Dj I got my deck out and all the aftermarket stringers:mad:. I pickd up the Zinc Chromate and most of the paint and then the rain started LOL. I have been sneaking out between showers and getting all the old and I mean old painters tape off the boat and prepping for paint .

"Aftermarket Stringers" ???

speaking of stringers....anyone ever heard anything positive or negative about using t-rex boards (plastic composite decking boards) as stringers???
wonder how well epoxy and fiberglass would bond to them

Grinding Time!!!

Grinding Time!!!

started doing some grinding on the fiberglass and have removed a couple sections of one of the stringers.

keeping a light misting of water sprayed on the boat while grinding to keep the dust down.

Sounds good Dj lots of fun :D. I am glad I dont have to grind any glass on my current resto although I did order $50.00 worth of rivets today and thats just to fill the holes from the added stringers . Where did you send me your number by the way :D. I checked my insight and my yahoo and PM's here no number yet :D.

I'd stay away from it. It's going to have a better chance of expanding and contracting within the fiberglass cocoon, not to mention it's going to be heavier than the wood that was in there.

Honestly, you'd be better off using a foam core encapsulated in fiberglass.

The purpose of the stringer material depends on what you plan to use the stringer material for. There are 3 possibilities...

If you don't plan on fully encapsulating the stringer in fiberglass, then you will want a stringer material that is going to give you the linear strength.

If you are going to encapsulate the stringer, then the core material doesn't matter if you build up the 'glass where IT is the strength of the stringer. Then the stringer material is only there as a mold for the new stringer.

If you are encapsulating the stringer with glass only to seal it from the elements, then you want a stronger material for the stringer.

well..the old stringers had about 1/4" of glass on them, and i cannot see where they originally used any type of expoxy (or other adhesive) to make the wood stringer actually stuck to the hull.

I'm thinking of the foam route as a core. do you think that rigid pink foam would suffice?

still having a bit of trouble finding a local source for the glass and resin.

going to build some extra supports for the hull to rest on before i remove anymore material. that hull is getting a little to flexible for my taste

Dj give these guys a shout the parts guy there is really nice told me if he doesnt have it he can get it for me in 2 days or less its where I picked up my Gluvit . I tried Just add water out in Valey and they are not nearly as customer service oriented in my oppinion :D. Marine sales and service is over on River road just off of Zorn headed towards downtown.

well...it has happened...wife says this boat has to go...
she wants a boat we can use now instead of later.
so will will be floading craigslist and ebay with alot of parts.

still thinking of keeping the lower half of the hull and making it into a large john boat/bass boat.
(might hide it out behind the shed...lol)

I was just starting to get into it too :)

Maybe you can just hide it on her. My wife wasn't going to go anywhere near mine too but when it's done she'll be lucky if I let her in it :)

Re: 1976 viking Deckboat build

yeah...bayliner is gone...it was a nice boat, but was just too small for my larger family...

boat yard...well, on on way to that, have 4 of them between the two of us.

Still have some TLC that i need to give to the searay soon. I would love to strip and paint the hull sometime soon, got to figure a way to lift her off the trailer so i can get to the entire hull...(can't flip her over like some people do :p)
