The Flywheel and Crankshaft Taper should be Lapped, to insure the Contact Fit between them is 100%
Get a new key
A Torque Wrench is Critical on Tapered Fittings. Even a few too many Pound Feet of Torque will Ruin the Flywheel

The upcoming carb work could be a bit frustrating. We’re here to help, so post your questions. In my opinion owing an old 2 stroke outboard means doing repairs at home. Do you have or have access to an ultrasonic cleaner? They are great for carb work.

I haven't gotten an ultrasonic cleaner yet, but I suspect it is going to be in the plan for the near future.

New key purchased and on the way, but I found out that lapping compound has so many varieties I am unsure what to get. Anyone have any suggestions?

Dress the edges of the keyway with a fine file, and just about any fine abrasive will do to lap it (or you could splash out for some genuine OMC flywheel lapping compound 🙄😂) . I have used kitchen cream scourer before. It wont be a million miles away and most likely will just need a light polish .

Fine valve grinding compound will do it in minutes.----Remember , the key locates the flywheel for proper timing.----The flywheel is driven by the matched locking tapers.
