This is a 90 hp inline 6. I'm having a problem setting belt timing. After I set it the timing is like 2-3 cogs off from where it is supposed to be. I can adjust it 2-3 cogs and I can set the rest of the distributor to time out right but it will only idle at no less than 1000 rpm, anything above idle seems fine. The distributor disk that I have does not have the rotor side marked it must have wore off. The rotor that I'm using is from a 4 cyl it looks the same and the guy I got it from said its the same thing. I noticed the part number is different from what I had so I'm going to swap back to my original. I'd like to figure out witch way to set the disk. If any body has any ideas let me know.

How do you expect a 6 cyl engine to run on a disc that only has 4 timing slots from a 85 hp 4 cyl?

Re: 1978 mercury distributor disk

If you read my post I said the ROTOR came from a 4cyl. The distributor disk that I'm using has 6 holes. This disk has a top and a bottom side, the bottom side is marked rotor side. On the disk I have the marks wore off. Also the 6 holes in the disk are not the same size. Their is a tab in the center that locks it to the rotor. This tab is not centered between two of the 6 holes, Its of to one side. I looked at every picture I can find of this disk and they don't close enough to to see the "rotor side" marks. I have also confirmed that the 4 cyl and 6 cyl rotors are interchangeable.

This is what it should look like from the dist side.

Correct, are made like this to retard some cylinders a bit when running, has to do with crank and belt flexing.

Only disks that's "even fire" are the ones used on the TII and TIIx engines ( uses 7 main bearings instead of the 5 used on the fishing engines... ).

Verify the timing disks position then read and understand what's written here ... and then follow the guide from start to end....
( your engine are a "direct charge" engine .)

Just to clearify by dist. side you mean top when on engine and rotor side would be down when on engine? Thanks for the info.

Underside when mounted on the engine
or
the visible side ( you can see the whole disk )
or
outside against the rotor and dist. cap .
