Re: 1981 Evinrude 115hp multipe problem

I wasn't telling him not to rebuild the carbs. That would be a silly mistake to make on a motor that you have no past history on. But its pretty obvious when he said that he has "puffs" of smoke coming from behind the starter that there is a leak in the case! My leak wasn't even visable and my motor ran like crap. There is one bolt hole on the starter that goes all the way through the crankcase you might want to check and make sure all three bolts are there and tight as well. As soon as the carbs are done I would try and assertain the origin of the smoke behind the starter. Just my two cents.

carbs rebuilt, she started like a champ. ran a few times, no big issues, put it in the water, she died out like before, i had to adjust the idle all the way up to get it to stay running when it was in neutral. i havent ran it again since we got home. It seems to have a miss in it somwhere, i will pull the starter and check behind it. When i got it i did notice that there where no bolts installed on that side of the case next to the starter. I put some in it, but it may be too late for that at this point. Also on the lake in WOT it was only taching about 4k max of 4500. either the tach is incorrect or the motor was not getting wound up all the way, she seemed to run alright, but i think there is more power in this thing. please keep the ideas coming.

Check the intake manifold for leaks. Spray some carb cleaner around the gasket area and see if the engine picks up.

Any chance your miss is a lean sneeze? That's a fuel miss-not a spark issue. That's caused by a restriction in the idle circuits (passageways) in the upper carb bodies. Did you blow out all the carb passages with an aerosol carb cleaner? Visually inspect all the jets?

I rebuilt the carbs and soaked them, blew them out, every orfice, every jet. It runs great at speed, but sucks at idle, it is very slow to accelerate with the cold start lever also, well its kind of intermittent with that, sometimes it rev's up fine, other times it is very very slow to come up. I will try the spray around the intake gasket to see if that does anything. thanks

Check your recuirculating lines as well. These are the small hoses that run from under the carbs back to the block. Make sure they are not slpit anywhere and that they seat tight on the nipples. If they look old or seem brittle I would replace them. Also make sure they are routed properly the two lower ones should run to the bypass covers on the same side they are on and the two tops should T together and go into the main bearing in the dead center of the block.

If you still have not done so, you will need to do your spark test. It will be easier to locate the problem if you use an inductive timing light so that you can "read" the spark over a range of RPM at different loads and engine temperatures.
