Hello all,

New to iboats but have been reading info for over a month now and some great info is to be gained. I have this outboard from my uncle who passed and want to put it on my 17'fishing boat. The problem is I want to see how good it runs seeing as it has been awhile since it was last run, but still in great condition. I don't have the throttle cables and will need to find a replacement, if I still can. So here is what I need to know to try and start.

I don't have it on the boat(still at dock with a 85hp chrysler piece of crap outboard) on it. So the wires are not hooked up to any ignition, can I hook the red and black power wires to a battery and then short the coil to get the starter to engage. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 1977 Johnson 25H.P.

sorry I will clear up seeing as I was'nt to clear. The egine was on my uncles pontoon boat. The throttle cables and ignition system where trash so my dad in all his wisdom cut the ignition wires just before they enter the outboard, so the wires are hooked up to everthing inside of outboard just not to a ignition system. I have the battery leads coming from the outboard as well.

Just run a ground wire from your battery to the starter bracket bolt. Connect a wire to the + battery terminal and then touch the solenoid on the starter. When it starts up remove the + cable. Choke it to kill it.

You can always disconnect all the wires relating to the electric start and the battery, use the recoil starter to start it, and use the tiller handle to operate the throttle and steer. Of course, on a pontoon you'll want to get the remote and steering installed at some point, but those motors start pretty easy are are relatively easy to pull start.

At least it will get you going so you can figure out what else, if anything, you may be facing.
