Re: 1979 18 ft Sylvan Skipper Rebuild

More pics of electrical.

I'm soldering wire splices and crimping ring terminals. Using adhesive lined shrink tubing. I ran 14 duplex wire to the fuse box behind the dash. Everything will run off that. I'm not really color coding. Blk is always ground on this boat and white/red will be 12VDC. Purple is 12VDC ignition. Blue is instrument lighting. I have green and tan for the temp sensors. I'm reusing some of the original wiring otherwise I would have just color coded everything properly. Not a huge deal to me.

I decided to leave the battery in the stern since a run of battery cable 40 ft long to go under tha floor costs an arm and leg. After reading up on the subject here and elsewhere it seems like a battery just belongs close to the starter motors and I don't want to think about heat under the floor while cranking on the old engine. Besides that this may help balance the weight of the kicker and bracket.

Wiring is pretty much complete although I do need to tidy everything up. Check out the docking lights.

Controls and cables are next.

I moved the tank to the bow.

Is it okay to locate the vent about 1/3 of the way back from the bow? I'm wonding about water getting into the vent itself from splashing?

You can see the vent in the pic.

Re: 1979 18 ft Sylvan Skipper Rebuild

Heres some progress. Got the kicker on and the bracket is killer. Had to set back 1 inch from the transom and also raise the bracket due to the curve of the transom. No problem though. I think it is still correct and functions well. Got the battery in and made a piece of trim around the bilge area to hope stop things from rolling in. Got the top to the dash/instrument panel on. It is 1/2 inch marine ply. Friend of mine took the lead on getting that cut. I had to wet it and set it in the rain with a battery or two weighing down the middle to get the bend in it. After it had the bend I brought it in out of the rain, put the batteries back on and let it dry. Walla-got a good bend. I epoxied it and the painted. I glued this thing down wwith 5200 (hope I aint the one taking it off next. I was wanting the top to bring everything together. I may have gone overboard with the strength factor. I also did not want water getting underneath. I got both sides back on and also installed the control boxes.

The short list: 1) install window; 2) complete tidying up cables and control wiring; 3) duck blind.

This boat is done. Check it out.

Motor steering bar is Marine Tech (http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...hanintel_google&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=107035)

I think everything is correct but I havent taken it out yet. We'll have to see.

The upright pipes and wood on the gunwale are for the duck blind and they'll be removed soon since season is almost over.

With spare motor at $800 and the bracket at $475 the total cost is about $3000. Seems like a lot but I guess now I have a boat made the way I want it and I feel like the workmanship is good. This was a lot of work to do it properly. This is the third one Ive done and I dont think I cut any corners here.

Re: 1979 18 ft Sylvan Skipper Rebuild

I didnt make it in time for duck season in northern IN but I took her out for a ride the other day for the first time since the rebuild. Someone asked about how it rides with the tank in front. In 2-3 foot chop the boat did well. I can definately tell I have more weight forward and it rides better than before. No problems getting up with the 140. I'm glad I did the work. This boat has a nice solid and dry hull. I did need to do some adjusting on the cables. Had the throttle a little too high and the shift cable too far forward (had to move control back past neutral to get it in neutral). I also decided to do the carbs when I got home which it needed before. This motor sometimes will die when moving from neutral to reverse and from nuetral to fwrd. Hopefully, the carb cleaning will do the trick on that issue. Otherwise, I dont know what the deal is. I'll be asking here.

The kicker setup was very nice. The 9.9 ran really well and pushed the boat good enough for emergencies or trolling. I love the Panther bracket so far.

scott,
not to drag up a completed project, but a few questions ...

where did you source the gas tank from, that is what i am looking for. I do like the plumbing for the gas line as it will make it easier should it need to be replaced. nice wiring. if you put wings on the sides it would look like the stealth bobmer.

nice job and thanks for stopping in at my project
