Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

I know this is way to early to start thinking about paint, but oh well. I originally was just going to repaint the stripe on the boat. When i got the boat i only planed on replacing the floor from the steering wheel back, but now ive decdied to just gut it all and redo everything to where it will last while and look nice. So once i get the inside stripped out i think im going to go ahead and build a motor stand and pull off the O/B and flip the boat and smooth it out and make it look good.

Question is how much do you guys think it would cost to paint it. I know prices may very im just looking for a rough estimate for materials. im going to attack a picture for how i want to paint it. i would just like to roughly know how much material cost id have in paint before i decide to do a full paint on it.

Hey jpormen,
Been quietly lurking, following your thread...Really nice score on the whole rig...Boat's got nice lines, engine looks dang near pristine, and the trailer seems fine.

Just wanted to chime in and say that its never too early to start thinking about paint, reason number one is it gives inspiration to finish our projects...:D

So far I like what your rendition looks like.

On your engine, Post #20, Picture #3...the only issue I see, and I could be completely wrong, is the spark plug wires look like they have some cracking of the insulation.
IF, that is the case, you MIGHT have a performance issue with crossfiring, meaning that if the engine seems to misfire or stumble at any time, whether idling or under power, you may want to consider replacing the wires. Just a thought...

I'll be following along till you get it splashed, Best of luck and have fun.

Question is how much do you guys think it would cost to paint it.

You could paint it with Rustoleum products for $20 or two-part marine products for $200. Up to you.

Like EZ says, Cheap or expensive is your call. If you want to go cheap, Page #10 of my "Flamingo" thread, listed below, has all the details on how to use the Valspar Tractor Paint and the Hardener to give you a very durable and inexpensive paint job. Great thing about it is you can roll it or spray it. Several guys on here have used it with great results. You might want to check it out when the time comes.

Thanks for the quick responses, i would prefer to roll it on if its easier, i would rather go cheaper, but i just want it to survive a few years loading and unloading on the trailor with out becoming all strached up.

Im going to hopefully get the floor out tomorrow if its not raining or snowing, normally we have snow by now. I would love to get everthing gutted out that way when spring gets here i can paint it and start rebuilding and be on the water hopefully by summer

The Valspar with Hardener is very durable and will withstand the loading and unloading on the trailer.

I will most likely go with that. My parents said they would buy me a couple sheets of marinie plywood or paint for christmas. so that will save me a little bit of money.

Question about audio. Im thinking about puting in speakers and a CD player, but i dont want to drain the battery, does the battery charge whenthe motor runs like a car?

Welcome to the madness!
That motor should charge the battery no problem.
Also, no need for marine plywood, in fact it can interact with the tinand wreck havoc (pitting, acidic reaction)

And my boat was painted with rustoleum rolled on, btw

Save your parents some $$$ and just get exterior grade ply. Marine ply only means water proof glue and a few less voids in the inner plies. You have to apply the same protection to exterior or marine to delay the wood from rot. Look at some of the rebuilds in the Starcraft section to see what they used and how they did it. Maybe they can get you 4 sheets for all your decking and transom for the cost of 2 sheets of marine.

Yep ^^^ Arauco plywood is plenty good and @ 45 bucks a sheet you can do the whole boat for the price of two sheets of Marine Grade. You can get it at Lowe's

I found it at my local Home Depot when I was looking around. 23/32 sanded both sides, exterior glue and made in Chile for less than $30 a sheet.

Interesting, I have never seen it at HD. Glad they're carrying it as the regular exterior grade I got from them for my deck was total garbage.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Well guys spent about an hour or so today on the boat and tore the floor out, minus the front floor, from the consoles back there's no floor. The floor was actually 4 peices which made it somewhat easy to get out. I just started picking at wet spots and holes and started pulling up pieces haha wasnt the best method but it worked!

Looks like you have the dreaded poured foam, jp. The stringer system looks substantial.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Save the pieces of deck wood to use as templates for your new plywood. For new plywood, I would go with exterior doug fir ply and seal it with epoxy or poly and glass. Arauco ply, or what it's made of radatarian (sp) pine, is not as rot resistant as doug fir. Even if you seal it up it's going to be more susceptible to rot, any staple or screw hole not sealed up will allow moisture in, then the rot begins. I do agree that Arauco is some nice looking ply, but I'm not sure of the rot factor, long term. If Plydek XL is available in your area that might be a good choice for plywood as it's a treated marine plywood, used for pontoons and boats. It's kind of spendy, but you don't "have to" seal it up with epoxy or poly and glass. Oh yeah, don't use normal green treated plywood, it'll eat your boat.

That foam looks water logged, and with the condition of the wood, that would make sense. Do some core samples (piece of plastic pipe with teeth cut on the end, twist down into foam) and see if it's water logged. If it is, rip it out and replace it with sheet foam or EZ's favorite, pool noodles.

To remove the residual carpet and glue off the aluminum, soak some paper towels in lacquer thinner, lay them on the fuzz/glue, then cover it with a garbage bag so the lacquer thinner doesn't evaporate quickly. Let this marinade for 15 minutes and the stuff should easily wipe off. The fuzz areas might require a second treatment as the thinner isn't laying right on the glue. I bought a 5 gallon can of lacquer thinner for my project and used most of it. I would do a test spot to make sure this works with your glue, before buying a 5 gallon can. ***CAUTION!*** use a respirator and plenty of nitrile gloves when doing this. I doubled up the thin nitrile gloves and when the top one shredded, I'd put on another. Harbor freight has nitrile gloves pretty cheap, I'd get 2 boxes. (I tried a set of heavy "dipped" nitrile gloves, but they only lasted an hour or so. The tin ones worked better, even though the lacquer thinner eats them pretty quick.)

What you are doing looks pretty close to what I did on my 1800 Superhawk, good luck and have fun with the project.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

The floor is in to many pieces to use as a template, there was so much rot i couldnt get it out in big enoguh peices to save for a template. I work at walmart so cardboard is easy to get for free so im just going to lay down cardboard and then trace the template on to ply wood.

Most of the foam is no good, its real soft and water comes out when you touch it lol

I might have to do the floor in pieces because the consoles, are welded to the boat and i would rather not break the welds

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

You might want to remove the bung in the transom and get the bow pointing a little more skywards to drain off the water laying around in there, bet that smells devine :D .....if you cant get it undercover its good practice to keep it stored that way too, tarped or not.
