That side by side pix is AWESOME

Goes to show how little changed between 2 models or over time.....
Jas may ask for copyrights to that pix, so he can use it as his new screensaver

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

This morning I got the transom glued up. I still need to cut out the final shape but that will be tomorrow after the glue sets. I might go mess around with the star trek a little now.....

Glue on both faces for good adhesion.

Both boards together, I screwed it together with a bunch of drywall screws. I'll fill those holes in with thickened epoxy when I'm ready.

I had good glue squeeze out all the way around. I checked it with a straight edge and it's within 1/16 of an inch. I believe that's within Mercruiser specs. I used Titebond III waterproof glue for the glue-up.

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

I decided to do a little sanding on the hull. I was using 80 grit on the orbit sander and it worked really well. I feathered out the edges on any scratches or chips to try to hide them when I get the final coat of paint on. I need to get some marine tex to fill in the holes from the speedo pitot in the transom. I plan on painting the transom before bolting anything up so I have a nice smooth layer of paint. After that I'll install the transom and get it flipped to paint the bottom. I still have a ways to go before that step since I want to get the glue and carpet remanants off the inside and I need to get the gluvit down still.

I got the transom cut out and test fitted today. It turned out pretty nice. I still need to cut out the keyhole but that shouldnt take to long.

Crosscut looks good.

The angle of that last pic makes it look oblong but I assure you its not.

wow man, you're flyin' through this like a banshee! Looking great!!

That's an interesting idea of painting the transom before fastening. Do you plan to put a subsequent coat of primer/paint over the bolts/5200, etc.?

Ill be using stainless bolts so I wont be painting them. Any excess 5200 around the bolts and such will be wiped clean.

Won't stainless hardware react negatively with aluminum?

I think this is only an issue when used in saltwater. All the factory hardware was stainless so it shouldnt be an issue.

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

also generally only an issue when it will remain in water or at least stay wet. you gotta have an electrolyte for the galvanic reaction to work. so anything above the waterline, likely never an issue. oh, and he's right, SC originally used SS fasteners for your transom, and no one i can recall has had problem with galvANIC CORROSION AROUND THEIR BOLT HOLES. oops so i wouldn't worry.

what might be worth considering is suggestion i recently saw from iBoats metal guru Weldzilla, that if using the same grade stainless bolts and nuts (18-8 or 316), you use anti-seize for any you may want to disassemble in future. SS is super prone to galling, and this helps.

I usually use anti sieze. I have never had a problem with them galling and I deal with them everyday in a very wet enviroment.

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

I made some backing plates for the stern towing eyes. They are 3/8" thick and 4" x 4". This will help keep the nuts from sucking into the wood. Ill make something similiar for the bolts running across the top.

Yes.If 5200 is used and the bolts aren't over tightened, squeezing it all out,it will isolate the two metals from each other.Galvanic corrosion will proceed if they two metals are in contact with water at the same time.Salt water speeds up the process.

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

Just to add to what B2 said - Stainless and AL will react but it is the least reactive of any other metal. Copper is about the worst. Somewhere on the Net I ran across a galvanic compatibility chart, I'll see if I can find it again.

Also, you have to be careful with the anti-sieze, some are copper based. It doesn't play nice with AL.
