She looks great!:)

All my screwdrivers look like that or worse. I use em for all sorts of stuff, sometimes even driving screws.

Yah, I found myself at Lowes the other day and was about to grab some blue foam board - like $4 more per sheet than Menard's. All the little stuff adds up in then end ya know. I am really glad I have one right near by.

Cheers man!:)

There's plenty of Arauco ply up here if you feel like driving to Lansing. The south Lansing Lowe's and the west side Menard's both have it in stock.:)

The paint looks good, it just needs some sun reflected off the lake:D

Yeah it's sad about not having it around my area! I even asked at Lowes, and they had no idea what it was. I'm sure hoping that Arauco is better than some of the junk I've seen at my Lowes and Home Depot .

Thanks for the paint comment, I agree!

Thanks Jas! Ohh how I love the usefullness of a screwdriver :). Yeah the same exact foam board at Home Depot is $7 more than the stuff I asked on at Menards. That would sure add up seeing as I will need a couple of them (not sure how many yet). I would pay to have a Menards close by me, too much of a monopoly around my parts, we need a third option...

Quick question here. For you guys using the 4x8' by 2" foam boards how many did you use? I'm about to go up and get some either today, or this week and want a good idea of how many I will need. I'm thinking at least 2, but want a better guess from the Pros around here :D.

Anyone have any idea how many foam 4x8' by 2" panels I might need? I'm making the trip this Friday. I have my Epoxy now, and will try to Gluvit when the weather warms up  you would think we wouldn't have snow in mid-April...

I could prolly help ya out if you were looking to throw in a bunch of stuff that should have gone into the recycling tub:rolleyes::facepalm:

Hey my apologies - I had the boat cover off ready to shoot some close ups of a sandy deck only to find the camera batt was dead. Sorry man. Next time I get the cover off I'll hook ya up.

Snowin in MI? I hadn't noticed:D

(coming down hard this morning up my way)

My GUESS-TIMATE for a 16 footer would be 6-8 sheets.

Heck with the prices of the foam I don't blame you! :D I'll just make sure to use a plexi-glass deck if I go your way.

No problem on the pictures! I appreciate it a lot! It was too windy yesterday anyways  I'm ready for way better weather. Yup we had it pretty good around these parts this mornin' too. You'd think you wouldn't have to keep the fire goin and could crack the windows by now... Thanks for coming by!

Thanks Wood! I'm going to do some measurements and give myself a better idea. 6-8 does sound about right though, way better off than my previous guess. And if I get too many it's an excuse to go back to Menards and return them for other boat stuff :D. Thanks for dropping by my thread!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Well some stuff followed me home today! :D We are getting somewhere now.

0422011232.jpg

Don't worry it was strapped down much better than in that picture!

Here's what I got. Not everything I really wanted to, but glad I went up for the Arauco and foam.
-3 Sheets 5/8" Not Arauco, but still very good without many voids and pretty flat.
-1 Sheet Arauco 1/2" for the side panels
-1 Sheet Arauco 3/4" for the transom. Hopefully that's enough
- 3 Sheets of 2" closed cell foam

I am very impressed with the price and the quality of the Arauco. Just wish it came in 5/8"! 3/4" felt like it would be too heavy for the deck, and I wanted a step up from 1/2" since I'm not going to be reinforcing anything. I'm also sure I will need more foam, it's just that I didn't want to get too much. It was worth the trip just for the quality of the ply!

So I need to clean out the hull, and now that the weather is getting better finally Gluvit can go down. I'm going to try and get my deck, and transom cut out and test fit this weekend. Then will start on Epoxy this week for the bottom sides.

Happy Friday guys! :D

Boat building material, love it! Lets see what cool stuff you can make out of it, eh!

Yah, 5/8" Arauco would be nice.

I sure hope I can make something of it too! Tomorrow will be a nice cleanup day, and get stuff out of the garage. It's really packed in there right now. If I get time I'll try to make something happen. I'm ready to get this boat done!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Ok some more questions guys! Sun is out now so today is looking pretty good.

