I posted at the beginning of summer about a AMF crestliner i was going to buy for $500 i ended up not buying it. The person that was selling the boat was my uncle, he called me last week and said if i want it i can have it. He just wanted it off his yard before winter.

Its been setting for 3-5 years it ran great before he parked it but it hasnt been started in a few years. the boat feels like fiberglass but through a hole in the floor you can tell that stingers are aluminum, which i believe makes replacing the deck alot easier and alot less work? if im wrong please correct me. The transom feels strong and sturdy. I know i will have to replace the deck and recarpet it. The seats are usable but i might replace depending how much it takes me to get the boat going. im not wanting to fully restore it to pristine condition. I just want to get it to were its safe and runs good.

I know the deck needs replaced and the motor will need work. it might need steering work, when we turn the steering wheel the motor doesnt turn. my uncles grandchilden played in the boat some and if they turned the wheel, is it possible it could have damaged the steering? i cant work on the boat until spring time as i dont got a garage and itll be snowing within a month or so here in indiana.

Im going to tarp the boat really good, im pretty sure it hasnt been winterized the past couple of years. Should i do anything to it to winterize it other than tarp it?

Id say the seats are probably salvageable for a while, clean them up good and you could even recolor them with a product like

325_b_medium.jpg

of course that is assuming they are not torn , in the pics they looks OK just weathered/stained.

if you know your going to have to replace floor, Tear it up and give us some pictures to look at of the structure underneath, that would make things easier if it is aluminum stringers for sure. Core check your transom, drill some test holes from the inside, without going deep enough to break outer skin, if wood comes out dry and white, seal the holes and forget it, if it comes out wet then replace it!

You're fer sure gunna need a new prop. Are you sure it's a glass boat? Are there any REEVITS!!! in it. Take some more pics of the hull around the edges of the transom and along the sides. It's kinda hard to tell.

The stringers are def aluminum, i took some pics where the battery and gas tanks sit and even the inside of the transom fills aluminum but still parts of the boat feel like fiberglass and some feel aluminum, im only 21 but my dad thinks the whole boat is fiberglass.

And the front half of the floor feels strong its only the back half that really needs replace from what i can tell so far. I know i will probably come into more issues once i start tearing into the boat. But what i like aobut it is the inside is so simple it would be super easy to build seats for it.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

a crest liner can be a metal boat or a glass boat....im betting that is a metal one.......and a welded metal one at that....no reevits.

just walk up to the boat and look !...is it metal or glass?.....if its metal..it will be a cake walk to restore, compared to the more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fibreglass boats

(to the op, ignore the above statement, it is just for iboats restoration section junkies ;))

the boat you have got there, (if you can accept the ,less beautiful, less seaworthy, less elegant, less easy to get chicks in, less common, less socially accepted, less politically correct), is a fantastic boat....and as for a free boat...i would say score.

read this .....from our engine maintenance faq's.....http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086
out boards are really easy to deal with,,,,and can be stored for long peirods of time over many cold winters without doing much to them,

as far as the steering....the kids didnt hurt it.....time did......they are easy to replace, but first, try some spray in lubricant to the ends of the steering cable. if that does not work...take the cable off the motor end and see if the motor turns manually, or if the steering wheel turns manually.... that will give you a place to start.

the deck is easy....(compared to the more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fibreglass boats)

as for the upholstery.....the key factor, is if it is stiff to the point that it will crack if you sit on it...... if is cracking when you sit on it......it needs to be replaced....in that boat, it wont cost much, and less if you diy.

all in all....i could have that boat up and "ready" in less than 3 weeks. actually just a few days for the most part.

smile bud.....that boat could be a little gem.

cheers

depending how much i have to spend to get the motor running i really want to build some custom seats and maybe put like a flat cusion on the back for like a tanning platform, i plan on having girls on it haha and i also want to build a cooler into the floor or under a seat but idk how i would make it drain once the ice melts

oops! Don't you have something that needs grinding somewhere?

jpormen - I can't believe you picked that up for free!! Sweeeeeettttt:D

Hit the "Starcraft Rebuilds and Restorations" link in my signature, grab your favorite beverage and start reading. Tons of info on how to rebuild these ol metal boats. Yah I know, you have a Crestliner but the concepts to rebuild that rig are essentially the same.

