Re: 1979 Chrysler - not run in a while

Euro, you are the man! Thanks allot for the effort, I really do appreciate it. When I took the starter apart, that wire was offof the brush and it was out of its "housing" so it wasn't doing anything anyways, so prob just get a new one. I just gave this boat to my brother so I think shelling out 125$ won't totally upset him!

I couldn't find a solenoid on that site, am I mising it?

Thanks again, I will keep you posted

Are you sure your solinoid is bad? Read this thread to test it Solinoid test

Look at the picture I posted there. If that looks like your solinoid and yours is definatly bad let me know. That one is a spare I got on ebay. If you can cover postage I can mail it to you.

Originally posted by eurolarva:
No. You will not get 12 volts on the right side when the key is in the on position. The key should be spring loaded when you turn it clockwise. All the way to the right is the start postition. When you let go of the key it should spring back to the on position. When you have the key switch turned all the way to the start postion you should have 12 volts on the right leg of the solinoid. However if your starter is bad the volts could drop real low and even to zero volts.

Here is the best way to test the solinoid. Disconnect the lead on the right (This should go to the starter). connect your meter to ground and to the post on the solinoid the wire was connected to. Have someone turn the key switch all the way to the right to the start position. Now you should have 12 volts on the right post of the solinoid. If you dont verify the shifter is in neutral. There is a neutral interlock switch on the starboard side of the motor. The small wire on top of the starter solinoid will go to that switch. If that switch is not engaged power wont go to the solinoid and the starter can not be engaged. Hope this helps
Euro, reading this test you had given to try I am thinking that since I was going to disconnect he pos to starter that I can do this test with the starter NOT on the motor correct?

Thanks!

correct. The photo I posted on the other thread I had it hooked up on my work bench. Just connect the negative battery charger lead to the mounting ear on the solinoid and the postitive lead of the charger to where the small (probably yellow and gray wire ) was attached. The current draw on the solinoid will be about 4 amps so you will need at least a 6 amp battery charger to do this.
Re: 1979 Chrysler - not run in a while

Well, rebuilt the carb and put in a new starter. Turned over awesome! However, no start.

I am pretty sure I am not getting any spark. What is the best way to test, or the first place I should start?

Thanks!

Re: 1979 Chrysler - not run in a while

I hope someone else can help you with this. I have been lucky and have never had ignition problems. I would start by testing the plugs for spark. Ground the threads to motor ground. I use a wire wrapped around the threads and tie the other end to a screw on the motor that is grounded. connect the plug wires to the plugs and have someone else hit the starter and watch for the spark. You should do this in a dark room. Also can you post a picture of your Terminal strip? You might want to think about starting a new thread. This one is getting pretty long and it is a new topic.

Wouldnt hurt to do a compression test while you are doing this. You can get one for 30 bucks at Sears or any automotive parts dealer.

Thanks Euro. You are correct, I should prob start a new thread. I have a compression tester also, I bought it for my other boat. Haven't used it, but I have it!

By terminal strip you mean in the engine, aft of my starter right?
