Guess I really will have to go and find a job just for the gas. Picking up aluminum cans is starting to sound like a viable idea. But if I work it means less time for fishing! It's just one big vicious circle!!!! Ron

I like what you did with the switch panel..........looks great!

What type of paint are you using for the hull?

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

For right now I'm going to just use a good primer and spray can enamel and buff it out. I'm just going to paint the front top, side walls and floor. The cuddy is just fine. (When I say "I'M" I really mean "my son." LoL) This boat has had a major accident at some time or another on the right front bow. Maybe she was damaged in a hurricane. Who knows! Just got to "keep on keeping on!" Still plan on painting whole boat in late spring. Ron

Maybe I'll change my mind on the spray can paint and go with something like Rust-0leum Marine Topside paint and use roller to apply. What ya think?

I would go with the roller and marine paint. Spray paint is very thin an less likley to hold up.

That's what I decided to do. I found the Marine paint at Lowe's but they can't match colors. I used two quarts of the Oyster White and one can of Gloss White and think it looks pretty good on the paint stick. I'm sure it's not going to match the hull but nothing will and and is nice color for the top side.

Has anyone used Rust-Oleum Topside before and know if I should use a primer? The can does'nt really call for it unless there are some really bad areas! I'm going to wet sand with 320 and take care of any little pitted areas. Top side bow area is mostly previously painted over repairs.

Not much happened this week with the restoration. My grandaughter was sick two days this week and guess who had to care for her, "The retired guy!" Well I'm not kickin about it cause she's worth it. With my elderly father-in-law's doctor appointment and my annual eye doctor appointment things just did'nt happen. Gotta keep the wife on the job to support my hobbies! At a snails pace, I looked behind me and saw a silvery trail right up to my feet. LoL Ron

I don't know, Ron...seems like your dallying a little bit.LOL...

Still have those hot spots saved for your maiden voyage...just gotta head north a litlle bit!

Yeah, I know all about the retired guy thing..I started last February. Was kinda prepared, but I too still have the wife working..still find it hard to get to all that I thought I could do this past 8 months!

Just take it a day at a time..so far your project has looked great, and your son is doing a wonderful job as well. As far as the fishing..they're not going anywhere..:D

Thanks triumphrick for the support! Had 2 or 3 laid back days and am going to hit it again tomorrow. Started wireing up the switch panel tonight and am going put the new seal in the upper outdrive tomorrow and see about putting the lower back on. My son's coming over in the morning and hope to have some painting done tomorrow. (Hope it does'nt rain.) I think I'm going to have to go wire by wire on the switch panel cause it looks like over the years things have been switched and buggared with. Lot of cut wres here and there and will trace all of them out. We will definetly have to do that fishing trip one day soon. Ron

Made a little progess today with wet sanding and first coat painting the upper bow. Looks "really" good so decided to just go ahead and wet sand the cuddy cabin and paint it too. Went with straight Oyster White paint. Awe heck, I'm just going to paint the whole upper portion. Here's a before and after pic. Ron

Yesterday was a good day for the project. My son painted the gunwhales and I painted the engine cowlings. He removed the cleats and rod holders, for painting gunwhales, and I started buffing and polishing them. Today does'nt look good for doing anything cause it's raining. Ron

Hey John. The can instructions did'nt call for a primer unless you had some really bad spots. I did buy some of their Marine Primer but have'nt used it. Before painting I wet sanded with 220 grit, washed area, used Acetone just before painting to clean once again and painted. They recommend wet sanding between coats with 220 grit and that will make the paint lay down really flat for final coat. I figure to use two coats. I'm still on my first quart! After the paint is really hard I'm going to buff it out with 3M's Restorer Wax. Everyone should try that 3M stuff, "It's the bomb!" Ron

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Thanks for asking Cimy3! I had to go out of town last Friday and just got back this afternoon (Monday). The work is still there just waiting for my loving attention! LoL I was told that it rained all weekend anyway. Before I left I bought some 2" high density foam, heavy duty naugahide and stainless steel staples to make two new stern seats. Hope they come out looking and functioning good. Been thinking about the safety of my fuel tanks and may pull both of then out and check um over real good. I understand they can be sand blasted and the inside coated if they look questionable. Replacement cost would really put me behind the "8 Ball." Ron
