I just bought a project motor, after tearing down the lower unit all the gears are destroyed and before I rebuild it I had some questions if you guys can help. What is the part above the shift leave, mine is missing. Could this be the reason the guy before me destroyed the lower end?

That white plastic piece is the neutral switch.----Only allows the starter to crank when motor is in neutral.-----Has nothing to do with what happened to the gears !

Lack of gear lube, water in the gear lube, or impact shells out drive gears. Also if a replacement set was previously installed without proper shimming or matching the gears could have self destructed. Be sure to go through that process if you get far enough to replace the gears.

I don't know your missing part. Marineengine has diagrams for your year motor. Boatinfo may also be able to help.

They are proud of the seals, gears and all the bearings as in big $$$ to buy all new parts--------Inspect the gear housing carefully for any damage.------A parts / donor motor is your best option.

Yeah I priced out the parts. Almost a grand, been looking for a parts motor. The housing is fine. The only viable option is a new lower end though. Cog destroyed, all gears, detent balls ripped thru the brass bushings. Looked like pebbles inside once I pulled the bearing housing. How can you tell if the lower unit from another model is compatible? All the internals are the same but different housing number?

Next step is to evaluate the powerhead COMPLETELY.-------Be a shame to find / repair spend money on a lower unit only to find that powerhead is junk too.---I am going to be blunt and say that experience helps in these interchangeability questions.-----It can not be explained to you in 2 minutes ----Sorry.

Once you know it’s a runner, call Timsoutboard.com with your model number and ask about a replacement used gearcase. It will certainly be MUCH less expensive than ordering new parts..

Found a serviceable lower end, 40 bucks!

Now I need to know if the missing shifter detent was the reason the gears got fried

I do not believe those parts on the side of the block are the shift DETENT parts !!----They are the shift interlock bits.------May allow the motor to be shifted in or out of gear at too high an RPM.----It also depends on what type of throttle control was used.----Single lever or dual lever.----Those missing parts suggest to me that there are issues with the powerhead.----Running poorly and hence the removal of those parts !!

What year is it?? Looks mid 80's ish but hard to tell....all these 25's and 35's of this era (79-89) are pretty much the same motors minus a few updated parts like the midsections, gearshift etc....easy to work on and lots of cheap parts avail. With little maintnance theyre about bulletproof and very reliable....pre 90 omcs imo are the best there is in the 5-40HP RANGE

The biggest nightmare I dealt with when I rebuilt my lower was the detent balls. Made a tool to hold them in place. You might want to do the same.

see if you can use the three cog gears as a upgrade. The shift dog engages the cog.
