Thanks Huron! It's a real good think you can't look close at the paint. You would see all the problems with it  probably just need to get out the buffer or some turtle waz :).

Splashwell was sort of a pain to get out at the time, but it sure does make things easier.

Yup pretty much all the lakes are open now (more motivation!). But boy has it been cold this year! I remember that last year the first week of April was in the 80's...

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Learned an important lesson today... Don't spray paint in your garage without making a paint booth to remove the overspray or stuff in the air. I had painted the bottom quickly and didn't have the door open enough, or there wasn't enough airflow. Luckly I had the important stuff covered over, but the paint lingered in the air.

I guess when the car got pulled in that night I should have realized that there was still paint in the air even on the other side of the garage. Now there is a very light coat on the car , call me stupid cause I am, but I'm just posting this so no one makes the same stupid mistake I did. So that's what I've been doing today, trying to get the paint off the car. It's coming off a bit, but some of the looks might be from a fail of a carwash that put some thick junk on the car as a "protector".

So yup total duh moment... Should have known better. And now it's time for spring cleaning so the boat is on hold for a bit. I'm going to place orders this weekend. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to make the trip up to Menards or just get everything at Home Depot or Lowes. Thinking out loud here again

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Feeling like I'm talkin to myself here :). I will assume everyone is busy with their projects ;). So sorry for the triple posts.

Got the hull nice and washed down tonight. Started cleaning up the transom, and tried to unclog the limber holes. Limer holes will need some more work, and any suggestions there would be appreciated some are very stubborn to get un-clogged. Will fill the hull with water tomorrow to clean out again, and check to see where my worst leaks are. Then Gluvit sometime soon...

I'm planning for a May 25th splash date. The same date she was first splashed last year. I hope I can make it, it's crunch time :D. Here's a list of what still needs to get done, I'm sure I will forget a lot of important things:facepalm:, but it's nice to have an idea of what all needs to be done. Also let me know what you think of the things on the list.

Things I still need to do:
-Gluvit
-Paint topsides/stripe
-Cut out deck, and epoxy
-Cut sidepanels, other parts/paint (going with EZ here and will just use paint to coat them)
-Cut out transom/epoxy
-Rig transom (ubolts,ect.)
-Foam (going with closed cell foam board)
-Lay the deck
-Consoles in
-Wire
-Steering cable
-Carpet
-Sidepanels
-Windsheild
-Rig outboard
-Outboard impeller/lower unit oil
-Paint outboard (if I feel like it this year)
Splash?

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

I hear ya buddy. I got a double wammy as I sanded my hull and painted in the garage. Pretty much everything has a white/blue dusting on it. My bike was the only thing that I was really bummed about, hopefully I can get it cleaned up.

A small knife of some sort and a pressure washer should get those limber holes cleaned out. I sprayed from the top of the rib too and all sorts of stuff was blown out.

That is one ambitious list for 6 weeks, go for it!!!! (that would be a 6 month list for me:eek:)

I'll be watching and cheering for ya!:)

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks for coming by Jas! Yeah sanding is not my favorite thing to do at all , but I think that the dust might make it easier to get some of the paint off in places. Sorry bout the bike man, got my tool chest pretty darn good, I've found that carb cleaner works the best just need to be extra carefull and try out a small spot first.

Thanks for the tip on the limber holes, I'll try that out today! I must have some rocks or rivets stuck in there bad.

Notice I didn't give a year :D I'm hoping I can do it by maybe 2012? If I can get workin and a couple hours a day on her then I think I might hit that date! I always like to make things earlier and try to get myself going rather than set it for next year, and not do anything.

Supposed to be 70 something today? Sweet! On the list today: fing drain plug (uh-oh), unclog limbers, wash out hull, check for leaks, tighten a couple of rivets that need it.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

That's a real bummer about the overspray, my friend who paints was over a couple days ago and he was telling me all about how to cover everything in the garage for that reason. I will probably use a paint booth since I have access to one for free.

Don't worry about finding the plug today, you can use a plastic bag stuffed in there for the leak test.

That's a pretty ambitious list, I broke my resto up into two years so I could pace myself and not make too many mistakes:D

Hope you don't find any leaks!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks Huron, that's awesome that you have access to a free paint booth :D. Yup learned my lesson...

Cool I don't have to search for the plug! Thanks!

If I get most of it done so she can be used at that date I will feel great. Maybe leave other things off if they really don't need to be done. We're planing a trip to the Houghton Lake area this July, so I need to make sure everything is safe and ready to go before then. Otherwise the boat is staying home :(.

I'm sure I will find a couple leaks. I messed up a couple holes when drilling out the rivets, just a tad off, nothing major. It will definitely be better than what she was this summer . I sure had a lot of water leaking in, one day I had to call a tubing trip short cause for some reason the bilge pump wasn't going on, got back home and the pump worked fine. I think that time the water was almost up to the floor, at least in the bilge it was...

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Just put in my orders for epoxy, gluvit, and a new trailer jack :D. All from different places . So that's one thing done. Epoxy I ended up going with Clarkcraft, so I will see how it will turn out.

Next order will be from iBoats for all my electrical, and transom stuff, and about everything else I will need to get her ready.

