Now is the time to fix it man! Don't sweat it, you can use that PT ply for something cool. I'm sure you'll have huge peace of mind doing it right the first time. Cheers!

Pressure treated wood and galvanized fasteners on an aluminum boat are big nono's.

Got it I'll change out the galvy fasteners with SS, since I have aluminum primer on one side of the pressure treat and kilz2 on the back side of the wood, is there still a problem with corrosion? As long as the aluminum has a barrier between the wood I should be OK?

PS

The deck is not riveted yet, so no worries changing the stainless lags to the redwood ribs.

Sometimes you'll notice the liquid running out when you install a screw or nail. When you install fasteners thru the wood into your aluminum you provide a direct path for the chemicals to follow right to the aluminum.

Thank goodness I only had the board sitting there and not riveted yet!! Thanks for setting me straight on the galvanized lags.
I am satisfied the PT I have is dry I will put two coats of primer on the bottom of the PT and polyurethane the areas close to the rivet holes, the aluminum stringers have two coats of metal primer already. After riveting I will cover the heads with silicone to prevent moisture entering and will also silicone the holes before riveting. I may put some moisture barrier under the rivets between the PT wood and aluminum. I have changed out all the galvanized fasteners with SS

How about some strips of rubber roofing type material or something like that between the wood and the stringers/ribs?

Welcome to the starcraft club karhawk...nice rig you've got there:)

Maybe consider the deck you have as a great template to build a new one with regular exterior ply w/ epoxy. That way you will not have to worry about anything especially since you will be in saltwater.

My next aluminum will come from a place where there is no salt water for hundreds of miles!!!!

I''d recommend Michigan/Ohio/Indiana for a nice clean old tin can, tons of starcrafts over this way:D

My first time on this site. Thank you fellow starcraft lovers!!!

Great boat. I wish i would have found this site yrs ago. I rebuilt my 1975 18ft CC back in 01 and the knowledge of these guys would have been priceless. These boats are probably one of the least likley boats to find in my area and most people know nothing about them. Listen and learn so you wont have to do it twice. I use mine in the salt water cause fresh water is not an option with a gas power boat here. I have to say it hasheld up well but taken a beaten. I used 3/4 marine ply for the transome and floor and painted it with marine deck paint that just wont stick in the marine enviorment that surrounds me. I should have glassed the wood before painting. so paint every yr is only option. Good luck with your project.

We made some progress Sunday and today. Sanded and primed the hull, and wire brushed the trailer and cleaned it. After treating the trailer with acid, neutralizer and primer I will paint it and the hull white with the benjamin moore m22. Since the boat will see occasional salt water use I will use the m22 on the inside of the hull as well. See the flying Starcraft below!

Re: 1979 18' Starcraft starting restoration

I got some more work done on the Starcraft:

Painted the hull and trailer (I tinted the color to swiss coffee a little less bright white)
re-carpeted the wood on the trailer
added some 3M non-slip strips to the trailer
got some new trailer tires and rollers installed
ran new wires and threw out the crappy original steering wheel with a used Doni
wheel I found on Craig's list
painted the inside of the hull with the same M22 in
primed and painted the under side of the floor boards and installed
SS hardware in place of the galvanized bolts I had on the wood stringers

I used a wagner sprayer for the trailer and hull with the M22 thinned out about 10-15% with some dryer added.

Next up:
Paint the platinum grey trim band (Thanks Joey for the great color scheme)on the hull and all the other trim stuff inside, I will spray over the original pebble vinyl with platinum as well.
Design and install the forward seating area, I like the hinge storage doors and carpeted look, but I may go with vinyl, I have a guy in Oakland, Ca. that is good and reasonable. Anybody know where to source aluminum piano hinges that don't cost an arm and leg? Where is a good source for a straight pile carpet?
I will also redesign the gauge console but after some water testing. I will probably go with just RPM, water temp, oil press, alternator and gas gauges.

Here's some shots:

Looking good. I've got to get some work done on my trailer as well as mine is looking like he**. My hinges from Veada should be in soon as I sent the order in on Friday. I'll let you know how they look when I get them in.

Lemme know I will be ready for hinges after sea trials when I put the front seating/storage area together.

Today the floor got screw and riveted, since I am doing 4 captains chairs I used 12" square backing boards and special nuts installed before the board went down. Since the emphasis of this boat will be fishing first everything else second I put the back seats out away from the back corners, I happened to have an old Sea Ray engine cover that I will be able to use with some fabrication. It will have a hinged lid to open up to check the engine etc.

Hey karhawk, quick tip for ya...

Those T Nuts...

You best bet is to take that piece of plywood and lay it on your driveway. Take a big ol sledgehammer and take one or two good solid strikes to sink them in so they are solid. Any more strikes than that and you may compromise the ply. If you just draw them in with the bolt they seat ok, but nearly as well as with a sledge.

How do I know this?

I used to run several climbing walls and we used T Nuts for the climbing holds. I have installed thousands of these things (pumped right arm at the end of installation days).

Cheers!

Thanks for the tip, last thing I didn't was to have those rolling around in the bottom of the boat!

Here are the hinges that came in. Same thickness of material, slightly wider, and just a tad shorter.

They will do and look comparable to what I had. I could have l;ooked longer and got them in stainless and thicker guage but also paid 4x as much also.

Those look like just what I need, what length are they and which company did you get them from?

Thanks
Chris
