1981 Silverline restoration 1st question

Hi Iboaters,

I am embarking on my first boat restoration project, a 1981 Silverline. We have removed the deck, stringers, and foam and are now ready to rebuild. During the demo we used extreme caution and all due diligences to make sure we did not cut through the hull??eh but we did anyway. We have a two inch long 1/8 inch gash trough the hull at one of the stringers.

That brings me to my first question. What special considerations do we need to consider given that the gash is where the stringer goes? I am inclined to put a couple layers of glass over the gash but I think that might be too much bulk in the groove we are going to put the new stringer in. what do you think, glass it or put in peanut butter with chop strand and then the stringer? I am also thinking it would be good to force some PB through the gash, let it set then sand it down smooth.

Thanks in advance for your advice

Re: 1981 Silverline restoration 1st question

My hull gash was partially where the deck went. I had to grind some material away so when I repaired the gash it wasn't too bulky. My process was fill with peanut butter, glass two layers of 1708 over the gash. One 4" larger than the gash one 7-8", then grind and add a couple layers of csm on the outside.

I don't imagine the two layers of 1708 will give a lump too large to work around. You can always adjust the stringer a little by sanding above that area to match it.

Welcome to the iboats dry dock

Nearly everyone cuts thru the deck. Post some pix of your boat.

Not sure I follow the groove you're putting the stringer into:

You'll want to grind the existing stringer & bulkhead glass smooth down to good glass. Leaving some portion of the existing fiberglass and trying to set new stringers into it isn't a good plan. Pix would help with exactly what you're talking about doing, grooves & etc.

I will post some pics but it might be a day or two until I can but yes the groves I am talking about are about a 1/4 inch tab of the old stringer glass. I thought it would be a reasonable guide for the new stringers and I am concerned with grinding through the hull given that I have already done it once!

thanks, Stalmon

Okay, I have some pics but I think I've decided to do a bit grinding and patch the gash with two layers of cloth.

hull gash interior.jpghull gash exterior 2 inch.jpg

the firs pic is where we took the stringer out and cut through the hull, I have ground that down more since. the second is just the gash from the outside of the hull.

thanks again, Stalmon

Re: 1981 Silverline restoration 1st question

Just put some tape on the outside of the hull then install the stringer with PB bedding. The PB will fill the cut on the inside. On the outside, grind it down and feather it then lay a couple of layers of CSM.

Okay, thanks,

that make sense, to do it right repair the gash both inside and out.