Also will be puting in the new rotary steering that EZ has been posting a link in about everyones thread I've read. You'd think he works for them :p :D

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Pulled her out on the gorgeous, summer-like day :D, and did a quick leak check. Not really bad. Just two rivets to tighten up (ones that I did) and the rest will get a nice coat of Gluvit. My Limber holes worked surprisingly well from what I had done yesterday, so I didn't mess around with them much. She is now cleaned out and ready for Gluvit, which is on its way! I know you guys are probably getting tired of the same pics over and over, but I need a sun shot. Paint looked decent, but not all area are all glossy. Still not bad, I kind of like the almost glossy look yet not full on gloss.

What is that below? Water reflection on the paint? Time for summer, and some water! :D Hope everyone is enjoying this amazing weather in Michigan!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

4 posts in a row  Sorry guys!

I've decided to redo the topsides paint. I'm going to do a quick light sand, and then put on another coat of the gloss finish. This time I will try to make sure it gets glossy enough. Problem is that some parts are glossy and others aren't; this was because I didn't thin enough, or an adjustment was off I think. I thought I would be fine, but I know that it will bug me in the end so I will do it now when it's easier.

Gluvit, and epoxy is now on the way :D Sweet!

Sorry for all these posts about the same thing... Guess I just like posting around here, and seeing what you guys think :). This sure is an iBoats made boat and I'll need to do something in the end to thank everyone.

BG, I bought my Aruca ply from Lowes. HD didn't have it and we don't have a Menards. Actually, I bought my foam board, plywood, ss screws, carpet, heck just about everything from Lowes. Nice job so far. Keep posting your pics. If it gives you motivation go for it. Lord knows I can use some inspiration.

Another tool to clean limber holes is a used hacksaw blade. They are flexible and you can add some black tape for a handle. If you can get a power washer it blasts years of crud out of them too. Your project is looking good and thanks for keeping up with the pictures.

Yuppers a used hacksaw blade works wonders, that is what I did with mine and it cleaned the limber holes out quit nicely. Then the pressure washer really did a good job of cleaneing stuff out. I also sprayed from the top of the ribs down inside and blew all kinds of years of gunk out with it.

Sure is! Beat's having paint all over the inside of the boat!

Glad to see you around here again :). Thanks fsh! I will give a call to my Lowes and see what their price is. Menards is about an hour away from me, and gas is really up there so it might be worth to get it at Lowes.

Thanks GLG! I might try that, but they were working ok when I checked for leaks. I will put that to use if I can find one. I've got a powerwasher, and yeah lots of stuff comin out of them. Thanks for coming by the thread!

Thanks Kelly! Like I said above, that's what I'm planing to do. I was doing some from the top of the ribs before I tried my attempt at uncloging them, lots of stuff in there. Glad there is some reinforcement around here on what to do:D. Thanks for coming by!

OK guys! Got another coat of paint on the hull after a quick sand. I'm hopeing to not have to do another coat, but I will see how it comes out. I'm glad I'm doing it my peace of mind will be better, and it will be shiny :D :p. Also my UPS guy droped off the Gluvit! So another quick wash in a couple days, and I'll be putting down Gluvit!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Gluvit, and my trailer jack came today! Still waiting on epoxy from Clarkcraft, how long did it take you to get it for anyone that has gotten it? Sweet! :D Do I need to clean the hull with anything before Gluvit goes down? I've scrubed with soap so far and washed out. Just need to do another wash with the powerwasher, and make sure the limbers are pretty much clean. And to remind myself, two rivets need to be tightened. I'm hoping that next week I can get my wood, and get Gluvit down... Times a wastin.

Ohh almost forgot. I am now happy with my topsides, very nice and shiny now. I will need to get a picture later, will get the stripe done on the computer this weekend as well.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

I think I got my resin in three or four days. They are in Buffalo so not too far away. Maybe they had it back ordered since so many folks are working on boats this time of year? I had mine shipped in Feb and they might have been kinda slow then.

As long as you get any oil/grease off the hull and it's dry you are all set for Gluvit. Powerwashing is a good idea.

This thread needs more pics! :D

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks Huron! I just emailed them, just to make sure it all went through. I'm thinking that might be what's happening. Heck all of us Starcrafters around here might be buying these epoxy place dry :D.

Cool that's not too hard to get the grease off, I've got a bit of corrosion near the bilge. I'm going to do a 50/50 water vinegar before the foam goes in to help stop that.

I guess this thread does need more pictures :D. I will try to go out tonight and get some of the new paint.

--------------------

Just went to both Lowes and Home Depot. Neither have Auarco :(. Heck I couldn't even find any 3/16" rivets. So I'm thinking I might make the voyage up to Menards. Even the price of foam was enough to make it worth the trip to me.

I did talk to a nice employee at Home Depot and helped him out with fixing a small crack in his 14' aluminum boat. Told him to have someone who can weld aluminum put a small patch over it, then seal the rivets with Gluvit :D Hope I said the right thing. I love the info I get off iBoats.

I said pics so here they are! :D

Not too bad, but not nearly as good as alot of the projects around here. It works though. Not sure why it doesn't all show up glossy... It sure looks like in in person.
IMG_8878.jpg

You can kinda see my painted up screwdriver  don't use your tools to open paint cans...
IMG_8884.jpg

Got a couple of these around, but I really don't feel like taking them out. They add character to her :).
IMG_8887.jpg

So still waiting to do the stripes. Just need to sand the topsides and transom still. Then paint both of those. Im still shooting for May26th, but I got a lot to do still and I don't really feel like rushing things. I'll see how we are in a couple weeks.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

There's plenty of Arauco ply up here if you feel like driving to Lansing. The south Lansing Lowe's and the west side Menard's both have it in stock.:)

The paint looks good, it just needs some sun reflected off the lake:D