Where have you guys gotten your rivets? I didn't have much time at Menards yesterday otherwise I would have gotten them there. Home Depot only had 1/8" and no 3/16"

When putting down the deck should I try to utilize the existing holes? This may sound funny, but I really don't want to go drilling too many holes in the stringers and ribs if I don't have to. Any tips there?

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Well, for your deck, since you are going 5/8", HD/Lowes won't have what you need. You'll probably need to order them. You could always go with decking or stainless screws, many of the guys have used them with success. I used a few when my rivet just didn't want to grab the rib. With a little 5200/epoxy on them, they won't work loose.

Don't bother trying to hit your old holes. Man that would be really tough and you'd be drilling a bunch of extra holes in your deck trying to line em up.

Have a good one!

Do you have a local Fastenal or Grainger?

Thanks Jas!

EZ, I do have a local Fastenal I ordered stuff online from them before and there is one close by. I guess I will check their prices.
I think Graingers is a bit further away, I will check online for their stuff as well. Thanks!

I may just go with screws for the deck... I'll sit on it for the weekend. Now out to start cleaning up stuff ...

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

I got all my rivets from http://www.rivetsonline.com/ They are from the Detroit area and shipping is never more than 2 days, and their prics are good. Go a head and drill away, who will ever know? and I bet you don't plan on ever doing it again.

I picked up a couple sheets of foam yesterday as well. I had them laying in the bottom of a 6x8 trailer that has 3' tall sides. I thought they would stay put, but halfway home I saw one go airborne. Poor people behind me prolly thought a sheet of plywood was coming at them

Anyway, good progress!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks DJ, I'll check there too!

Yeah that stupid foam is scary stuff just loading it with any wind is a pain. Glad I had those sheets of ply on top, otherwise it would have been gone. I think I'd rather hit a sheet of foam with my car than a sheet of ply though . Those people behind you were probably changing their shorts after that one :).

It really is too bad I missed the photo of how many tie downs and stuff were on that stack. It barely moved on the way home. This is one of the reasons to buy a full sized truck with an 8' box :D.

We really have some really nice weather today! Garage is cleaned up a bit, and got the extra holes on the transom patched with some JB. Now to try to cut some wood :D. Just taking a lunch break.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Ok so I did a ton today it seems like. Including a little screw up... I JB welded some holes in the transom, cleaned the garage (not fun), mowed some grass, worked on the lawn mower, and cut one piece of wood for the boat. Productive day for the most part, and a beautiful one as well.

HPIM2414.jpg

Here are the holes I'm filling in. I've decided against a speedo, for now. The hole was an inch wide anyways, so filled that in with a backer of aluminum. They will need to be toped off again soon then sanded once dry. I'll figure out where the transducer will go later by the way.

HPIM2415.jpg

Got my first piece cut, looked nice on the sawhorses

HPIM2416.jpg

Then tried it in the boat... Doh, didn't check again before cutting. I had traced it when the other piece was flipped so it flipped the opening for the bilge . Any suggestions here? I think it falls right before a stringer so I should be good, but that's a huge opening for the bilge. So should I keep it and make it larger, try to make a patch for the one side, or just get a new sheet? A new sheet seems like a waste in my opinion. I know, I know measure twice cut once  Just got a bit excited when I realized new wood was going in.

And yes I angled the edges :D.

Hope everyone in Michigan enjoyed the weather today! It's about time!

Heck, put your bulge pump down in there and pretend like you made that cut on purpose for pump access:D. Then we will think you are a super sharp boat builder and envy your superior skills.:)

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Jas, I could do that :D sounds good. No super boat building skills here though haha.

DJ, the way it was before was that the elongated side was towards the port side, where my plug is, and I fliped that around so now I don't have access to the plug unless I make it larger on that side.

This is how it was before, way at the back of the picture.
IMG_8407.jpg

Thinking about it now it probably won't matter much if I have more access back there anyways. I'll check to make sure it will all work out, and I think it will now. Just need to make a couple more cuts and open things up. I could always make a flap or cover up if I need the room. Ohh this is what I love about this place I can think out loud, and won't be yelled at for talking about the boat too much (well almost)
