Yea, just slide the drive shaft back in place.
As for a sealer, my preference is 3M 847 scotch-weld for metal to metal applications. Its a little spendy and you'll probably only find it online.
Also, I have used Permatex Aviation as a gasket sealer and on nuts/bolts. The Super High Tack 97 may work as well, but I never used it before.

edit: Oh, the easiest way to post pics is to setup a free photo hosting account, like www.photobucket. That way you can upload your pics and post links (image code) here or any other forum.

Is it possible or worth it to change the reed plate and rejet the carb for a little more power? I was thinking if the 40hp model had the same style reed plate I could buy a new one. Guess the tinboat sites already rubbing off. I want to make more compartments now. :)

Re: 1980 35hp Evinrude issues...

Replaced all the seals in the lower unit last night. I left work at 3:30am and was up with my kids at 8am. Ughh can't be doing this much longer. I found some junk plugging a little drain hole on the portside of the lower unit. Looks like there's 2 drain holes on that side and the one that was plugged was for the very front cavity. Makes sense when I pulled the lower unit off there was water and slime in that front cavity. There was a lot of build up on the walls of the intake and other areas. Tried to scrape and scotch brite off as much as I could. I was smart and put a plastic bag over the driveshaft hole, used an old seal and tapped it on so I wouldn't get any debris in the gears. I'll be happy when everything is done and cruising on the lake. I'm not a happy camper about outboardbooks.com right now. The lady told me last Thursday when I ordered my service manual that I would probably have it Friday or Saturday since they're in WI and I'm in MN. I called them this morning and another person said it was on backorder! I'm like wtf?!?! They never said it was backordered when I paid for it last week. I told them I was told I would have had it by last Saturday and I'm in the middle of the rebuild and could really use it. They didn't care since they already had my $70 or whatever it came to. What a joke. All I really want is the torque specs and etc...

Re: 1980 35hp Evinrude issues...

I bought the little canister of the Permatex Aviation gasket sealer. I also bought 2-4-C Marine Lube with Teflon (equivilant to the Triple Guard grease that the seloc manual calls for in seal to seal applications) and I also bought needle bearing assembly grease from the boat shop in town as well. Didn't get anymore parts in the mail today so I might bring the cylinder head, bypass cover, and exhaust covers to work and clean them all up in the parts washer. If I had the water pump kit with the new housing I could put that on and put my lower unit back on but, now it's a waiting game...

Mike,
sorry to hear about the delay. I'm sure things will all come together.
Did the shop say when the block will be ready?
Btw, great pics. You're very organized.

Re: 1980 35hp Evinrude issues...

I'm going to call the shop first thing in the morning. I'm pretty much ready for re-assembly since I've been staying late after work to work on the boat motor parts. Tonight I soaked the carb and cleaned it up like new. Installed the carb kit and adjusted the float according to the Seloc manual. Sanded all of the gasket surfaces on all of the motor pieces. Afterwards I washed them in the parts washer and then pressure washed them with water. So, everything is clean and should paint up really nice now. I even bead blasted and washed the exhaust tube that bolts onto the motor. About 10 minutes before I had to leave for work I got a big box of boat motor parts so I was happy! I have another box of parts coming as well but, this one will get me by for awhile with how many seals, o-rings, gaskets, and bearings are in there lol! Oh and the new water pump kit was in there too. People must not buy too many needle bearings for that type of motor since the packages looked like they were 30 years old lmao! I'm really not that organized, just when I'm working on stuff like this. Just makes everything easier to put back together. I'm hoping the machine shop bored it out and already ordered piston kits... That way there isn't much more down time.

Sounds like you're having fun. I can't wait to see her run.

Anyway, you're not missing out on fishing, unless you fish at night. The days have been way too hot for me. I haven't been out in weeks.

I'm reassembling everything now and I'm tired! It's way too hot out! I have the new pistons, rings, and misc bearings installed. I have the crankcase assembled and sealed up. Need to install the lower crankcase seal housing, exhaust cover, bypass cover, reeds/intake, cylinder head, and probably some more stuff. I have been taking pictures during the reassembly. I did buy the Evinrude paint for the motor so, I'm going to paint everything up nice again. Time for a beer or three lol.

Re: 1980 35hp Evinrude issues...

Thanks guys for the tips! I uploaded a lot more pictures of the rebuilding/assembly process on my photobucket. I have the lower unit on now and already sprayed the lower cowl, exhaust housing, brackets, and lower unit with clear coat. I didn't get the powerhead put on but that shouldn't take long. I forgot to add a decal on the bottom of the exhaust housing so I have to respray the clear coat which isn't a big deal but, I didn't want to make anymore mistakes tonight I called it quits.

It looks like you took your time and did a great job. :) Thanks for sharing the pics. That's a good detailed collection for future reference. Did you order your new wiring harness yet? I was gonna suggest boats dot net.

Yep I have everything already. I can't remember where I got it from but it's a CDI brand for $120 or so. I did have a tool to remove the pin from the connector. And I already got the new one pushed through and crimped so it won't pull back out. I'm very anxious to get this tested. Just taking longer since I can't work on it in the day during the week.
