Motor looks pretty clean... I'd store it vertically so that it drains any water...
One soft spot is usually indicative of a lot of rot...

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

you got that for free?

fire it !

wait.....first off......do you know anything about boat motors?.....you need water gong to the lower unit thru a set of muffs...http://www.ebay.ca/itm/LARGE-OUTBOA...AU_Boat_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c603304ba

these are hooked to a garden hose so water flows to your motor and does not burn out the water pump called an impeller.

sorry to be so basic.....but i dont know your level of understanding of marine motors and i am trying to protect you from costly mistakes.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

i dont know really anything about boat motors or really motors in general, but its funny when i picked the boat up my uncle looked for awhile for themuffs, i found that earlier sitting in the batter box cause the battery isnt in the box.

I want to fire it up, but with school and work idk if i will have time before its to cold. plus the battery is shot unless it has jumper cables to it.

also i need to get a key or havemy dads shop make me a key for it

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

ignition switches for boats are really cheap.....about 10 bux.....but as a student...even that can be a stretch.

ok....one thing to allways remember......the motor on a boat is NEVER started without water going to it.....

in side the lower unit (by the propeller) is a small rubber impeller,,,(water pump) it will burn out within 3 seconds when run with out water. that means, when you are on the lake....no water will flow to cool the motor. and you wont know about it......no way to tell. it will cook your very exepncive motor in just minits....and that will set you back at least 5 grand.

on the back of your motor.....(i think the yammys have it) is a pee hole.....yep. pee hole.
on the lake.....it shoots a stream of water back into the lake......this is a "tell tale" that your impeller is working properly. this is something that you should always check every time you start you motor at the lake.....every time !

when you are hooked up to the muffs at home....the water pressure from the garden hose flows thru the motor.....so you will never be able to tell if the impeller is working properly on the motor......but on the lake you can.

you are in the right place bud.....read lots here, and we will guide you...... i am a fibreglass boat i/o board guy...(the kind of boat with the motor inside the boat and the leg or "drive" sticking out the back) so i am of limited help compared to some of the tinny guys (aluminium boat) or the ob (outboard, thats what you have) motor guys.

but a boat is a boat......and i have done a few tinnys too.....so, between us all.......you will be killin fish and pickin up chicks next season.

may i suggest, that you take a safe boating course over the winter.....this is really important.

boating is really fun.....we all love it here at iboats......but we all also know that in ONE SECOND someone could die !.
you , as captain of the boat, are responsible for all the lives of each person on the boat. you...!!!! yep you !
coming back to the dock with a dead person on the boat is not something that you want to have to deal with.

it may sound far fetched......but its not......every one on your boat having fun..sunny day..a few sody pops......some chick up front......doing the titanic thing you are cruising slow at 20 mph.....just on plane......hit a wave.....she goes over the bow and you kill her with the prop......that fast.....no reaction time....none.
we lost an nhl player on our lake last year, just like that. sliced his neck open....they pulled him form the water in seconds, he was dead long before they got to the dock.

you have quite a boat there....lots of fun.....you will have chicks all over you in the summer.....just keep a level head bud.....make rules, and if people dont follow them.....back to shore, imeadately. no if's and's or but's.

every time i get new people on my boat......i drive away form the dock and get out of the launch ramp area. then i stop and have a quick orienteering meeting with all people.
i tell them where the life jackets are, where the fire extingusher is....what to do in case a "man overboard" situation happens....tell them not to move around the boat when the boat is at speed....then we go out and have a fantastic time.....
012-Copy-Copy.jpg

but every body know the rules.....and they respect it.....they all want to come out with me on my boat, because they feel safe.
i dont have a 2011 master craft with a wake tower and sound cans all over the boat.......but i always got lots of girls on my boat because they know that they are safer with me. ill raft with those guys, but when i feel like its getting out of the safe range....we leave and go somewhere else....and usually ill have a few more girls on my boat after !

any how.....enjoy your boat bud.....you got a real score there.
we will help you fix it up properly.

cheers

!...is it metal or glass?.....if its metal..it will be a cake walk to restore, compared to the more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fibreglass boats

That might be the quote of the day....

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

nice score on your boat and the OB is very clean........ gives new meaning to "drive it like you stole it".......

i was in the same BOAT as you and getting the motor running was the first thing i had to get done. folks in the OB section was a lot of help and the guys here on this one are very knowledgeable when it come to fixing either
the more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fiberglass boats............

or the
the less beautiful, less seaworthy, less elegant, less easy to get chicks in, less common, less socially accepted, less politically correct tin boat............

myself i have one of each so i get to stir the pot and sit back to watch the fireworks.....:D

again, sweet score, and it will be a lot easier to do the resto on. where are you located anyway?

we will all be here to help you, keep you on task, give you a hard time and cheer you on......

