Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Been running around picking up pieces parts. Stopped by engine dealer and there is a big box just came in whith my name on it. Oh baby.

Receipts and boxes arent worth pics.

Making headway though.

I am over the funk and certainly no reason to feel bad about 70's. I do have to say though that after watching your resto for some time now I am on to your code words. "Irrigation" = how long you hold that tap open on cold German beer.

Too funny SG, yeah I confess your right about the tap. Although natures irrigation turned on here yesterday, hindering my flotation foaming efforts.

OK, so the suspense and you got your new motor in that box with your name on it right? The pieces and parts too. Finally someone besides me is spending money!

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Some progress and some sunshine.

Yah Water, acting a bit like a kid with the hinting stuff, just should have shut up till pics. Bottom line is engine came in, went with a 25 hp Evinrude ETEC, with t&t. Will suit me well for where I will fish. Will have pics down the road a bit.

So, got the deck pieces trimmed up a bit, some router work on a few edges and sanding. All ready for the epoxy and paint.

I've been running the boat back and forth from storage with no working trailer lights so with warm day time to get donw and these old hands and knees and squirm like a work for a bit. The weather sure makes it easier to accomplish.

Got er done. Weather forecast is 4 to 5 days of rain and mid 50's coming up so hoping to get all epoxy and paint done on deck.

No great pics, just ran new harness, tinned some leads, shrunk wrapped the connections, solid and good to go.

Wow someone rolled out the red carpet for you! Hey glad to hear you went with the Rude for your SN.

I have a suggestion for your trailer, move the winch stand back to where the stern is even with the bunks sticking out the back. Will help you when backing too I suppose but mainly add more support to the hull.

Streetgang you asked on my build thread if I found any more cracks, I have. I have the obvious cracks on the same place as you on the outer rib rivets on the 6th and 7th rib from the stern port side. After I got it flipped and ground off the paint and goop around the problem areas I've discovered small cracks at ribs 5 and 8 at the same rivet points. I also ground off the crude on the starboard side and found tiny cracks at the outer rivet points of ribs 6 and 7.

Thanks for the observation and heads up. About the trailer not the red carpet, cause there wasnt one.

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

OK, been out of the loop for awhile.

Since weather hasnt been co-operating I have been itching to do some epoxying on the deck pieces parts. I've horsed around with the small tubes and stuff but not with these big cans, pumps, mixing, chemical / mechanical bonding.....

So dragged a few of the smaller pieces down into basement and gave it the first shot. OK results, got the feel for it but probably should have been warmer. Had a heater but wasnt quite enough.

Week ago temperature soared and dragged all pieces parts outside into the sun and gave it a shot. Yikes, things went a bit quicker but did manage to get 2 coats on one side plus the edges.

Well, that was exciting but short lived. More cooler temps and rain but you all know the drill.

My resto buddy came into town and gave me a hand cutting up some foam and we got a section knocked out the other day. Just dry fitting for now as still have inside and outside hull work to do when weather improves.

My jig saw and hacksaw blade did good but the yard still has a blueish tint to it. No worries, it will rain.

Guess I am going to do a third coat of epoxy on bottom so had to do some sanding. Set up in garage.

Looking in:

Looking out:

guess that would be rain out there eh...

It feels good to make some progress though.

Hey SG looks like your starting to get underway on the rebuild now that the weather has broke. Grass is green, trees are blooming. Spring is there finally but with rain in tow. That foam isn't much fun and it looks like you have to make 3 pieces to fit across, that's 1/3 more cutting than I had to do.

Looking good, keep pushing on!

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Pretty good few days.

Epoxy city, got 3 coats bottom of 2 coats top of 7 pieces. Also somehow got it in my stash and had to cut it out.....not sure how that happened, maybe a good sneeze from all the pollen flying around.

No pics to post cause every one I took looks just like the one up above.

More power to the glass boyz but just can fathom it......

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Got another bay done fitting in the foam. Goes good when able bodied (somewhat able, he is retired) assistant measures and fits whilst I cut. I know a wide variety of tools and inventions have come into play but my jig saw works pretty good.

Able bodied assistant:

Had this odd ball shape piece of foam and thought it might look like an outline of a State, but that didnt work well.

Then I thought maybe a Province, from GWN......nahhhhh.

So either a piece of art or just an oddball piece of foam.

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Ever since saw Grandads resto with his wonderful repair of the crack in hull, its been bugging me because I think he resolved cause was a bunch of missing rivets on bulkheads or stringers cant remember which.

So did some closer inspection and found 1 bulk head with 2 rivets gone and 2 others with 1 rivet gone. Further found a lot of the others were loose. Just a heads up as it would be a shame to get all the old foam out, hull / bildge cleaned and not find the missing rivets let alone some small cracks.

Will take some pics when do the repair but here are a few with missing rivets:

another:

and another with 2 gone:

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

After I got the Nymph home and luckily found Iboats, then read about the waterlogged foam, then discovered the beauty word "limber hole" I became very depressed to learn my boat design apparently doesnt have limber holes. So water has to rise up over the rib, but since it was foamed solid guess they resolved didnt need them.

As Jig always says, if boat is covered, drain removed, nose up, maintained it's all good.

But I am am going to overeact and take the position that water is going to get in there and I want a clear shot to the bilge.

All well and good but the bulkheads are so deep water can hardly get under them let alone over the rib. Geez oh man.

Since those rivets are bad will just take them off and open them up a bit and then think I'll put some SS srews and nuts all way through the ribs to hold em in place.

Might be hard to see but very little clearance for the H2O to get back, Loretta.

Thats enough for now. Hope somebody caught some fishes! The shop Super at work said his pals killed some walleye in just 8' of water along shoreline of Lake Erie.

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Looks like some easy fixes with blind rivets, I think that happens when the decks become spongy and allow too much hull flex. Oh and my SN has no limber holes either... Through the hull and on structure I used SS blind rivets with a large flange. Did I miss how to seal up those knee brace / bottom cracks?

Resto helpers are a precious commodity, besides being a huge help, they give you someone to blame when something doesn't come out right! :eyebrows:

Keep up the good work!

Fell behind a bit. Camera pblm, then annual fish trip to GWN and some non boat projects.

So started yanking the bulkheads:

While in there killing the knees, might as well drill out the rivets and put in the stop crack holes:

While bulkheads are out going to open them up a bit so H20 flows more freely:

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

So, then we come up on our annual fish trip north. This is our 5th year but first time in May, mid May and of course you take what you get with weather at this time of year. Wonderful camp on an island, we haul in our own food but they provide us boats, cabin, bait.

About 500 miles north of Toronto, Lady Evelyn Lake, cant drive in so not very crowded and 35 miles of shoreline.

Wonderful weather going in, here is my fish bud on first few days, tshirt:

This is me middle of week, dressed just a bit warmer, longjohns on:

And of course no one saw this coming for the last few days:

And of course day we leave back to clear skys and 70's.

Fishing was not good and there was absolutely nothing in the belly's of the fish we did catch.
