Re: 1977 Starcraft 14' Holiday Restoration has officially begun

I bought an adjustable transom saver several years ago and I think it also said for use with til/trim motors only. It was too long even at the shortest setting so I cut the tube shorter to make it work. It's the type that the lower end fits over a roller. No tilt/trim on the motor but I've been using it ever since with no problem, I just have to tie the lower end tightly to the roller with several winds of rope to keep it from bouncing up and falling off when I hit a bump.

Early on with it, I tried using bungees to hold it to the roller, but that didn't work cuz I hit a bump and the bungee stretched just enough for it to come off and the outboard fell down. I guess using it with tilt/trim is supposed to prevent just that.

I'm done !

I just have to buy some starcraft decals from ebay and pick up my capacity plate from the trophy shop and she will be 100 % done ..

I went to the Mohawk river a half hour ago to splash her but its a small boat and the wind was fierce and water choppy so it will have to wait till tomorrow or this weekend. Thankfully i happen to be on vacation next week. JUST in time !

Some not so good pictures 30 minutes ago .

That's a sweet boat. Very nice! It should fly with that 50 on there. It all looks top notch.

Hey man, I was just riding my bike there 3 hours ago! Noticed it was kind of windy.

Looks fantastic, a great job all around! Good luck with the splash. Hope you'll remember to post pics of that capacity plate when you get it back, and show us your splash too!

Oh yea. I forgot about that. The outboard is getting an entire overhaul in the fall after the season. It will look like 1987 again when im done with it.

Well on the way to fishing yesterday morning i saved a turtles life ... i was driving past a park filled with kids on the early afternoon and i saw this turtle crossing a street away from vegatation towards a neighborhood. I slammed on my breaks and having past it already i had to run out of my truck towards it.
Once i got to it, i got in front of it. It saw me and turned around and headed back towards the small childrens park and some woods. I had to stop several people driving behind me, all of which were happy to see what i was doing. I was for lack of a better term Shoo'ing it back across the street as three carloads of people i stopped were cheering me on and clapping.

But i knew it would probably try to cross the street once i left again. So i grabbed my new cooler from walmart i had just gotten, tossed it in, and drove it a couple hundred yards up the street to a pond and let it go. Happy ending.
Turltlie the turtle.

So i splashed the boat this weekend twice. It flys .. but within the first 30 minutes i ran up in some shallows and wacked my skeg before i could slow down enough to stop. It didn't hit hard but hard enough i guess to bend the skeg. Take a look. Can this be fixed ? Can i just slowly bend it back maybe by clamping down on it with a large crecent wrench and tweeking it back to shape ? Its made of aluminum right ? Live and learn.

Here is a photo of my freshly installed capacity plate. A whopping ten bucks got me that plate. Better than late 70's foil decals right ?

A closer picture of my switch panel i installed. Nothing labeled yet.

Lastly an attempt at uploading a video i took with my iphone a moment ago. I have a gripe i need to get off my chest. I hate boat trailer jacks. Mine is so sloppy at the rotating hinge that the pin that you pull on to engage and disengage the jack comes out from the slop and movement. It came out earlier and almost fell on my foot. ( im wearing flip flops. Is there a fix for this ? I'm about to junk this new atwood jack and buy a good one, altho the good ones probably have the same problem ?

Re: 1977 Starcraft 14' Holiday Restoration has officially begun

I "crossing guarded" a turtle across the road near the state boat launch a couple weeks ago. I was on my bike, and kept hovering around it until it got across the road. It looked like the walking lady approaching in the distance thought I was nuts or something riding around in small circles! She looked a little apprehensive until I left.

Nice plate you had made. What I need is some version of the one that's hard to see behind your control lever. Is that the original or one you had made? My original foil one didn't have any of the number-of-persons information on it.

I haven't experienced the jack problem, the spring that keeps pressure on the pin works pretty well on both my trailers.

Yea my ID plate is factory original. It's actually a plate and not a foil sticker. Heavy guage aluminum.
If you send your plate to walshes, i'm sure they can duplicate it perfectly. Just write to them with whats stamped in each slot in case they cant read it. I bet they do it for less than 25 bucks .. well worth it in my opinion ..

Looks great I really like the decals. Watched your jack video man that thing is sloppy never had one flop around like that if the jack is new have you tried contacting the manufacturer? I really doubt its supposed be that loose at the pivot. Great looking boat !!

Re: 1977 Starcraft 14' Holiday Restoration has officially begun

atwood made the jack .. got it at walmart .. so im sure some chinese dude made it in china .. i guess ill have to get a better quality jack and spend some money ...

I have a question .. once my boat planes, if i cruise at speed just above plane then the boat rides like a dream, but if i accelerate much faster i get a bow bounce .. bounce bounce bounce bounce on the water ... what causes this ? .. remember i dont have power tilt and trim on my 87 50hp johnson ..

Right now i cant even open her up all the way the way at the RPMs the engine is meant to run at .. i could get an easy 15 mph faster if i could just find a way to stop the front end from hopping or bouncing across the water .. i cant imagine a hydrofoil will help since its planing fine .. i read on google and elsewhere that maybe the prop is pitched wrong ? The engine came of a heavier boat .. fiberglass 16 foot trihull .. altho i think the prop is factory omc, aluminum.. i can get prop specs .. i think i saw markings on the prop the other day when removing prop to tap out dent lightly with hammer and grease splines .. the cav. plate is even with bottom of boat so i know its a 20 inch transom with 20 inch shaft .. and the current manual trim is set at 1 from dead bottom .. i have 4 more holes to try .. i guess i could play around next time im out ..

Lastly thank the load for manual trim tabs .. i loosened mine up and turned the back end towards the right ( direction it was pulling ) and now i have NO pull on my steering wheel at any speed .. on splash day it was pulling heavy to right .. i had to death grip the wheell.

any help would be great . thanks

It might be helpful to know how fast your going and what kind of rpm's your getting when this happens? I think I would try the lowest hole on the manual tilt and see if better or worse check the speed with a gps if no speedometer. Also might try getting a little more weight in the front Bring along your heaviest fishing buddy:) If it helps either move some weight forward ( bat, fuel tank ) or bring him with all the time for ballast :D
