Re: 1980 85hp Johnson - Water in Plug?
Just as a follow-up ....
New head gasket is on ...
When installing the head one of the bolts stripped out .. SO! down to the autoparts store I went to purchase helicoil set ...
Went back home drilled out the stripped threads and install the new helicoil using Loctite Red for perm fit ...
Re-installed the head with new gasket and torqued the bolts to 18lbs...
Removed the thermostate cover and removed old gaskets and thermostates .. One of the thermostats had looks like parts of an O-ring against the thermostate.
Cleaned out the areas then replaced relieve valves, springs and thermostates gaskets etc ... Looks like this was never changed out ...
Once completed ... installed the ole water cup on and fired the engine up! ...
OH WHAT A DIFFERENCE! ... YUP! this ole girl sounds good idling now than before and almost a one key turn start... Before I worked the starter pretty hard to get it started...
Ran the unit for about 10 minutes to warm up ... checked both sides "port" and "starbord" with a temp guage... Seems to be fairly even accross the engine.... However, the real test will be when I take her out in the water this weekend to do a final check...
After the engine run to normal operating temp ... Allowed the engine to cool and hit the head bolts with a torque wrench as a final check of torque ...
Will check the head bolts one more time after the weekend .. Then pull plugs and check electrodes and gap setting as my final.
Then one final compression test to boot ..
Other than that! .. Thanks for all who responded to my issue...
