Well you could strap it with a few braces and go slow....it should survive.

Use a few pieces of wood inside and run a strap around to keep it together. Be careful of the bottom that you do not develop a hook in the hull

Re: 1978 Glastron GT-150 "Baby Boomerang" Restoration - HELP!

I took the motor off of baby boomerang last night. It was WAY heaver than I suspected. Nevertheless, with the help of my roommate, the garage ceiling, some chains and come-along the motor is now sitting on the new stand.

I am going to pull the cap off this week and start grinding soon. Are goggles sufficient in keeping dust out of the eyes? I bought a respirator and a tyvex suit. Any other tips on avoiding the itch?

Glad you're taking the top off, it needs to come off to get it done right. Yes the cap should come off as suggested in earlier post but the transom is glassed in to the cap as well and you may need extra force here. Some people cut the splashwell out at the bottom rear along the corner of the bottom of splashwell where it meets the transom. I was able to pry mine off only to cut it later since it was so warped. Yes the equipment you have is fine for non-itchy nights. I didn't even have a tyvek suit.

Re: 1978 Glastron GT-150 "Baby Boomerang" Restoration - HELP!

Here is my latest progress. I have the cap off and I have secured it to the ceiling. This week I will finish ripping out the floor and grind the hull. I have also built a temporary insulated wall behind my garage door to keep the cold out.

I will be running a small Stanley space heater. I do not plan on using it while I am kicking up dust, or mixing chemicals. Any comments or suggestions pertaining to the heater? I was planning on running it for a couple hours to heat up my garage before I work, and after I glass to maintain a temperature that the glass can cure at. What is the optimal temperature for fiberglass curing?

Just a note about "space heaters" If it is a kerosene heater just be aware that tiny droplets of kero are launched into the air when it is first lit and turned off too. Those "invisible" droplets will raise hell when you apply paint and could result in fisheyes......

I like the ceiling hook up...... are you now working under a low bridge??

The space heaters are ceramic elements. The Cap really doesn't get in my way when I'm working on the hull. I'm over all pretty happy with the set up. If my garage were any bigger it would just be harder to keep warm.

Nice boat. Look forward to seeing how it comes along.

Epoxy best cures when temps are above 75 degrees. Not sure where you live, but if the garage temps are in the 50's, it will take a longer time to cure, if it cures fully at all. If you are working with lower temps, be sure you use a faster curing epoxy, or rather a faster hardener.

The other option is that you can also use heat lamps to put heat direction on the surface you want cured.

fyi, when i first worked with epoxy, I glued two pieces of wood together in garage temps of 40 degrees as a test. It took a couple of weeks (maybe less), but those two pieces never came apart.

Re: 1978 Glastron GT-150 "Baby Boomerang" Restoration - HELP!

I am slowly but surely getting the floor and the transom ripped out. I hope to have the hull prepped for stringers and the new transom by Monday. The new wall in behind the door worked wonders for keeping the garage warm. With two heat lamps and a space heater I should have no problem keeping it around 60.

My past experience installing epoxy floors has left me with a fondness for MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) rather than acetone. Any comments concerning it's use?

The rot you'll see on the transom is down near the hull. Just like the stringers, which are obviously on the lowest part. If the stringers are gone the transom has to have rot at the same level. You can also see the bending of the transom (cracks in glass) which a solid one won't do. The metal plates and stuff are crutches to limp it along. You certainly could keep it in and maybe git-rot the lower part of the transom but you're going this far.... It's a constant "well Im in this far.. might as well..." Doh! This boat will only increase it's coolness as time goes on so carry on!

Oh, you can glass lower than that temp (I'd go down to 40) for sure just add more MEKp, test a bit. and/or keep a bit of heat on a smaller area when you work.

The Hull is gutted! FINALLY!!

Tomorrow I grind, this frightens me. I am extremely scared of getting "the itch". I have taken every safety precaution I could think of up the this point, I even bought a full face respirator.

On another note, there is a good chance that tomorrow I will be the proud new owner of a pink/purple 1976 CV-16. If any of you Glastron guys or gals out there need some parts let me know. If I'm not using it I'll make you a hell of a deal!

Looks familiar.........Thought you might find the pics of my '74 GT-160 resto of some interest. You can straighten out the transom and reinforce it with new FG fabric... My transome was really bad.... Your resto looks to be exactly like what we all find when we tear into it...The results of a good job is priceless............

You are MOVING! It never ceases to amaze me the dedication of rebuilders here. Anyway don't forget to move the drain hole to the center low spot. Too much fun with the 150 you had to go out and get a CV?? They are cool boats too.
