Hello all. I just picked up a 1982 evinrude 9.9 hp.
Instead of the usual cam follower and wheel there is a retangular post ( not round and missing wheel ).
Has anybody seen this before? I will try to upload a picture shortly.

Yep. My 4hp and six 6hp have one. All diagrams I have seen have one. 9.9 and 15hp thru the years.
I have not yet tried the motor on the water. Ill see how if performs and if all is good I'll keep it this way for a while. My concern is swapping out for the correct follower will mess up the timing. Thinking if its not broke dont fix it.

That's interesting. It looks like it's improvised, but think it might work. Tried it yet?

(btw, want to be sure the impeller is fresh if firing it up for the first time. If in doubt, replace it first.)

Flyingscott. In the 2nd picture you can see its not a round post without the wheel . Its a definate rectangle with rounded sides and made that way. I guess over the years it got added from another brand of motor or such to make do.
Oldboat1. Works great in the bucket. Need to water test asap on my 15'4" Gheenoe highsider. Will report back.
Judging by the wear on it its been this way for a while and working just fine.

The diagram below shows what should be there.

It's difficult to believe that the carb could possibly be adjusted to sync correctly with the ignition without the roller. Unless someone has made some other gahstly bodge

Vic.S. Thanks. Yes I realize what should be there. I can go ahead and swap out with the roller of my 4hp or 6hp. The question was if someone knew why it was this way. There is a lot of wear on the follower as you can see in the picture and that ammount of wear indicates that this motor ran this way for a very long time. If it didnt run the wear would not be there.
So the question is do I run it this weekend as is and see ( knowing it has ran this way for years ) or replace with the correct follower and risk it not running at all.

So the follower and wheel on my 94 4hp are the exact
same parts numbers as the 82 9.9hp. Now i just need to work out how to set the cam wheel. Have a manual on the way from ebay.

Honestly, the existing one might work just fine. The wheel can have a little slop in it, and you end up spending too much time trying to get it juuuust right. I can't place the motor it would have been use on (maybe a one of a kind).

Oldboat1. Yes. I think im just going to test run it in the water as is and see. I can always put the correct linkage on later.

if the current linkage set up allows the throttle plate to be exactly horizontal in the carb throat when you're in fwd gear at wot....you should be good to go for the weekend

Thank you gents! It looks like they just replaced it with an older follower then. I hope its just the linkage and not a whole 6hp carb. Lol.

If it's running okay, use it. Anyway now you know what you have.

Finally took the gheenoe out today. Engine ran great right up to the point that it had fuel starvation. Ran it
for about 45 mins then would only run at idle.
Limped back to the dock and when i got home i pulled the carb and in the process of removing the pull start mechanism broke the red plastic starter pawl.
Decided to put the correct follower assebly on it off my 92 4.5.
So yes it worked just fine. I should prob start another thread for this but now I am wondering if running it with a broken starter pawl is ok? Yes it starts and runs.
