Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Hey Jason, the HB looks real purty sittin' up there. I thought I read on the HB site that through hull xducers didn't work so good on a tinny. At a minimum the temp pick-up isn't functional. Do they have new xducers that work better now?

Once again the Islander is shoved back in the corner. I hope she understands  is only a nap.

Really? Hmmmm. You must be talking about a "shoot through" cuz I'm thinking about an actual "thru hull". Eh?

Yah, I'll keep working on the big girl as I go along here. I just needed to come to terms that I don't have the time to actually finish by Easter Vacation ya know:blue:

Uhhhh yeah, if it's a shoot through hull transducer (in hull)... it aint a gonna work on a tinny. If it's a through hull mount it'll work but there are drawbacks there too... from the product description:

They are not recommended for trailered boats as the transducer is not flush with the hull. Plastic Thru-Hull Transducers require that a hole be drilled in the hull and the shaping of a fairing block.

You can knock that thing off when putting your boat on the trailer, then ya gotta nice big hole in your hull to let water in... may be a good way to check/test your floatation foam design though.;)

also extra water in the hull helps slow the boat down for best trolling speeds!!

am I helping? :)

One of my transducers sits right behind a strake. Have never had any issues with it.

How about a pic of the location.

Thru hull just sounds like a problem over time, even with your love of 5200.

So, I just took a real quick gander at that transduser again - maybe not so bad actually. I'll take a closer look in the a.m.

A good friend of mine one the Mercury Nationals a few years ago because they had a huge crack in the hull of their Tundra and were sinking,...But because it was very windy they were able to go slow enough to get the fish to bite,..The other boats around them were moving way to fast and couldn't get bit,....lol,....

Still not a good enough reason to have a boat full of water,................

You drilling an actual hole in the bottom of the hull???? GA's right a transducer won't go through metal. Hmmm, if it was me I wouldn't drill thru the hull. Just my nickels worth the advice.

On a less disagreeable note, the bench is straight pimp. I will steal all designs if I ever need it.:joyous:

Looks good,
Don

That bench is bangin' man. Excellent multifunctional design.

I looked into an alumaducer transducer early on as I was in the same dilemma. I went with what came with the fishfinder and mounted on starboard with the starboard holes above the waterline and so far so good. The alumaducer claimed to "Shoot directly thru aluminum hulls up to .150" thick!" They were going for about a 100 on ebay a while back but would've liked feedback from someone using one first.

The thru hull would work but i'd like to install it in an easily accessible spot for sure with whatever standard soviet issue epoxy or 5200'ish product there is.

On the transducer, I just kinda went ahead and split the difference between the two chines, the bunk and the engine. I think I should be just fine...

Made the connections, powered up, nice!

I wasn't marking any fish in this spot so I called it a day.:fatigue:

Install looks good J.

Switch that thing over to simulator mode and you'll mark some real nice fish, simulator mode is where I've marked some of my biggest fish!

I was going to suggest one of these in case you ever wanted to add or change things,....Keeps holes through the boat to a minimum,..

Cabela's: Cabela's Transducer Mounting Plates

It looks like you mounted it in the best place,....It's where I would have put it so it must be!!!!,.......

Saginaw Bay is on my bucket list of places to fish,...

Transducer looks great Jas.

Marking Fish? What's that?

I go fishing but there's not a lot of catching. It is getting better, maybe it's the Tin boats.:nod:

Hey Jas, just curious how wide is the walkthrough between your consoles?

I'm thinking about converting my crestliner from side console to dual and using a dead glassers windshield. If i mirror my drivers console i come up with about 11inches of walkway, which seems pretty skinny.

Looks like you found a good home for that transducer should be pretty tuff to mangle it.

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Hey thanks guys! Getting the electronics settled means I'm nearing the end, yah baby! VHF next eh.

Teamster - hollar when you head out this way (need not haul any crappie glassers with ya, we have plenty of real boats over here:heh:)

dmoriarty - what in the world are you doing up at this hour? Only severe boat nerds and auzzies are awake at this time of the day! Can I get ya a cup of coffee? I just made a pot:tea:

So, in between the consoles is 19". Width inside the gunwales is 68" and my consoles are 24" each. 19" is plento o' room. 11" would be a little skinny but I'd say that would be fine. It would be nice to access the bow through that.

I suppose the real question would be if you'd rather have deck space, or rather have the second console. Certainly depends on your major uses eh.

Cheers!

Nice install Jason, other than the radio you must be down to a real short list on this project.
