Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

I think it is official, the line has been crossed between demo and build. Not a great deal but laid up the transom today, or more specifically just glued er up.

Seems there is a common theme running throughout Iboat resto's which is keep making those steps. Frankly, that is a good part of why I am here is to have the bump when needed.

I was fortunate to have 3 ex Army Rangers working for me awhile back and while extreme it remains the same. Their training was always designed to see who said enough and who kept making the next step.

One more sidebar and enough. When I had the nice adventure of finding the hardwood lumber yard stuck out in a rural setting in Northwest Ohio, I would like to pass on that you all may find some good deals on higher end lumber. My example is decided to go with marine grade ply for transom and decking. When my time came to be assisted, the gent asked what I was working on and when he realized was going to use up every inch of the sheet and it was for the transom he offered me a "damaged" piece at a discount.

This was extent of damage, towards one corner:

transwddamage.jpg

It was also the type of yard that you could walk around, sample the lumber, look through the scraps so truely an enjoyable time and save a few bucks.

OK,

hauled the pieces downstairs and set up for glueing:

Scrounge up clamps, get supplies in order.

transclmp.jpg

Using Titebond III so start lathering it on.

transglue.jpg

Clamped up, ready for some screws.

transscrew.jpg

Rest easy my beauty. The sharp saw is awaiting.

Ramblings end here. :blah:

That is some nice looking ply you found, no loose knots and small voids. I was at the home depot looking around last weekend and found some hardwood maple 3/4 ply with no knots and small voids, they had the unit out with a $38 a sheet price tag. I was planning on using resin and mat to glue the pieces together and then coat the finished transom with more resin, ending with nice a coat of paint. Looks easier to use some gorilla glue tho...

Nice score on the ply.. and, yes, you are right, baby steps and some motivation from the iboats gang cheering you along...

Keep at it... It will start coming together before you know it.

Not a good idea, the maple veneer is indoor grade and isn't made with waterproof glue.

MDO would be a much better material.

Street: Nice looking 'damaged' plywood.... How did you ever manage? Turned out great! I'm a big fan of the TB3! Easy to work w/, plenty of time for adjustments, and easy cleanup!

WaterMan: I agree w/ Jig.... But if you're rehab'ing a boat, start a thread, so we'll know what you're working on & what you're working with....

Resin & mat? Poly resin or epoxy? Make sure the mat's compatible w/ epoxy, if that's what you're using. If you're finishing the transom w/ poly resin you need use glass too before you paint it. If you're using epoxy, you're good.
Having a rehab thread would help us know which you may be talking about using ;)

SG, transom wood looks great all clamped up and nowhere to go....

Hint for drilling stainless...slow your bit down on rpm...with a little more pressure then you think you needs...but with thin material..kinda hard to get it just right without it breaking through and screwing the drill bit through the hole...slowing it down will produce less heat..and pilot holes if going with a larger diameter hole...just my 2 cents..

Keep it going, lookig good!

Not the plywood I would use but... If you prep it, glass it properly and maintain it well, it'll last a decade or so. Maybe longer. If it gets wet it will go bad very quickly since it's NOT exterior grade.

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

When the weather breaks I will get started on my 1978 SN SS 160 rehab but for now I'm watching listening and learning. Also I'm buying parts and stock piling them in the garage. (seats, seals, thru hulls, decals etc... but no wood yet) I'm not going to use the maple since it's for interior use, it was the only ply tho at the HD which looked as good as SG's ply. Not sure where to get the MDO ply around my clearing in the sticks since HD ran the mom and pops out of the lumber business.

Yes I've been here reading about the epoxy use for the transoms, my vocabulary in the fiberglass work is limited.

Thanks to all for speaking up and not letting a costly mistake be made.

Troop, thank you for heads up. Perhaps you will get a kick out of this. My Dad always said "the truth will set you free" so was walking thru the shop the other day and dawns on me (cause I'm stareing at it) we have an ironworker which has been around for oh say last 20 years or so with every common punch there is. Shop Super sees me fixated and asks if everythings OK. I tell him yup, my friend, just livin the dream !

Think I'll just punch those holes out this time around.

Yikes Wood, gave me a sit back in the chair there. Then I realized you were speaking of wood for H2O Man. I was feelin good about my score on the ply and when I see your well respected stop by and then the comment had me spinning.

Ah, its good for the circulation.

Phew.

H2O Man, this is another good reason with the bad weather and all you should start your thread. Start out slow, I'd be pleased to help and then you will really be in the trap !

It's all good.

Sorry SG, I'm not trying to Shanghai your thread or cast a dark dim witted cloud on your good work so I will pipe down. I will take the advice about my own thread where I can porpoise, cavitate, capsize and get keel hauled.

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Well it is time to get this back in gear a bit.

Need to cut trams to fit. Some good compund angles there but my old 731 Rockwell should still be up to the task.

I will have to kick SWMBO's car out of garage but after Waterman struggle and then successfully get the buick out, i am up to this.

The marine grade ply is nice stuff, havent seen a void on any edge.

newtrans2.jpg

After measuring a few more times than twice and using some straightedges and going slow, it is done.

newtrans4.jpg

Am not going to drill it out until can dry fit into boat which is still in storage.

Got to get some of the other wood parts fitted up and cut so can be ready for epoxy coating with warmer weather.

Feeling good, take a peak outside and geez oh man............:tsk:

Look like photobuck is going to force everyone to newer style set up eh.

Beauty day today, 65.

Took some old deck and platform templates to boat to verify fit up. Boat is stored about 1/10 mile from edge of Lake Erie so went on down for a look see at the big water. There is a very samll park with some steps down to shore. there is a small stream along side the steps drains into lake.

If you look in bottom left of pic there is a dark cloud in water.....

Since am changing to a tiller have been looking at some motors and Evinrude ETEC sure looks to have a step up on competition. The more I look the more I like what they are doing and on top of it all making them in WI.

They have this special going that if delivery taken by end of March the warranty for the engine I am looking at 25 hp will get an extended 3 yr warranty on top of the basic 3yr.

Oh boy, guess I'm going to do it. Better warm up, then epoxy coat and get this hull ready.

Hey SG, I see the weather there is still on the cold side but you have a garage with some portable heat! What I did was put the boat inside the garage and then hit the lock out on the remote opener! LOL

Nice cutout job on the transom ply, I decided to primer, paint and spar mine which is way above and beyond what the factory does. What I did was dry fit my transom and then marked all the holes. Then I removed it and did all the drilling before the sealing up job.

Those are some awesome photos of the lake. All those fish are probably some sort of sucker or scrap fish no doubt thinking about the spawn. Rip into that SN hull repair and get caught up with mine.

Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Bit of an update:

This weather sucks canal water. Forecast for next 5 days, rain turning to sleet turning to ice, turning to snow.

Went ahead and ordered the new ETEC outboard. Just a bit lighter in the shorts now.

Need to get last order in for ply so did some measuring up with remainder of templates and from original notes taken when the template was complete mush. Hmmm need 5 more full sheets, but did the math 3 times so will p/u 5/8" this week if weather allows.

Wish I would have taken better pics when bought boat. Ended up laying the pieces parts together on floor to measure up for ply. Thought I heard a vrooom noise but it's too early for that.

Picking up epoxy and misc accessories and will be waiting for that upcoming nice day. Need to get all ply cut and ready to go.

Few misc pics:

Surprised that beast isn't sucking up all the heat but you might want to toss that feline out of your work area. Claw sharpening, floating fur and their own brand of spray painting makes for frustration later on when details matter.
