the bubbleback is good news because if it was not there, that means your motor would only be a 115 or an 85hp. both good motors, but more power is better, right?

Re: 1975 Evinrude 140

thanks for the info emdsapmgr. I did not get to taking a picture of the top looking for the number. was busy grinding glass all day. hopefully tomorrow.

89retta, if you are talking abou the terminals on the stbd side, that is part of the problem as i do not even have a terminal strip there, nor do i know if it should have one.

i have ordered the service manual and hope to have it this week.
Where did you get the service manual i need one ASAP ? Also Mine is hooked up if you still need photos of the terminals

Re: 1975 Evinrude 140 - in progress again

OK, so now I am looking for some more help here guys.....

I sprayed a little fogging oil in the cylinders, just a little, then while cranking sprayed in just a bit more then continued to crank it for a bit to help lubricate the cylinder walls and blow out any excess with the plugs out. I rechecked the the compression after that and still was only able to get about 90lbs in each of the cylinders.

Next i took the carbs off and cleaned them up and checked them, seems like someone had just done that before me, but they also lost a cover for one of the jets on the carbs

Found a very nice repair guy on sunday who just happened to be in his shop and he has OBs laying all over the place. I was able to get the cover from him, he just gave it to me, and now have a source for used parts and new parts for anything.

anyway, replaced the fuel lines and the tywraps with hose clamps while at it, and cleaned the filter on the port side, also relocated the hose clamp so it was not so close to the starter terminal, all visible in the pic below

cleaned the plugs as they did not look good

after all was cleaned up and put back together primed the carbs hooked up all cables and wiring and turned the key. and wouldn't you know it............. she just cranked and cranked and cranked.......... No start.

Checked for spark, good spark on all 4, could smell gas on the plugs, checked the carbs for gas and they had gas in them.

What do i need to check next or go on to next?

i have the manual and am reading it as well as searching the forum as well but am not having much luck. Any help would be appreciated.
Where did you purchase manual i need one
