Re: 1981 Chaparral 187 restore

No, I wet each layer out individually. I couldnt imagine trying to wet out 2 layers of 1708 at once. I think you would die before you got half way through!

And what I meant by our "look" is just everyone that is using poly seems to have a stained color to it or greenish hue. Then their PB looks either like poopy(not bad, literally like runny poop) or 70's avacado. OUrs just look different than the vast majority of the others restos. Not good or bad, just unique like your sons do!

Did I mention that I am glad I dont have a baby mama or kids? My wife and I are going to a fertility doc right now but man if we have kids and ever split, I am moving to Russia. I couldnt be part of the ex-games. hahaha

We are wetting down only one layer at a time also. That was a question to another poster. Not sure I would trust that I was getting resin all the way through 3 or more layers.

I imagine the "look" has to do with different types of filler everyone is using. The west systems is white which is what makes it that milky color. Now as far as the consistency of the PB is concerned, more or less filler seems to effect that.

Yep ex-wives are fun for sure. Good luck.

Well here's a picture of the second stringer that the out-law bedded. He did a damn good job on it. I was the mixologist today. At this pace I think we might have all of the stringers and motor mounts bedded by Sunday.

Well my tarp idea needed some adjusting. We had a decent thunderstorm run through last night and I ended up with the rear of the boat full of water. There was also a 95 yard roll of biaxl tape sitting in the boat so it got pretty wet too. So I was bailing water out of the boat this morning in the rain. I've had the roll of tape sitting in front a fan all day. Hopefully we'll have some warm sunshine tomorrow I can sit it out in. Live and learn....

damn, bad buzz man:( Sorry to hear that. However, I cant imagine it being ruined. The only thing I would be scared of is if it absorbed the water and grew. If it just got a little wet no big deal.

Bedding looks awesome, did I mention that you should rent him out?

Well pimpin ain't easy.

He and I do make a great team. I am lucky. Not only do I get along with my in-laws we also enjoy hanging out together. My wife isn't so sure about it sometimes. She's not sure that her dad would let her get rid of me even if she wanted too....

Well everything is bedded. Man what a job. All in all I think we did pretty decent. Now we get to start the glassing.

So here's something funny. I was opening the 2nd gallon resin, since we used the first before everything was bedded. There was just a bit left in the first gallon and I poured it in the new gallon (resin in the resin and hardener in the hardener). So then I told the outlaw that we were all set on the new gallon. I then told him I pre-mixed the old hardener with the resin so we could get ahead on the mixing. You should have seen the look on his face. He was not happy, until he turned to see the sh!t eating grin on my face. Gotta have a little fun every now and then. :D

And I thought I'd add......

Holy crap that epoxy is strong. I'm definitely a believer in West Systems. You'd have to use a stick of dynamite to remove the stringers, bulkheads, and engine mounts. I guess if the hull disintegrates we could always use whats left over for a house foundation....:D

I have found myself thinking the same thing! I also would not steer anyone in the direction of epoxy now that I am using it. I mean the stuff is just WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY overkill. THere is no good reason to be using the stuff on our junk bowriders and fish and skis. I can honestly say I am thinking of going to poly for my deck when the time comes. Epoxy is just TOO strong and expensive to use on a build of our nature. I only used it cause I thought that my grinding skills and non existent glassing skills would be subpar, but alas none of it is that hard and glassing is not a voodoo art that takes years of practice to do a good enough job to get er done.

I am proud of the work that you and pops are doing, way to go! Looks awesome, cant wait to see you fly by me with a deck and then paint:eek:

I'm kind of leaning towards steering folks to it for just some of the reasons you mention. This stuff if bullet proof and having it adding that kind of strength to my hull will make me more confident in the boat. All the guys on this site do a first rate job, but not everyone does. The epoxy I think would be more forgiving because of it's strength. I see no reason why you can't use the poly, but I'd use epoxy if I was going to do this again.

Probably won't be as much progress over the next week of so. The wife says I have to take next weekend off. Oh well, think I'll go fishing. :D

You make a good point, if my idiot neighbor came to me and asked what to use for a repair I wouldnt hesitate to say epoxy all the way. But, when it comes to what we are doing you have to have more than a little skill and determination or you wouldnt ever get far enough into a resto that it would matter whether you used Poly or duct tape! So, if a guy were to grind his hull with anything resembling good work I would not steer him in the direction of epoxy JUST because it works and is really strong...if he were modifying the boat in order to make it weigh less without losing strength I would say epoxy but if he were wanting to do a relatively stock rebuild like we are, no way, it is just wasted money in IMHO:redface: I have kicked myself more than once when I think of the 500 dollars that I will spend throughout my build on resin alone...I couldve done it for half that with equal results, honestly.

SO, anyone asking the question, poly or epoxy, which should I use? I say, when you have done any type of project in the past, be honest, do people look at you with their eyebrows raised and tell you "uhhhh, good, uh, job man, what is it?" If so, use epoxy, if you know you are handy with multiple different types of building materials it poly, hands down.

Brand new to the site and I just picked up the same boat, in the same color but with an outboard. Dont stop posting now, I need to do the same thing you are doing but also replace the transom and bow seats as well. So far I have been following your process with the gutting and just started ripping out the old transom tonight. Great job so far on yours

No breaks allowed! You must post at least 1 update a week with actual work done or you are out of the club! Now go get SOMETHING done and report back. I dont want to see you lose your pimp license:D TImes are tough, you need that income.

Must be a trend with the Chaparral 187 guys, because I have stopped for now too. I have mine gutted, and ready to start putting in the new stringers and floor, then I come across a nice low mileage F250 Diesel FX4 Long Bed Crew Cab, so the Z71 gets traded in and now according to the wife. I have to put the boat on hold for a few months. I had to weigh my options, truck I always wanted or boat that is going to take a long time to complete....well It looks like it will just have to take a little longer....

What are you guys doing for a gas tank? I found a nice plastic one that is a 1/4 inch taller than the one the boat came with for $169. Gonna do a little more shopping before I buy it though.

I'm reusing the one that was in there. It checks out fine. Just out of curiosity where did you find it?
