If you like reading, this one is for you guys.

Well, I am happy to say that there are very few places these days where people are as helpful as everyone on this forum. I have been reading these forums for a while now and finally decided to officially join. Also, I decided to create a Restoration thread for my 1978 Skeeter as a little time line of the work I am going to do on it, and of course to ask you guys any questions that might, and most certainly will come along.

Just a quick background on the boat; The boat is a 1978 Skeeter Wrangler Sport with a 197 Johnson 140 on it. I purchased it for 800 dollars, along with a custom roller trailer (called something like that). The thing about the boat is that this a fish and ski boat, so you have the 2 bench seats up front instead of the normal deck area you find on most fishing/bass boats. The boat was sat out in the sun for a few years with no real protection from the elements, this took a toll on the seats and carpet. The boat itself was in decent condition with most of it's problems being cosmetic, such as cracked seats, rotted plywood backing for the seats, carpet rotted away and the usual dings and scratches on the gunwales. The motor started up and ran when I got there and it ran decently well for the most part, tilt/trim worked, trolling motor, bilge pump, aerators, etc.

Sadly, didn't take any picture of the boat the day I got it, but this thing was dirty, inside and out.

Day 1:

I began with the usual tune of of the motor, cleaned the carburetors, changed spark plugs, checked compression, bought some new batteries, everything checked out for the most part, and of course gave it a good scrubbing and vacuum. For the moment I had decided to stick with the cosmetic problems and just fish.

Went to the lake a few days later, motor started, and my buddy and I went to our fishing spot, when we decided to move the motor no longer started and began to flood itself. Ended up trolling around the rest of the day and trolled back to the boat ramp.

Day 2:

Got back home, and took apart the carburetors and noticed there was a lot of built up gunk from them sitting around for so long, went out got some rebuild kits and rebuilt both of them. Motor started back up everything was well, so I thought...

Made a road trip with the same buddy out to Lake Fork a few hours away and hoped for better results, not only with fishing but with the boat as well. Well what do you know, the boat didn't start up, and on top of that while attempting to start we basically killed the battery. We switched over some connections to the 2 other batteries to get the electronics working and just went trolling with the old little trolling motor again. We ended up fishing two days with this beast, however if the motor had been running we would have gotten to some better spots farther out.

FYI: This Ram Glide 1550 15/25 Trolling motor is a boss, excellent on electricity consumption and a powerful little thing even when trolling against the current. I'm pretty sure it is the same age as the boat, someone could probably give me some info on that.

Day 3:

Anyway, so I became pretty frustrated with the motor and continued to work on it. I replaced the fuel lines throughout, which seemed to be rotting from the inside and clogging up the carburetor, added a fuel filter to the fuel line just after the primer bulb and continued tuning the throttle and idle. Seems to be running better than ever now.

Day 4 Dec. 20

This is where I am at right now, and also where this becomes a full restoration project for the old 1978 Skeeter. I began looking at the boat and decided that there are a lot of things I want to do to the boat to make it just right.

-Replace all carpet on deck and hatches
-Convert the current Ski style front deck into a full fishing deck with some added hatches and compartments.
-Replace seats.
-Rewire some of the old gauges that aren't working.
-Add lighting to the deck (something I noticed we were in dire need of while night fishing on Lake Fork)
-Repair very minor hull damage where gel coat has been chipped off.
-New carpet for trailer bunks and new wood where needed.
-Repaint trailer since it is painted steel and has some signs of surface rust on places where paint is gone.
-Possibly repaint gunwales (guidance needed here if I decide to do so)
-New accessories such as rod holders and stuff to top it all off.

Re: 1978 Skeeter Wrangler Sport w/ 79' Johnson 140

Day 4 (continued):

I spent the day today making trips back and forth to Home Depot and stripping all of the carpet from the entire boat except for the fiberglass hatches. That will be done tomorrow. I have kept all of the carpet and labeled each piece so that I can used them as templates for the carpet that will be installed.

I have spent a lot of time just getting all the left over adhesive and rubber backing from the old carpet off, using a wide variety of solvents. I have been reading around, and it seems "ok" to leave a little adhesive on. It just looks really bad so I have continued to scrap, scrub, and wipe away.

