OH...so the center is Higher than the rest not lower. Hmmm that's weird. Yeah before I made another wood one I think I'd make a cardboard one to make sure.

Ok, my paint skills are horrid but this may help to better explain the problem.

The boards running from side to side are to check deck height sitting on the stringers.

The diagram is attached:

Perplexing problem. Your house drawing adds clarity, but many pictures will help here.

What makes you certain this is the correct height position on the bow and stern to be the a reference for the center? What I am getting at here is perhaps the entire deck is intended to be 1" lower than you are currently assuming.

Or.....if you took an inch off the top of your stringers so the deck reaches out appropriately in the center, would the bow area deck space be acceptable?

It wouldn't be lower because the outer edges of the deck rests on the side. Its how the old one did anyways.

Tried taking a little off the top of the stringers, all that does is make it good in the middle and low at the bow and stern.

Im thinking the solution may be to either plane a little off the top in the middle, or do the stringer in 2 pieces. It will get done some way, just trying to find the best solution that will last.

If you own a belt sander or could borrow one, I'd recommend sanding the stringer in the middle and running a board diagonally from front corner to rear corner to be able to establish the height of the deck. Once known you can either sand or cut the stringer to the required height. Have you placed a straghtedge on the outside bottom of the hull to ensure it's not bowed up? Or along the outer edge of the original deck line to ensure it's straight and level? I just can't see how this is happening unless the outer deck line has a bow in it.

It wouldn't be lower because the outer edges of the deck rests on the side. Its how the old one did anyways.

Lets explore that point. What I am proposing is this; If you lower the stringers, the place where the decking "rests on the side" lowers as well. You end up with a smaller deck area. And I am wondering if that is OK for you.

Put another way;

Imagine lowering the stringers as draining a lake; the area of the lake (deck surface) gets smaller as you lower the water (the stringer height), and the shore line (the line where the deck meets the hull) keeps encroaching in to the center as you go down, ultimatly approaching the keel. If you were to raise the stringers you would be flooding the lake and expanding the shoreline.

So if you lower the "lake" by one inch, is the new shoreline of the lake at the bow and stern unacceptable?

Well I'm still working on it, almost have it done. Should be finished and sea worthy by Friday. Will worry about cosmetics over the winter.

Some Grinding:

I ended up getting my stringers sorted out and glassed in, turns out I was just over thinking it. I'm never going to get everything perfect on a 31 year old boat.

Heres a picture of how the stringers turned out:

The above picture was taken about a week ago when I was leak testing the hull. I've already put in the deck and have most of the glassing done at this point. Will post a picture when its all done.

Wow great thread. New to the forum an I just got a 1986 dyna trak 180 with rotten stringers. Gonna attack the job in a few months. One question is would it hurt the hull or boat in any way if I were to take the boat out fishing? I mean with the trolling motor or even slow with te gas motor?

You know, I'm not 100% sure what the model is. There is nothing on the boat that tells me.

Looking on this website, there are a few possibility's as to what it might be but I have no solid way to say because I cant find pictures of the different models.

Maybe someone here that is familiar with ebbtides could chime in, Id like to know also.

Just a little update, the boat is done. Just need to finish the interior. I've had it out alot since I got the floor in. Its so nice not to have a wave move the floor everytime you go over one.

I would be very careful taking out a boat that you know is rotten. It may be good if you're going slow and not stressing the hull alot.

I ended up taking mine out when I shouldn't of at first and the hull was beginning to crack in places because it was not structurally sound. It ended up costing me more time & money in the long run to fix the cracks. I had new boat owner syndrome, blissfully ignorant. :)
