Re: 1981 Chaparral 187 restore

Sounds good, I was also thinking of getting rid of my ski locker too. Most of the time we used it as a trash bin. I was going to make a storage locker out of it, and maybe move my gas tank a little further fwd. My bench seat is going to have the cooler.

Grinding and sanding sucks, but as was stated it gets to be way more fun after that.....or so I hear. Keep up the good work and you will be done before you know it.

I am glad to find out that stringers were bonded to the hull, that makes me feel better about bonding my new ones.

Getting to be an old fat guy makes a ski locker useless for me. So I think the cooler will be nice. I really like the fact that it has a drain already built in and it will be convenient to the captains chair. I'll probably do the rest of the sanding/grinding later today. I will be glad to stand on a deck also. Of course then we plan to flip the boat and start sanding for the new gel coat. I'm sure that will be just as much fun as the grinding.

Father-in-law called today to say the resin was in and the stringers are glued. I haven't seen them yet, but judging by everything else he's ever built they will be better than the originals. Be cool to actually put something back together for a change!!!

I'm jelous, I wish I had a carpenter to work on mine. I also wish I had the time to do more during the week.

I am a lucky guy. Carpentry isn't just a hobby for him either. It's his profession. I've had more time to work on it here lately because of vacation. I go back to work on Monday and he just started a new job so expect a slow down.....

Re: 1981 Chaparral 187 restore

Got a few things done the past few days. We got the main stringers cut to shape and got more sanding and grinding accomplished. The cutting on the stringers was a bit tricky because of the right one being rotted under the deck we left. We did find enough wood to make a joint, but it was a funny cut. I think we'll be bedding stringers in the next few days.

Here's a few pictures.

Out-law cutting stringers.

Will the grinding and itching ever end??

short answer, no! lol

Its looking good so far. I found cutting the new stringers to be the hardest part of my resto so far. I also reccomend grinding EVERYTHING now. Dont think, ill just go back later to get that! Do it now, that way the grinding and itching WILL end. Keep up the good work!

I agree!!!!!!. I have about 1/3 left to grind, and have put it off for two weeks now.

The part that really sux for me is folding my big ***** up in the bottom of the boat to do the grinding. Really and truly the itch doesn't bother me too bad. I actually did it without the suit on the other day, just the goggles and mask and I only itched that evening. Gone the next day. I'd say I have a few more hours at most left to sand and grind, maybe less. It'll be great to walk on a floor again. Of course then we have to flip that bad boy and start sanding for gel coat.....

We put the finishing touches on the stringers today and started building bulkheads. First we cut templates out of some board insulation.

Then we used it cut them out of 1/2 inch marine plywood.

I think they look pretty good. The bulkhead in front is new and will be for the cooler. We plan to glass in some insulation around the sides and top when the time comes. Not sure if we should consider adding some to the bottom also? I'm on fence since the water will likely keep the bottom of the boat cool and we technically don't need to add a layer of glass down there. Opinions are welcome.

We still have the middle bulkhead and rear stringers to cut and then we'll be ready to start bedding them down. Hopefully finish that in the morning if the weather cooperates.

Looking good. It's amazing how tall the stringers are on the deeper V boats.

I guess I hadn't thought about it since this the only boat I've ever worked on. I guess they would have to be otherwise that'd be funky looking deck.

yeah, my center stringer is 16" tall at its deepest point. I wish I could lower mine a little cause I like the feeling of being IN a boat a lot more than ON one. Knaw mean?
