Now that you guys mention it. I don't see the spark advance lever move either. You need to link and sinc.

Also, I think you may have more than one cylinder down. I don't think adding one cylinder is gonna get you up to 5800RPMs.

In your video I could not see your linkage move. Did you notice if the linkage continued to move after it reached WOT? I am looking for an less complicated thought. Watch your linkage as you slowly increase throttle. See where it hits your WOT and then decide how much future it will go. I am thinking throttle linkage may not push linkage far enough.

The throttle butterflys are definetly openening up all the way. I checked that for sure, the timing advance linkage I need to double verify.

Very possible that its loosing spark on 2 cylinders. The motor makes a drastically different sound once you get to 30-40% throttle. It goes from ballsy to flat. The powerpack on the starter motor side seems to be an aftermarket that was replaced. I wonder if its going or not getting strong enough pulse from the stator @ higher RPM.

Pull the spark plugs, connect a spark tester, use a remote starter button and test spark while cranking in gear at WOT.

You may be failing on two cylinders from a broken wire in the timer base, losing connection as the timer base rotates to full advance.

I'm not an expert on this motor as I'm having my own difficulties with a 69- 85HP Johnson but is there a vacuum high speed cutout on the motor?
It may be faulty and it may be limiting the rev's?
Just a suggestion? The pulsepack sugggesion by another could be also a place to look too!

Have you confirmed the timer base under the flywheel is rotating ,stick free, that is your timing,it connects to top of throttle arm,if not that, you are droppng cylinders, losing 2 on same side usually = the power pack, opposite ,likely coil breakdown, but grounds are a must to be clean on powerpacks and coils.Be sure to let us know the fix

If you don't have a timing light:

1) the old remove the spark plug
2) ground the tip to the block
3) look at the spark for the spark plug

This won't tell you how hot the plug is firing, but ends speculation that plugs aren't firing.

Check spark advance linkage.

It's hard to tell, but it looked like the timer base linkage moved. I'm right there with a timer base issue. I think a spark check on all cylinders at various throttle positions would be a good test.

Hey Shawn, did anyone win the ten bucks. We can only learn when people share their results.Awaiting your answer.
Oh and if its not fixed, check for water in the fuel and ,uh,I would change the 4 coils.PM me for info how to get the 10 bucks 2 me.Beware of Johnny come latelies trying to cash in on my reward.

Re: 1978 140HP Johnson, still wont go anywhere! $10 to whoever figures it out!!!!!

Its FIXED!!! I ended up just replacing all (4) coils. I was getting completely intermittent "on and off" loss of spark on the 2 bottom coils even while the motor was idling. After that it still ran kinda crappy, but if you applied throttle REALLY REALLY SLOW it would eventually rev out over 5k!

Turned out my new "FRESH" gas, was loaded with water! I want to blow that gas station up for the aggervation they caused!! But on a sane note, after changing that.... low and behold after 30min of run time, its seemed to start running great. Fuel/water seperator is next purchase. Now we have put 5hour on the motor and its running/starting fantastic. My home done link&sync should probably be redone. But thats what winter is for.

If anyone thinks they justifiably won the $10, PM me....lol

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL FOR THE HELP!!!

Get real used to the water in the fuel with E-10. It'll only get worse. You'll also experience phase seperation. When you get your seperator / filter make sure it's 10 micron. The 27 micron won't cut it with E-10.

Just a hunch,

I think you should change all 4 coils.
And check for water in the fuel.

Do I win?
