115 1979 eninge runs rough at low speed occasionally skipping & sputters out unless i give it more gas. i have replaced thermostats and replaced fuel line. when running full throttle or 3/4 the engine runs fine. when i slowed up to go under 5 mph i smelled gas and then engine sputted out. i also noticed small gas leakage when i tilt engine up trickles out of gear/throttle cable holes. is it normal for gas to trickle out when engine is titled? Should i spray carb cleaner or can that be not such a good thing to do.

A certian amout of gas may normally spill or be sputtered out of the carbs while running or tilted for transport. If it's actually flooding out at or near idle, You'lle have to get in there and clean the needle seats.

Those motors may sometimes respond very well to a decarb treatment.

It is also possible a float needle is not seating and flooding a carb out. Installing new carb kits might be what you need.

My 1985 90HP V4 did something similar until I found one of the coil trigger wires was completely corroded on the inside. It would run great at top end but slowing or idleing caused a sputter and would die sometimes. Good luck Toms River, I spent many of my younger years in Seaside Heights running the boardwalk.
