or as my wife refers to it as "the ugly f***in boat"....lol
Currently planning on turning it into an open floorplan fishing boat.
Has an OMC 175 (ford v8 302) and stringer outdrive (engine runs good and the outdrive runs in forward and reverse, but tilt gear is missing and rubber boot is shot)
transom is real solid, and measures a little over 2" thick.
Plan is to put 2 small outboards (40-50hp each) on the back...that would be fast enough for me...again, fishing boat, not speed boat.

have already removed all the interior and cut the deck out. Now have to build in a couple live wells and run new wiring and controls.

will post some more pictures soon

Welcome to iboats.

Converting from an I/O to twin outboards

Consider picking up a used I/O set up with a mercruiser which would retain the balance and work better in the long run. Unless you have a pair of outboards that run great and are ready...... the I/O would also be cheaper.

I will love watching how you do this.

Technically speaking, can this be done?

I know I/O are heavier than outboards, how do you plan on compensating for the less stern OB weight?

Cheers!

DJ I gotta agree with Bob on this one keep an eye out for a Mercruiser 120HP setup they are pretty much a dime a dozen ( especially on project boats ) . I would say if you dont already have the outboards you will be able to get the Merc setup much cheaper. I picked up a complete 1974 Larson opne bow with that setup for $450 on our craigslist.

Re: 1976 viking Deckboat build

from my research i have done on this boat, you could get in in either and i/o setup or ob setup..have pictures of both.
this is probably why the transom is so thick.
the v8 in it runs great...just not sure about the outdrive.
my plan is to still put 2 small (45-50hp each) ob on the back, to help maximize deck space. but if i can come across a good deal on a donor boat with an merc888 (i'm a ford guy) then i will entertain that setup. there haven't been too many for sale around here lately.

DJ I am a ford guy my entire garage is done up in Ford including Ford blue cabinets However I will admit I drive a Chevy Express service van every day as it averages 15-18 MPG and I have yet to find a full sized Ford van that will even come close :D. I do know the Smaller Merc 4 bangers supposedly get pretty good milage . I might be willing to part with my Larson with the 120 HP Merc setup in it all it needs is an engine coupler :D easy fix since you would have the outdrive and engine out to swap them anyways :D. I would probably part with it for 4 pictures of Mr. Franklin if you were interested :D.

Re: 1976 viking Deckboat build

pulled the lower and upper gearcases off today (i'm still covered in grease like i was working on a car engine)

i will have to admit...OMC had some really impressive engineering in that sterndrive...but as we all know..it takes more than a good product to succeed

Gonna try and get the itermediate houseing out this weekend..and pull the motor out, if my engine hoist will reach that high, if not, will dismantle the engine while it's still in the boat.

not gonna start redoing the deck and supports until i finalize how i'm going to power that boat

Have to admit, i am surprised how good of a condition the outdrive is in, and how smoothly the gears mesh and spin. The oil in the gear cases was very clean.
i'll clean them up and throw them on ebay.
didn't get much else done on it over the weekend, went and fished down on the river instead.

Re: 1976 viking Deckboat build

My nephew just picked up an OMC stringer drive boat with the 302...apparently a company called Hannay's marine can get you just about any of the outdrive parts for the OMC's...he replaced a few parts on his and says it runs like there's no tomorrow and is quite happy with it.

The twin engine set up though definitely adds to the cool factor, and the boat definitely needs a shot in the arm in that dept.! :D

Thanks Dj I may just have to have a little barbeque one weekend ( throw some burgers and brats on the grill ) and invite you and Conway over for a little boat thrashing . I am planning to pull the cap on her and redo all the wood and most likely flip the hull over to smooth it out for paint and will most likely need all hands ondeck :D for that adventure . The her thing may stem from the fact they always seem to want our money LOLOL.

DJ I spotted an add on craigslist tonight for someone looking for a pair of 40-60 HP outboards and it made me think of your project ( oddly the poster was in Okalona ;):D.
