Someone stole your rectifier? Must be hardup.

A Merc rectifier for your motor is a standard bridge of 4 diodes. Merc internally connects one of the bridge connections to ground. If you are using an aftermarket rectifier, you simply need to ground the -DC connection. The two AC connections get the yellow stator wires, and the +DC connection gets the red wire.

One more thing, the brown wire drives the tachometer. Connect it to either of the yellow stator wires.

I guess I'm not that smart about electronics, what I've got is a factory 3 lug rectifier, 1 lug marked + on the bottom. I have 2 big red wires coming from the stator, 1 small red wire, and a small brown wire. what wires go where? thanks for your help

Sorry, some of the wire colors I cited were for a 1978 and older Merc IL6.

A 1980 Merc stator for your motor should have 2 yellow wires, a red and a blue wire, and a red/white and a blue/white wire. The yellow wires feed the AC side of the rectifier, the rest feed the switchboxes. The charging wire is red and connects to the + terminal of the rectifier. The tach sender wire is grey and connects to either of the yellow wires.

Not sure if this helps...
