Hello spring :D! Goodbye winter! If this keeps up the lakes will probably be opening up in the next week or so.

So today's done. Feeling great, and acomplished something for once. I still am amazed by the weather.

So here are some better pics. First one it before paint.

And now with paint. What a difference!

Some of the areas where I didn't sand enough. All are on the bottom so it doesn't really matter.

And now I have 1 and 1/2 coats of the finish done. The starboard side has 2 coats now. These are all pretty light ones, so we'll see how things turn out.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Today I finished up what I started, and put on a couple more coats. It is lookin pretty darn good. I could see the screwdriver in it even after it had dried a bit. I sure hope it turns out ok. I don't have any pictures though, the light isn't good enough :D. This weekend I'll be busy so the boat will be sitting and drying.

I'm hoping to get those last rivets done next week, and the trailer painted quickly. I need to order my epoxy and a couple other things, so maybe this weekend as well. Have a great weekend guys!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Quick update. Paint had time to dry over the weekend, so I checked on her today. Bottom could use another coat(if I feel like it), and the sides might get another too after she is flipped. Overall I am impressed though, the gun worked great it was just my fault that it didn't go on to well because I didn't thin it enough . I need to get a quick coat of paint on the trailer too, but they are saying the "s" word again :(
I also tried to scratch the paint off with my fingernail, no luck :D. Tried it with a screwdriver and it wasn't easy but it did come off. Hopefully after some nice dry time it will work out.
I'm going to order my epoxy from Clarkraft soon. I am thinking about using 5/8 plywood or should I just go with 3/4 like others are using?

I am just going to put in what I took out which was 1/2". Some guys who have gone 3/4 fought getting their side panels in and you'll have to remount your consoles because the holes won't line up...my .02...

Yeah that would work too DJ, and probably make is easier in the long run. If it held up for that many years then it should work, and heck it supported me fine. It's also a lot more weight and the epoxy should make it strong as well. I believe that my boat still had the original floor too. Thanks DJ :D. Gotta think out loud all the times.

1/2" in my rig too. If I didn't have so much structure sub deck I would have gone with 5/8". 3/4" would be super strong and beefy, heavy though.

I looked back but didn't see - have you got two stringers or just one? I am assuming two eh?

Jas, you really beefed up your stuff below deck. I'm not sure if I would be able to beef it up as much as you did :D you've got a tank now. I have two stringers in mine, and they weren't even held by any rivets when I took them out(corrosion I think) hence the no picture either. So when everything goes back together it should be even more sturdy than it was before. I'll see what happens...

I think 5/8" would be a great compromise. I put a 3/4" deck in both my projects and I really like the solidness. Personally I wouldn't go 1/2" unless I was glassin' both sides. I had to adjust my consoles but it wasn't a big deal. (actually I lied, it was a big deal but it was such a big deal that there was no way just the floor thickness change messed them up as bad as they were :p. It was just getting the windshield lined up that was a pain)

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

I used 3/4" ext grade(with some voids) and it absorbed so much resin that I think it's a bit heavy sometimes, but extremely solid and I like that. I have fishing buddies that are 250lbs+ so that is a good thing.:)

I had no issues with side panels, windshield or consoles fitting, but my original deck was long gone when I got the SS.

Next time around I might opt for the 5/8" or 1/2" but use arauco or marine grade and add one layer of some type of mat or cloth with the epoxy for lightweight added strength. I would also add aluminum like Jason did on his Islander so the span is not as long between ribs/stringers.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks EZ, and HA! I guess my plan will be to go with 1/2 and beef up the underneath structure, or 5/8 and maybe add a layer of glass or something. Or just leave it the way it was, and if I go crashing through the deck one day I can say you all warned me :D.

Why must the weather change all of a sudden for the worst? I was just getting used to the nice temps :(.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Got some things done on the trailer just now, and all rivets are done now as well. I have everything off the trailer that doesn't need to be there for paint. I wasn't going to take off my rollers, but looked at in and said I might as well make sure all the bolts are ok and it didn't take too long anyways. It's the whole assembly, which is aluminium anyways. All look great, and since I don't have much room in my garage they all went onto the bottom of the boat to test the paint durability :D. I think it turned out pretty darn good.

Ok now for the trailer, what color?
Option 1 Blue:
IMG_6682.jpg

This is how it was when I got it and it will match the top part of the boat.

Option 2 White:
I'm not sure about this one, it just seems too much white for me.

Option 3 Black:
I would think this would get way to hot in the summer, even more so than the blue did.

I'm really leaning towards keeping it blue, but thought I would ask for some input from you guys :D.

The blue would look nice with the hull color (I think you are painting to original, stripes and all, eh).

White is good for visibility while in the water, course gets dirty quick too.

Blue to match the boat. Mine will eventually get redone to match the red that will be on my boat.

I vote for white, it makes it easiest to see in the water, and also at night when you might bang your shins on the tongue in the driveway/garage. I'm gonna paint mine white or light gray.

Yup I'm going to try to go as original as possible with the hull paint job. I think it might be too much white otherwise. I guess being able to see the trailer would be good thing :D.

I think you had said it earlier, but were you going with painting it the way it was originally(the stripes)? I really think matching would look nice. Heck even a matching tow rig :)!

Ok then, that all makes tons of sense. Light gray sounds kinda nice too, it wouldn't be way too much white like I'm worried about.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

I did a sort of resto on a 1974 Starcraft. I used 60 grit flap wheels to strip my trailer, worked great with a cheapo harbor freight angle grinder, until it burned up. I used black rustoleum on the trailer. Black hides alot of stuff and looks good with anything. I used 3/4 inch Marine grade CCA treated Marine plywood with no voids for my flooring. Fastened down to stringers with stainless steel screws. Here is a link to my rebuild. http://www.pontoonstuff.com/psforum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4126&title=1974-starcraft I built mine with an eye on an affordable open layout fishing platform.

White or light blue. Whenever I see a black trailer in a CL ad it always looks like it needs work :p