Next step tomorrow, building the deck.

Also, as promised, pics in the morning. :eagerness:

Welcome to the madness!

A few hints......

Carefully inspect your transom for rot and water intrusion......

Stripping carpet glue and residue is easy with a cup brush on an angle grinder and a soft touch!!

Pictures?????

You are doing good for the motor.... do not forget the fuel pump (check that) and most important change the impellar. I usually do the deflectors, water passages, head gaskets and gear oil (check out the Johnson evinrude section Johnson & Evinrude Outboards The 140 is a great motor!

If you build a casting deck .....plan out for your seat post hole and access to your trolling motor controls.... Seal that deck wood up!

Good luck!

Re: 1978 Skeeter Wrangler Sport w/ 79' Johnson 140

I agree with Bob.

You may also want to drain and flush your fuel tank, probably a fair amount of crud in there too... also clean the screen on the end of the pick-up tube inside of the fuel tank.

Lots of videos on youtube that show how to change the impeller/water pump on different outboards.

Changing the lower unit lube is easy and also very important, if it's milky colored you have problems.

In addition to checking your transom for rot, check your decking too... you don't want to lay new carpet on rotten decking. If you have to remove any decking check your floatation foam for waterlogging, this is a common problem with boats that have been exposed to the elements for an extended period.

Your water pump (impellar) change is exactly like this one here http://forums.iboats.com/engine-fre...ohnson-water-pump-job-photos-lots-309188.html ;)

Re: 1978 Skeeter Wrangler Sport w/ 79' Johnson 140

Thanks for all the tips!

-The transom was the first thing I checked and it showed no signs of rot and was extremely sturdy.
-No rotting on the deck, all of the rotting was on the bench seats which have now been removed.
-Lower unit in good condition, not milky/watery.

Gas tanked were drained, however at the moment one does not seem to be allowing any fuel to be pumped out, might be a cracked tube inside the tank, or something else. The other tank works well and is the one I have been using. Any ideas what it might be? I am planning to removing both tanks today to give the boat a proper restoration.

Also, I will check into the impeller, fuel pump seems to be ok, and I have been wanting to do head gaskets for a while now.

Thanks guys, as promised am uploading pictures from my phone right now.

This picture below is one of my paint questions, where do I find this type of sparkly paint, seems to me like a gel coat? There are some scratches and spots I would like to fix.

What exactly did you do to investigate the condition of the Transom? Did you drill core samples from the inside down low? Did you raise the motor, stand on the lower unit of the motor and bounce Hard to see if the transom had any flex at all?

Re: 1978 Skeeter Wrangler Sport w/ 79' Johnson 140

Day 5:
Removed the remainder of the seats from the boat, A LOT of rot (seems like the plywood backing was not treated at all before instalation). I am still sanding and scraping away at the glue so that I can install the carpet and new deck.

Finished cutting the plywood for the new deck, some more cleaning and battleing with the insane winds that we are having here. Other than that, progress is slowly picking up. I think I had more fun tearing the boat apart...

Ok so I have a few questions, when I pulled off the bench seats there seems to be some black residue left behind where they were. It looks like some kid of adhesive maybe, but I have tried many adhesive removers with no luck. You can see in the pictures below the original brown speckled gel coat and the black/rust left behind by the seats. I would like to try and get the original brown gel coat back, but I feel like this won't be possible.

You can see the brown gel coat and the black stuff that is covering it.

I stood on the lower unit and bounced pretty hard, the Transom seems solid as a rock. No flex at all. No cracks or visible rot. Do you think there is anything else I should be doing to check that?

Re: 1978 Skeeter Wrangler Sport w/ 79' Johnson 140

Since I stood around for most of the day today, I had a lot of time on my hands (better said mind) to think about what to do to the boat. I know deep v hulls are pretty good for bay fishing and lake fishing both and that is sort of what I plan on doing with the boat, I want to prepare it to be both salt and fresh water ready.

