so the 1708 1 layer on the stringers is common way to do it? What I've read capping is extremely hard with this product

Then a 8oz or 10oz on the (1 layer) on the deck? If I understood your post opps you resin coated both sides of the plywood before you installed the deck?

8 oz minimum on the top side of the deck....that means 2 layers of csm.....and that is where you can use the finishing veil....(the 6oz) this will give you a strong deck that is very durable and will last.....and will also be very smooth and eliminating the need for major sanding to smooth the csm


i also glassed the bottom side of my deck......resin by it self is very brittle and will crack.....thus leading to moisture intrusion......i had lots of csm....so i glassed it.

and a single 1708 wrap on the stringers is standard in boat shops....take the big cloth right to the top and a single layer of csm capping them....when you do the capping....just break the binder in the csm...its easy and glassing will be easy.....we have done several in this manner and they are crazy strong. this is just over a single peice of ply on edge.

I am planning on putting carpet down so being 100% smooth isn't as critical as for a gel coat finish ( I think).

So when you say 8oz = 2 layers of CSM for the deck, are we talking 1.5oz, 2.0oz or a different weight of chopped strand mat just so that I am clear.

So even if I put a light weight layer of any fiberglass would be better than just resin as I am not going for structural for under the deck?

sorry if it seems like I am beating a dead goat but I am been doing alot of reading tonight and everyone seems to do everything a bit different.

As for the stringer I am thinking that I'll go for 1708 on the sides and cap with a 1.5 oz CSM? (like opps recommended)

Also I've looked into epoxy but that stuff is like 3 times the cost. Also I am taking into account that the current set up in my boat lasted 30 years, and I am already doing it to a higher standard so I am comfortable with the poly product. But thank you for the info on epoxy.

two layers of your choice csm and then the finishing veil.....thats the 6 oz woven cloth ( the csm will help stregntnen the thin woven cloth and make a very durable surface for your deck....a thin layer of csm alone will wear thru in a short while even with carpet

yes....any csm no matter how light (.75 oz) will allow the resin to do what it is supposed to....the under deck should be waxed resin...(this means add the wax or "air dry"

remember....this is your boat......you can build it however you want....this is just how we do it at the shop.

No I appreciate all you info - just trying to get everything straight. Last night I spent a bunch of time reading up on the different types of fiberglass and you combo makes sense - I should of done more research before I talked to the fiberglass supplier so that I knew if what they recommended made sense.

Currently I am getting pricing on the 1.5oz CSM for 2 layers on top of deck, 1 layer on bottom of deck, and 1 layer to cap the stringers, as well as 1708 for the sides of the stringers, 1 layer, and 1 layer of 6oz cloth for the final layer on the deck. People in Alberta don't seem to be aware of the 1708 cloth though - opps I pm you in regards to your previous message yesterday.

Has anyone used pigment in their resin before? I am thinking this would be a fast way to finish the ski locker and bilge (if it works the way the fiberglass supplier says it does) without having to paint afterwards? Does the colour look ok - or will paint/gelcoat give me a better end product?

sorry....i just saw this.

see the battery switch that greg and i made.....we used gellcoat and resin mixed ...looks pretty good.

you can miss a step that way.....but your glassing better be good.

Ok so for bit of an update - been slowly working on the stringers with my brother. We both been busy with work so we didn't get a whole lot done since last up date. Hoping to take a week and a bit off asap so I can glass the stringers and get the deck on.

Bottom Stringers sanded, filled, drain installed, and top has a radius on both sides via router (last Saturday)

Bottom stringers glued in via PL Premium (last Saturday)

Fiberglass supplies arrived today - big thanks to Opps! for all the help

Top stringers glued in via PL Premium tonight

For a note for others doing this in the future - we left part of the original deck on the sides of the boat for reference points as well as it worked awesome for bracing the stringers down while the glue set. (Thanks Colin aka Spinnaker)

Hope to fillet the edges latter this week and prep for fiber glassing asap.

Thats information overload and sponsored by the woodenboat forum, no wonder, because epoxy makes good sense for wooden boats.

Its "stonger " than polyester but polyester is plenty strong enough.

Its kinda like fiberglass is strong enough, but kevlar is stronger and its only 5 times the price of glass cloth.

Ok its been quite a while since i updated this, so hear is what I've been up to in the last 2 months.

First off my bro and I made a last minute vacation to Mexico - it was a nice break from all our projects and busy winter season of work!

After that we bought a project at a Auction, a 2006 Ford with some engine issues we ended up putting a used turbo (with 61,000km) and exhaust back pressure sensor in it which only came to about $700 plus our time - now we are going to see if we can sell it.

Anyways back to the boat, up today we had finished off the stringers and got them glassed in. I was really worried about how all the glassing would go but after the first try I realized it wasn't that bad! Even got the 1708 to cap the stringers after using a router to radius the edges.

Today we got the floor cut, glassed on the bottom and glass the engine cover in some weak areas.

So now we need to glass in the Engine and Bilge mount, Bulk head for the ski locker, the PCV pipe for the heater lines before we can set in the floor, should be getting to it by next week. Also fit and place the high density styro foam (pink stuff). Hope every one is doing well - thanks to everybody who has posted on this site - your info has been much appreciated!

Take what you read on that link with a grain of salt. It's an advertisement for an epoxy distributor. An advertisement created by someone who obviously doesn't understand how to format a web site or run a smear campaign.

Went with polyester resin anyways - the cost of epoxy outweighted the benifits for myself

So got a bit of work done again on the boat.

Modified the heater controls and had an attempt on "ducts" to push the heat to the floor - not sure how this worked out yet.

Glassed in the bulkhead for the ski locker - had a couple of air bubbles but its not structural so it should be fine - all it has to do is a hold a light and prevent the skis from going forward.

And we glassed some supports for the floor where the ski locker lid to be cut is going to be and the floor section for where the gas tank, sub, and heater will sit.

Work on the front floor piece is coming along. Got the "heat duct" made tonight just need to pick up a 4" hole saw for tomorrow night. Think the ducts we made should work - just need to make a plate on the bottom to attach them to the floor and apply another layer of glass to them. My bro made a bunch of brackets to go through the floor/stringers (3 in total) for out heater and hot water shower - them came up great.
