i just broke down the motor and re did all the seals, and the carb. bought 2 new spark plugs and motor runs great. BUT getting it to start is got to be one of the hardest things i have ever done. (and i am married LOL). i have set the needle valve on top of the carb to 1 and 1/4 turns cleaned the ignition coil and have 2 power packs that work fine. lots of spark and i believe lots of fuel. still have to fight with it to start. and i have to use a rope over the flywheel to start it cause i don't have a retractable rip cord or starter motor (which i am looking into as we speak). any ideas why it is so hard to start. please let me know. thanks :)

oh btw can someone give me a parts listing or a link to a site with a starting motor bracket. my engine has a bracket on it, but i dont think it is for the starter. thanks again. :)

i looked it up and see your engine has a plunger type choke system(unless someone changed it around)the plunger isnt working correct if you cant get gas to te cyl as a primer. Can you see or hear gas when you operate it

actually it has a choke instead of a primer. it is what it had when i got it. i cant here or see gas, but i know that when i get it started it will run all day, so i guess the gas supply is not a issue, well only in getting it started maybe. what else would make it hard to start?

Well,I looked at all the 1980 models and they have a different type of primer system. However,if you have a choke ,are you sure the choke plate is totally closing, that causes the vaccum of the engine to draw fuel from the carb giving it a rich supply of gas,Now,another piece of info I just thought of,Im willing to bet, your not getting a good solid pull ,to crank that engine fast and long enough to suck fuel from carb and then allowing it to fire.I have read about problems with emergency rope starters before.Until you get a proper recoil or starter motor, take some mixed fuel and put it in a spray bottle, then give a couple shots into carb before pulling the rope.Bet you have some luck.

i can see the choke plate close all the way no problem. as for not being able to turn the motor fast enough, well you may be right. i have thought of that before, but i thought that 2 or 3 pulls with the choke on would do the same job. i get three wraps of the rope and the motor turns 3 or 4 times to the best of my estimation. i know that the recoil would be better ( and i am praying that i can find a starter and the correct bracket for it) but i don't think that the recoil starter would give me more pulls. i may be wrong. just a thought.
