has the crimp at the water pump end. looks to be in great shape. I may make a twin from copper tubing as a spare before installing. I know I am somewhat of a novice and apologize, but anything to look out for pulling the power head? Will I need new gaskets?

as for the bearing I just grabbed the name and googled it and here is just my first search result...now remember this...I just got out a bed, half blind and stll. stumbling around lookiin for the coffee so, 7201 Nachi Angular Contact Bearing 12x32x10 Steel Cage C3 Japan Ball Bearings

Ok got my coffee and a quick check of that bearing and I realize you need to measure what you have there and make sure of the exact size OD and ID.....I'm still looking at the situation....the same bearing number witha few letters behind it can upwards 100$, edit: Polyamide resin cage 15 degree angle....and the proce goes through the roof :facepalm:, you need the 40 degree angle steel cage 10$ bearing, the link and the ebay seller are one in the same so check shipping between them and take the best deal...afetr you verify the sizeing...I would venture to guess the 10$ bearing is it....hey and I learned something here because I have never needed to replace one before.

Ok its the cage material and contact angle that makes the price go through the roof, check my ebay search....these Eskas will surley be the $10 bearings...lol

if memory serves you say you bent yout C clip? those are a common clips, always Flat side down....I think I already said that but its worth repeating...

Mr. Crabs,

I am attaching a few pics of the shaft, spacer, and bearing. The bearing came apart upon removal and the little balls went all over. I was then able to get the inner sleeve off the shaft. The inner sleeve to the bearing looks to be part of this long sleeve. If they are two separate parts, it looks like there must be an inner portion of the long sleeve that the bearing sleeve slides over.

I could be wrong too. Fortunatly, I have two sets of everything, so I have a disassembled version next to an assembled version. Please review and provide your feedback.

I did figure it out...the spacer does have a sleeve atop it for the bearing to seat onto. Soaked it in PB penetrating blast for days and was then able to remove with some nudging.

Got the new bearing today and it fit like a glove. Slowly but surely...progress!

well I was going to relpy but you on your way, be sure to clean every thing and to use light oil on re install, once you have it all back together when you spin the crank shaft by hand it wil sound ruff, pull up on the shaft while spinning and it will smooth out, this is why you want up and down movement at the impeller as well @ WOT every thing in the drive line heads north

Mr. Crabs,

I have completed the lower unit except for the modification to the shift rod seal. My question is the removal of the boot. How did you remove the boot? Did you cut it flush or did you pull it out? What about the seal that hold the boot in, is that removable and did you?

Also, when refilling the lower unit with fluid, do you lay it on it's side and pour in the fill hole until it comes out the vent hole?

I noticed in your earlier post that you remove the rubber coated wiper. How do you recommend removing it? It seems to be in there quite well.

What did you use to scuff up mating surfaces?

Sorry ,
you know what...I responded to this at lenght last night then fell asleep in the chair and never got posted itI guess,
pry it out with two tin flat screw drivers or make some picks, = pressure on both side and wiggle it, the boot is part of the wiper and hard to save at all...