Welcome to the Iboats family......;)

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Super deal on a super hull, look at the layout on the ebay boat in pmccraney's thread I bet you would be happy with something like that with the cooler under a seat. Also look at some of the new layouts on the Crestliner website, like the 1850 here.

http://www.crestliner.com/sport-fish-wakeboarding-boats-1850/

That is a primo hull, I had a 1995 1750 Sportfish with a 3.0 Volvo-Penta I/O that was a sweet ride. I traded it when I got the pontoon bug, again.

The 90 should come to life fairly easily. Use the "waking an outboard" thread and it should come right back for you. Check with your Uncle to see why he parked the boat, just hope it was for the soft floors. BTW you owe that Uncle, big time.

If you look at the Crestliner site check the STARTING price on the 1850, something a little over $35K if I remember right.

Good luck with you restoration and welcome to iboats.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

You guys have givin me some pretty awesome ideas. I like how the way the boats layout now is so simple. It has the very front seats then it has to seats two of the two seats together. once i pull the back seats which i can have out in 5 mins, it gives me alot of room and a clean slate to basically build it to how i want. I actually have the whole weekend off this weekend so i might see if i can get her running depening on the weather.

He parked it because he had it at his dock uncovered and it was sinking so the motor might have been under water, he pulled it out and i think he just didnt feel like messing with it cause he has been saying hes geting a pontoon for awhile, why fix a broken boat when your triyng to buy a pontoon? im guessing that was his moto

Well his loss is your gain. I doubt the boat sank deep enough for the outboard to ingest water...usually at that point they are at the bottom of the lake, for good.

It's fine if you dont run it until spring, BUT it would however, be a great idea to get yourself some fogging oil, pull the plugs, and spin that motor over by hand while oiling the cylinders!!!

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Thanks for the info so far guys, i def want to try to get into a boating class of some sort before i start the boating season.

I know the boat driver cant drink and drive a boat and i know that there is boating under the influance laws. But what is the laws with having beer on boats for passengers?

Also everyone says my boat is aluminum, the stringers are aluminum, the top half of the boat feels like aluminum and sounds like it when i knock on it. but the bottom half of the boat doesnt feel like aluminum it feels and sounds like fiberglass in my opinion, do they make boats that are half and half? all the tin boats i seen have rivets on the boat buut i dont see any on this one. ill attach a pic of the hull.

Also my unlce restore a seadoo boat for my cousin a few years back and he showed us a way that we can fire the motor for a 1 sec and see if it fires, were not going to run the motor were jsut going to fire it. If it fires then we know that we can get it running. If we do get it to fire. im going to invest in a cheap carport with tarpped sides and start working on the floor and such over the winter. The carport should hold up as long as i keep the snow knocked off of it. i dont know the name for what im bout to explain, but i un mounted the speed handle unit? i was trying to see how hard it is to get the ignition out and when i took part of it apart everything in there looked to be in great shape to me, but im jsut a rookie so hopefully im right, and i know those cost over $200 new.

a crest liner can be a metal boat or a glass boat....im betting that is a metal one.......and a welded metal one at that....no reevits.

.it will be a cake walk to restore, compared to the more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fibreglass boats

the boat you have got there, (if you can accept the ,less beautiful, less seaworthy, less elegant, less easy to get chicks in, less common, less socially accepted, less politically correct), is a fantastic boat....and as for a free boat...i would say score.

that IS a welded aluminium hull......its worth money.....
the reason it sounds different when you knock on its hull.....is because there is still foam in the hull.....and the sound will change instead of the hollow sound you hear when knocking on a different area.

were you able to get the motor running yet?

An ENTIRE steering system from soup to nuts is $120. http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/Uflex-ROTECH-Kits_c_226.html So it isn't a catastrophe if your steering is frozen. The cables are a wear item and will seize up over time especially if not used.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Hey guys its been a little while since i last posted, i thought we would be getting alot more snow then what we have goten so far, none! I work at walmart and im a student so ive been busy with finals and working the holiday season. Today i didnt have anything to do so i went outside and started tearing the boat apart, got out all of the seats, most of them interior trim and panels, even took off the windows and unscrewed all the screws i could find holding the floor down. All i got to do now is tear out the deck. I havent attempted to get it running yet though. Once i start actaully rebuilding everything ive decided to get wtih the KISS moto, Keep It Simple Stupid haha heres some pics i took today.
