1979 Johnson 70 tilt/trim down adjustment question

I have a 1979 Johnson 70 with power tilt/trim. When it's trimmed all the way down, there are 2 rods that touch the motor and stop it from going any further. The motor then sits a few degrees up in relation to the boat, and contributes to proposing. I am not familiar with power tilt/trims. Should these rods be going back in the cylinders, or is there a way to adjust them so I can trim down further? Thanks..

beny, there is a rod that goes through some holes on the motor next to the transom, make sure the rod is in the closest hole towards the transom or your trim is not going to give you the whole range. I hope this helps

Are you talking about the two trim rams on either side of the tilt ram? If so then yes, they should retract all the way in.
There is a large flat headed screw on the right side of the hydraulic reservior accessible through the transom bracket.(there is a c clip in there also)
If you unscrew that the motor should release and come down. (careful, fluid might come squirting out) Tighten the screw back up and check and fill with clean tilt/trim fluid(from the fill screw on the front of the reservior).
See if that helps.

Dave

Re: 1979 Johnson 70 tilt/trim down adjustment question

I learned something. There is no trim pin causing it to stop. The trim rams that would touch the motor - I thought stopped it. It turns out they just slow it down and I am able to trim it all the way down. I really need a book. I was looking to top off the fluid and am not sure where to fill it. On the left-side cylinder, there is a smaller long screw on the top side; I took it out and it was dry. There are also screws on the front side of both cylinders that face the rear towards the top. Any ideas where to fill it? Thanks in advance...

benyshep

You don't need a book for this one. That is the way it works. You do not need the pin with the Tilt and Trim. It is controled by the center tilt ram and the 2 smaller trims rams. It's doing just what it's supposed to be doing. If the trim rams go all the way in flush, it's fine. Normally, with the motor raised and looking from the back of the motor, the right cylinder has a large slotted screw toward the top, but on the back side of the cylinder, that you would remove to check the fluid. It should be filled to the top of the screw hole. I'm basing this on a newer motor, though. It may be a little different than yours. The screw is a short one. (1/2" or so)
