I have a 77 Evinrude 25 HP that I saved from being scrapped. I replaced all the cables, hoses plugs, valve and seat, float pin, adjusted float, inpected fuel pump and replaced gaskets, prop etc. I tried to start it and it runs great for 10 to 15 seconds --if it kicks over and then peters out like it ran out of gas. The bowl has fuel in it and she holds a firm prime. I have the mixture screw at one and a quarter turns and have played up and down in quarter turn adjustments to no avail. I am thinking gap plugs ( I put them in right out of box), Possible cracked piston ring?, fuel pump? or cd2 power pack capacitor? any help would be appreciated as I am new to restoring and learning as I go along

Get yourself a spray bottle and put in some 50:1 mix. When it's about to die spray some mix into the carb throat. If it stays running you have a fuel issue. Try and check back.

Re: 1977 25 HP Evinrude elec start

read this, it will need carb cleaning, and new fuel lines. do not use starter spray, use only premixed gas from fuel tank, to put into the carbs. i use a turkey basket to put fuel into the carb throat. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

Lines were replaced, carb cleaned, main jet is pristine, new gaskets, hose clamps, crossover line replaced, inspected reeds when carb off-pristine, cleaned entire motor, all electrical connections cleaned and protected, fuses and pin connector checked, all wires checked for continuity, coils checked with ohm meter

Nice save! They are great running engines, easy to work on and parts are no problem to find.

Have a 1978 on my Lund and a 1981 Johnson in the garage that I'm currantly looking for a lower unit for. Picked up the Johnson really cheap and was going to use it as a parts motor but it runs so smooth that I decided to fix it instead.

Best o luck with your repair and post back your results.

hEY! I REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AND THE FUEL LINES ARE NEW. THE GAS CAN AND ITS LINE ARE NEW AND THE MOTOR HOLDS A FIRM PRIME. i TRIED TO START IT AND IT RUNS FOR A FEW SECONDS AND CUTS OUT? i ALSO NOTICED THAT ONLY EXHAUST IS COMING OUT OF THE TWO HOLES FOR WATER. i ORDERED A CARB KIT AND A WATER PUMP KIT. wHAT GETS ME IS THAT THE CARB HAS PLENTY OF FUEL IN THE BOWL AND WHEN I PULLED THE CARB THERE WAS FUEL THAT WAS PRETTY OILY LAYING IN THERE NEAR THE REEDS. iF i SPRAY FUEL IN THE CARB SHE STARTS BUT CUTS OUT. Does the motor need the backpressure of the waterpump functioning to stay on?

If it cuts out then the carb is most likely the culprit, take it apart ,clean and adjust and put it back on, at least it runs!

And to answer your question the water pump has no bearing on the engine running.

Thanks! and I ordered all the parts from iboats! I was really impressed with the quality of a sierra replacement fuel pump in comparison with what was on the motor when I got it--hope all the parts are like that. I should have the parts in a week and I will post results.

I know a Marine place that has a 35 johnson that is about a 1980. The guy is trustworthy he said he would give me the whole thing for 200 bucks but it needs a powerhead. If you are interested it is white water marine in bellport, ny and mention you spoke with the landscaper who comes in all the time

Thaks for the lead Flyfishin but I think the shipping would be much more than it's worth. The Johnson I have I only gave $125.00 for and all that's wrong with it is the lower unit. But then all the electrical parts in it are worth more than I paid for it which was the original reason I bought it.

Again best o luck on your project and let us know the outcome. I know you'll get'er.

Still no word of a compression test. Unless there are a few more parts' to take apart, or change. Try that.

Yes, if compression is bad, it's a waste of money replacing parts, as it is never going to run right until the compression issue is addressed. Compression is the FIRST thing I check on an old motor before diving into it.

I have it apart now because I am waiting for the carb parts kit from iboats and the water pump kit. If when that is done and she does not start, I will check the compression. If the compression is bad it will still be worth it to me because I am getting great joy out of trying to breathe life in to this previously condemned to the scrap pile outboard. I don't give up and I am a pretty good learner. If I have to I will tear through the entire motor! thanks:mad:

In an outboard work shop, don't take any thing apart, don't replace any parts. The compression test come's first. I dont care if gandpa's motor came out of the original box it came in. Compression first. It seem's grooming a dead horse is the way to go. I replaced every thing and it still won't run. Sound familair?
