Go to an Evinrude dlr and get the correct water deflectors for your mtr. Don't just try and use any kind of hose.

Re: 1980 85hp Johnson - Water in Plug?

New water dams came in yesterday ... I installed two new ones in cyl 1 and 3
..

Just waiting for the rest of the parts to arrive and I'll be ready to put the starboard side back together again.

Since it doesn't seem to be any issues with Port side I may just leave it alone until after our season here ..

Plans are to replace all thermostate components since I do not know much about previous maintenance of this engine .. Noticed a slight oil leak from the lower unit seal today ... Which was a bit odd.. didn't have a leak before..

During our winter, I'll take the Port side down and replace the water dams and head gasket then break down the lower unit water pump and oil seal for good measure for next season.

Spoke to a boat shop tech yesterday and gave me some advice about oil gas mixtures and wanted to bounce this off of you guys ..
In the 70's/80's gas was apparently of better quality .. had lead and higher octane rating... He recommended my oil mixture to be 1 pint of twc to 5 gallons verses 6 gallon mix. This way there was a better form of lubrication to the engine. Any Thoughts?

It probably will do no harm to run 40:1, but you are changing the mix from the factory recommendation if you do. It would be better to run at 50:1 with a better TC-W3 oil, especially synthetic TC-W3 oil, so that you don't get so much residue. If you want to have a cleaner running engine, use a carbon treatment additive as well.

A lot of members of this forum use Pennzoil full synthetic; it works well and is biodegradable according to the company. Shell owns Pennzoil and has other synthetic products under other names.

Just as a follow-up ....

New head gasket is on ...

When installing the head one of the bolts stripped out .. SO! down to the autoparts store I went to purchase helicoil set ...

Went back home drilled out the stripped threads and install the new helicoil using Loctite Red for perm fit ...

Re-installed the head with new gasket and torqued the bolts to 18lbs...

Removed the thermostate cover and removed old gaskets and thermostates .. One of the thermostats had looks like parts of an O-ring against the thermostate.

Cleaned out the areas then replaced relieve valves, springs and thermostates gaskets etc ... Looks like this was never changed out ...

Once completed ... installed the ole water cup on and fired the engine up! ...
OH WHAT A DIFFERENCE! ... YUP! this ole girl sounds good idling now than before and almost a one key turn start... Before I worked the starter pretty hard to get it started...

Ran the unit for about 10 minutes to warm up ... checked both sides "port" and "starbord" with a temp guage... Seems to be fairly even accross the engine.... However, the real test will be when I take her out in the water this weekend to do a final check...

After the engine run to normal operating temp ... Allowed the engine to cool and hit the head bolts with a torque wrench as a final check of torque ...

Will check the head bolts one more time after the weekend .. Then pull plugs and check electrodes and gap setting as my final.

Then one final compression test to boot ..

Other than that! .. Thanks for all who responded to my issue...