Welcome to the iboats drydock:)

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

i also want to build a cooler into the floor or under a seat but idk how i would make it drain once the ice melts

simplest thing in the world.......build a cooler using tin (make sure you don't cut your arms off.....everything in a tin boat is very sharp...that boat could be the death of you )!

use spray on foam for the out side of the cooler.....then run pvc tubes form the cooler to the bilge. a standard plug drain in the cooler will suffice.
when you make your deck......make a section of the deck the lid for the cooler.....really simple.

as for the sun pad......that is a feature most commonly found on the more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fibreglass boats.

as far as the sun pad......
a company called bay-liner had a great idea......they had slots built into the boat, so that you could take seat cushions and easily convert them to a sun pad.
in your case.....a back rest that goes all the way across the boat should suffice.

with the pedestal seats......you need to re enforce the deck, UNDER the deck......so when you install the new deck.......just add another section of plywood under the area where the pedestal bolts to

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

heres a drawing i did on paint of how i want my interior to be if i have room, i havent done any measuring yet this is just a rough sketch of how i want it.

10wim8m.jpg

The light blue would be the bottom of the seats, The green is the back of the seats, the red is the tanning platform which rest on the back part of the back seats The orange is the cooler compartment with cup holders. the back of the back seats wont connect to each other there will be a cut out so i have access to the gas tank and battery.

This is the way i want it set up if there is enough room

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Is this a piece of wood added to the outside? I cant really tell if you have any on the inside, but usually when I see a piece of wood outside like this it is because the transom was weak and this was a band-aid fix. I am not familiar with the tinnies, because I have a more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fibreglass boat. But the ones I have seen have the transom wood on the inside still...

P.S......Oops, can we find a shorter method of saying our boats rock?

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

there wont be.

the set up you want is s typical i/ dog house type situation....

try using the rear seats as a bench.....and the back rest of the bench, as your sunpad (red area)

the cooler can be built in the floor, as discussed.....and the drink holders can be purchased to either fold up or slide in the gunwhales.....this means they can go any where !

my boat may not be a more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fibreglass boat....but it was a free boat and my first boat =] if i get her running smoothly i will love her!!!

Should i go head and tear at the floor and then tarp her, or should i wait till spring and do it then?

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Just a thought....

Build the boat as a fishing boat. Even if you don't fish. Make modifications to the boat, keeping in mind it's a fishing boat.

Then down the road you can always sell it.

E/Z's boat in the back would be a good one to copy IMO.
Any front, or rear fishing deck can have removable cushions installed. I want to eventually have a set made for my boat for the wife.

I'm sure others offer them, but I'm positive Alumacraft offers removable bow cushions from the factory.

BTW that is a killer boat, and even better deal. Very jealous.

Band-aids are usually only required on glassers.:D That piece of wood is only a transom pad for the motor most likely put there by the manufacturer.....judging by the bracing inside id say there may not be any wood there.....its amazing what can be achieved with a bit of tin.:D

that depends on your time and money plus a space to work on her with bud?

if you have the space......the time and money will come to you......it is easier to spend a little money at a time, and a little work at a time, than spending the 1k needed right off the bat.

your first concern is the motor......if its toast.....the project takes a whole different direction....(but im sure the motor is fine)

after that winteizing an out board is as simple as shooting fog into the running carbs, and pulling the fuel line while running. then replacing the leg oil. and leaving the motor in the down position.

the deck can be ripped up at any time.......but the uph will take time.....if you do it pro....it will take money.....so a section at a time. is less costly off the bat. say...a bow cushion. then 3 weeks later a bow seat.....that is only 75 bux a whack........
if you diy.....its only 100 at once for materials. but can be done over the winter.

but lets get that motor running first. before you even tarp it.....drain the old gas....put in fresh do what is in that link i gave you.....and fire it up !

Yah, getting that engine running would be a great first move.

You can gut that rig through the winter. Check out my two projects, tearing stuff apart is an excellent cold weather sport:)

i was out cleaning some of the debree and trash out of the boat. i originally thought the front part of the boat was solid but the floor is feeling a little weak so i might have to do the whole entire floor.

Heres some pics of the Yamaha