Ideas I have for the boat:

-Since I want to be both a salt and freshwater fishing boat, I want ample casting deck space, with still enough room to walk around off the casting deck when out in the bay (When bringing a large fish aboard, protecting against rough waters)
-Thinking about removing the passenger console as I feel it takes up a lot of valuable space
-I would like to have a standing console to be honest, but I feel like it is difficult, unless you guys have some ideas on how to make one (I have the skills and tools)
-Lastly, the main thing whether or not I can do the above is figure out what to do with my paint situation, I was looking into either painting over the existing gelcoat, or maybe even applying Nautolex or something similar to the places there was gelcoat.

If anyone has any experience with any of these things, your input would be greatly appreciated, also any suggestions are also appreciated.

The more I think about the boat, the more ideas I have that come to mind... this is depressing.

Lets see what y'all got!

Welcome to iboats.
Here's a tool I find most useful on my rebuild, if you have a reciprocating saw (sawzall). It beats the heck out of scraping by hand!:D

They have them at Lowes and have different widths, too.

Good Luck!

Great suggestion!
I have one, but I didn't know they had those chisel tips. Thanks!

Re: 1978 Skeeter Wrangler Sport w/ 79' Johnson 140

Day 6:

Finished making the templates for the plywood sheets that I am going to use for the deck, used a sheet of pink foam to cut them out, also cut out storage doors, and tomorrow I'll finish cutting the plywood out, seal it, and glass it. Going to post some pics in the morning.

My main concern at the moment is what to do about paint. I would really like to get the cap of the boat looking good again, but not sure if I need to restore the gelcoat or if I should just forget the gelcoat and paint over it. Some input would be great.

Day 7:

Spent a lot of the day today, standing around at my boat... thinking...

Still confused on the cap paint situation, I would like to get started on the paint before finishing the deck, but i can't seem to figure out what would be best to do in my situation, been reading around and there are mixed opinions about gelcoating or painting.

Also, currently finishing off the deck, should be able to start glassing and putting resin on all the plywood pieces. then its time to buy carpet and hopefully paint. Then comes the fun part, the accessories!

So, you're not going to remove your decking and check for rotten stringers and waterlogged floatation foam?

If I can figure out how/what to paint the cap with, I will remove it. But as of now, I am sort of scared, don't want the hull to warp on me.

Are there any signs I can look for that might suggest the waterlogged foam? or the rotten stringers? The boat had a lot of cosmetic problems when I got it, but not sure what might be going on under the deck.

Sort of what I want the finished product to be.

So I've decided to paint the cap, can anyone recommend a good primer and polyurethane to put over the gelcoat? Or should I attempt gelcoating somehow?

Re: 1978 Skeeter Wrangler Sport w/ 79' Johnson 140

To keep your hull from warping you have to make a cradle for your boat. You can do this by adding additional reinforcement to the trailer to support the hull better, or if you want to work on your trailer too you can make a separate cradle to put your boat on that'll enable you to work on the boat and trailer separately. This thread has some good info about cradles:

http://forums.iboats.com/boat-restoration-building-hull-repair/boat-hull-cradle-help-584635.html

As for signs of below deck problems (foam and stringers), the cosmetic damage and rotten seats are HUGE signs! This damage means your boat has been neglected and exposed to the elements for an extended period of time... this is what causes the below deck damage.

As for painting your boat, this is a good thread about that and you'll find good info on it:

Day 8:

Took your advice grub, read through the paint thread that you gave me, really liked the stuff they are using on there.

Went out today and stocked up on some lumber to build my motor stand and hull stand.
Also, figured out a way I will be able to jack the hull up off the trailer.

Enlisted my father's help and he went ahead and removed the rub rail and some of the accessories on the cap, while I began construction on the motor stand.

Also, we decided we will need something to lift the stand with, so we built a crude but strong "engine crane" for the motor.

Sadly I only have 3 pics to show for the work today.

Heavy duty casters on everything.
IMG_4631.jpgIMG_4632.jpgIMG_4633.jpg

If anyone is interested in how I made this engine lift, I can post some directions.

Tomorrow... Lifting the motor, fishing detaching the cap from the hull, and lifting the boat. Then, it will be Christmas! Which means, I need to prepare the boat for rain, try and fit it inside the garage. Supposed to pour over here Christmas morning.
